Domrese of Larson for publication. Mr. E. R. Domrese of Larson, N. D., passed away at the hospital at Williston Tuesday, December 12. In the death of: Mr. Demrese the Nonpartjsan League loses one of its most enthusiastic mem- bers. He was a delegate chosen from Keller township at the precinct meeting February 22. Mr. Demrese was one of the early settlers in Burke county. Being a most systematic and successful farmer he was ever ready to take a part in boost- ing for the farmer. He hoped some day to seé the farmers of the Northwest win a sqare deal. LEE LOUGHREY. STATE MILL—QUICK! Harvey, N. D., Dec. 20, 1916 Editor Nonpartisan Leader: I have noted with pleasure the splendid stand you have taken in the trials and tribulations of this year’s marketing of our crops; also, how well you have proved to us beyond a doubt how we have been robbed of what rightly belongs to us. I want to say right here that it is assur- edly time that we go to work and build our own state-owned mills and elevators in North Dakota. We want our own grading laws and inspections and justice for- all producers and consumers alike. I doubt then if so many new-baked millionaires would turn up. We all know that any so-called Chamber of Commerce man of Minne- apolis is in a very short time rated as a millionaire. The flour mill owners of that city easily got to be multi-million- aires and -have, with a nonchalant air donated from one to two millions to such institutions as the “Minneapolis Fine Arts.” Now I don’t condemn such gifts except when the money for them has been tal~~ ° jly from the producer and consumer. The farmers who have produced all this fine wealth have not been going around in fancy broadcloth, nor have their wives and daughters been burdened with very much embroidery. 3 So by all means let us get the state- owned mill; let the legislature levy a tax high enough so we can get it at once, or sell state bonds to build it. With our unlimited coal deposits we, should silk and —not-Worry ior power;, eVen ii we au not have St. Anthony’s falls tc depend upon. Will say in conclusion that Dr. Ladd is a brick and my desire is that he will live long and that the world-at large may prosper by his work and knowledge. GUSTAF N. NELSON. MONTANA NEEDS LEAGUE (Editorial in Northwest, Terry, Mont.) Perhaps the biggest question of the day that, interests the farmers of Mon- tana or rather to their interest is the Nonpartisan League movement as exem- plified by the North Dakota Nenpartisan League. Our attention has been forcibly called to this great movement and we see the hand writing on the wall. There is not a question of any doubt in our mind but that with the start the League already has in North Dakota that the farmers of Montana will join this movement. The Northwest Magazine in its dealings on the foremost questions of the day and its editorial comment goes on record as a booster for this movement. We have already reserved the right of championing any movement that is to the interest of the many and surely there isn’t a movement in the west today that is of more vital interest than this move- ment to the farmers of Montana. I believe that it is to the best interest of the farmers of Montana that there should be a movement afforded for their protection. 1 believe in state terminal elevators, flour mills, stock ‘yards, pack- ing houses and cold storage plants. I believe that the farmers of the state of Montana should elect their representa- tives to”the state legislature to-protect their interests, men who can put through legislation for the protection of the farm- ers primarily, men who are farmers themselves and know the conditions and the interest of the farmers of Montana. At the recent election in North Dakota - the League elected a total of eighty-one representatives of which number sixty- eight were Republicans, thirteen Demo- crats and as thereis a total membership. - of one hundred and thirteen it gives the . Nonpartisan League a majority of twenty-four. It means that-the presiding officer of the house, the speaker, will be elected by the house and will be a League man.
