That answers the first question. Second question: Is it good as an investment? That is a more diffi- cult question to answer and the Leader will admit that it has not made suf- ficient inquiry as to the success or failure of co-operative packing plants to be certain. It would be better to rely on the advice of those who have. If the plant is well built and well located the chances of selling it to the ] state at a price so that no money will be lost on that account should be ex- cellent. When the state gets ready to enter the packing business undoubt- l edly it will want to get its plant into operation as soon as possible, and if a well-located and well-built plant is to be had all ready at a reasonable price ] it seems very probable that the state will want to buy it. In the meantime it it is well managed it ought to be operated at a profit. Much depends ] upon the management and on this point a more detailed inquiry should be yourself. I can not understand why every farmer in the ‘state i{s not a member of this League. One surely can see the necessity of organization on every hand. All' business is organized, all classes of workers are organized, but the farmer seems to think that he can battle with the combined “Big Biz" single handed. The fact that the chamber of com- merce and the packing industry have their hirelings to discourage “farmer’ organization” is sufficient evidence that the farmer needs it. J The program of the Nonpartisan League will without a doubt remove the hardships under which the farmer is living today, and every proposed law in that same program dictates justice ‘which I am striving under at the pres- ent time. My farm- consists of 160 acres and ship 127 and my taxes on this same farm for the year 1916 were $94.80. The land adjoining my farm is owned by a speculator., This speculator has 160 acres which is all fenced in and re- ceives about $35.00 per year for pas- ture purposes. I discovered that the taxes on his place were only $22.00. Is this justice? & Because I worked hard and improv- ed my farm and also helped build up the community I am fined $94.80, while the man who is holding back the strides of advancement by leaving his ;and idle is allowed to “get by” with 22.00. These and other conditions of like nature are what is making our farmers thinlk., ! !
