" New Rockford, N. D. FARM WOMEN’S PAGE Edited by MRS. AUDREY-A. HARRIS Mothering and Teaching BY EMERITA YEGEN I wonder if the farm mothers of North Dakota ever realize that they have advantages for child training that are denied the city mothers. The laws and facts of sex are learned almost unconsciously by their little ones from the birds, flowers, and all the other living things about the farm yard. The street teaching that comes to so many city children does not pre- sent this subject in any degree of purity or beauty. g Welfare workers struggle and clamor for a solution of this great problem but without nature to present it. in her own wise way little can be done. Nature study 1is gaining ground in city schools but nature study minus nature leaves much un- accomplished. The out of doors is a great teacher and the love for trees and streams, hills and skies, birds and bees and flowers, grows from early association with them. Help Each Other The small ‘school and the oppor- tunity for a close relationship with the teacher are of the highest impor- tance to the mother who seeks the best for her children. There ought always to be a spirit of cooperation between the mother and teacher. The . results they can achieve by working hand in hand would be well worth the time and thought spent while to- gether. Every farm mother in the state ought to be the fast friend and helper of the teacher of her child. They must work together to make the best men and wonien possible out of their children. Both mother and teacher may well remember that every year of child- hood and youth are fraught with wonderful possibilities. A child’s mind is like a-sponge. It will absorb whatever is.put in his environment. From the child’s first year at school mother and teacher..ean work to- gether. The teacher can assist the TRY OUR CEMENT PAINT FOR WATER PROOFING $1.50 and $2 per gallon, In barrels less. F. BARTON . Box 1106 ol Fargo, N. D. PERTH HOSPITAL DR. D. mother in the selection of books in simple language suitable for the mind that is securing an introduction to the world of literature. Having a num- ber of primers and easily read books for the child supplies the needs of his developing mind. Confining him to a one and only text book is no longer deemed wise. Let Nature Teaéh Nature stories, simple biographies of great men and women, prints of the masterpieces, statuettes that are copies of fine sculpture, jaunts over the - prairie- or through woodland, studying nature at first hand—all these are absolutely essential in child training and all are within the reach of the teacher or mother living in North Dakota farm homes. Music, vocal, instrumental, or from records, is another of the most necessary factors in child training. Every country school should be sup- plied with something that will pro- duce ‘music, even if it be only the teacher’s voice. No child should grow to maturity with his mind and heart unnourished by one of the divinest of all the arts. Mother and teacher should teach him to detect the music in rain and winds and to appreciate the song- birds. He should observe the coloring of earth and sky and respond to beauty wherever he finds it. When- ever possible he should be taken where he may view the paintings and sculpture of the great artists and hear the music of the master musicians. (Miss Yegen will continue her talk on “Mothering and Teaching” in a later number.) Entertainment Contest The Leader’s prize contest for wo- men readers on the subject of enter- tainment in rural communities ' is closed. The abundance of splendid and practical suggestions and of well- told stories of successful entertain- ments has been a surprise and a. de- light to the editor of the woman’s page. ‘It becomes a tremenduously difficult matter to judge among so many good letters. It is not possible to announce the result in this issue, but it is hoped to complete the work and give the names of winners by the next issue. Later a number of the best letters will be printed in-the Leader and will cer- tainly prove of the greatest interest to every reader. Beaufort Hotel Minneapolis, Minn.
