BY J. L. JUSTICE (Logansport, Ind;; R. F. D. 2) N HEARING the compli- cated method and variety of feeds a young sheep raiser was using, a man old in the business him- self gave his method in one terse sentence: “I give my breed- ing ewes clover hay in the morning and some of the same at night, with plenty of water and salt.” This may seem like a pretty simple ration to some, but I have found that it can be used a great deal more success- fully than can a ration made up large- 1y of grains and concentrates with a small proportion of hay. This /applies to ewes in lamb. They will get off feed much quicker on a grain than a hay ration. Clover hay is greatly relished by sheep and they also consume a great deal of al-' sike hay, which has a little finer stem than the other clovers. Sheep do not care so much for feeds that are too dry, and partly for this reason they consume clover hay better if it was made a little too green than too dry. Shredded fodder makes a good sub- stitute for the clover, but when feed- ing it to ewes in lamb wa always added, a little oats to the ration. A little shredded fodder goes a long way in the sheep lot, though we never forced them to clean up any large portion of it.. The refuse makes good bedding in the runway and pens when the lambs are coming and it is %uperior to straw for sheep. I always like to feed the clover, since sheep have a good appetite for jt. They will not eat it after it is once trampled on so it should be fed in racks to prevent waste. Ewes in lamb should have it at least once a day. As the ewes near lambing time, it is well to feed a little oats. Some- times we have mixed oats and ground corn for a grain feed, occasionally giving a little linseed meal. The lin- seed meal is good to use as a laxative when feeding the fodder, though it is not necessary when feeding clover hay. Oats and bran are excellent to feed along toward lambing time. Both of these feeds are highly nutritious, and I always noticed that ewes fed a lit- tle of them, both before and after lambing, give a plentiful supply of milk for their lambs. The amount and kinds of feed nec- essary for ewes depend to a great ex- tent on the condition of the ewes when put on winter feed. Ewes in good flesh we have carried up to lambing on little except good clover hay and fodder. Corn is a little too fattening to feed except in very small quantities, and it is better fed with two or three parts of oats. No corn at all should be fed when feeding silage, as the ewe gets sufficient in the corn silage, and additional corn would only tend to fatten the ewe to her detri- ment. : We have had lambs from ewes over- fat and they never proved as thrifty or sturdy as others from ‘ewes in proper condition. A ewe will grow fat before you hardly realize it. By feel- ing along the back, gathering the flesh in the hand over the backbone, one can easily determine the condi- -tion of a ewe. A little green forage can often be picked up by the ewes out in the fields in winter, though they will not search under the snow like -cattle. Tufts of blue grass, clover and rape are available sometimes in an open winter but don’t expect the sheep to rove over a muddy field, for they.do not seek such places. They like best a soft underfooting like that in the pas- i ture fields and they enjoy a weodlot. * PAGE TWELVE ADVERTISEMENTS Egos $15 a Dozen Yes, $1.25 for one egg! .
