DITOR Nonpartisan Leader: I noticed a long article in the Minneapolis Tribune last Sunday in regard to prices paid in South Dakota and by the North Dakota state-owned mill. They quoted the prices paid by the mill at Drake November 17 and then quoted the prices that the Stokes Milling company, Watertown, S. D., paid De- cember 2. If you will look up the prices at the terminal markets you will find that the premium had ad- vanced something like 15 or 16 cents between those dates. The writer of the article, Don Liv- ingston, director of markets of South Dakota, thought what was needed at Drake was a man who understood the hedging in wheat. Of course every farmer in South Dakota, as well as the school children, know that there is no hedging in wheat nor has there been any since the government took over the wheat and fixed the market price. Another writer quoted in the same article said that paying for dockage in North Dakota was all bunk; that the elevator buyer simply paid that much less for wheat. Of course that gen- tleman didn’t know that all buyers are licensed, that the state grain inspec- tion department had authority to fix the margin and that the department canceled the. license of any buyer caught in anything of the kind. .
