GallowayCo. 507 Galloway Station, Waterloo, lowa Has Whirlwind Distributor Cold Day Hints For Owners of Automobiles and Tractors OLD affects an internal ®| combustion engine in three ways. It makes lubricating oil congeal and thus increases fric- tion. It weakens the spark when a dry battery is used. It causes gasoline to vaporize more slow- ly, if at all, and thus makes it diffi- cult to secure a strong mixture. ‘0il congealing is not serious, though it requires more effort to crank. A lighter oil helps. If the engine is equipped with a timer that is oiled the congealing - may interfere with the contact. A little kerosene or gasoline to thin the oil will overcome this. A dry battery should be kept in a reasonably warm place during the winter. If this has not been done it should at any event be kept in'a warm place for several minutes before at- tempting to start the motor in cold weather. But never warm a battery by applying intense heat directly to the cells. In extremely cold weather, when priming the engine will not work, try filling the cooling system with hot water to warm the cylinders, letting it stand for several minutes. It is not necessary to fill the entire cooling sys- tem with hot water; after the engine has been started cold water can be added until the radiator is full. If only a little hot water is available, pour it slowly over the intake manifold and the carburetor as well (making sure that the carburetor is covered so no water can enter it). Or wrap a cloth around the intake manifold and pour hot water over the cloth. If no hot water is available remove the spark plugs and heat them, prim- ing the engine before they are re- placed. They will not be injured on a stove, in the flame of a blow torch (at a safe distance from the engine and gasoline supply) or even in a fire, if not allowed to get red hot. Just be- fore replacing, a drop or two of gaso- line may be poured on the end of the plug which goes inside the cylinder.
