About ball-past nine yesterday morning the engineer of the steam elevator Havre, lying at (he foot of pier 3 Nortn Rover, was startied by the sudden stoppage of the engine and cries of alarm immediately following from the deck bands above The cause of the dorange- ment in the machinery was but too soon sscertained, and proved to have been the unfortunate misstep of an employé named John Andersen, woo, while in the | act of oiling the cogwheels, was caught in their revola” tons and his right leg literally torn to fragments. The | captain of the elevator, who was present at the time and alongside of Andersen, at onen seized the unfortu- ate man and succeeded, with the assistance of some | of the deck hands, in extricatjng bim from his friehiful | position. The only explanation of Anderson was, “My G how did this happen t” after which he was boroe deck of the steamer lying alongside. Officer , of the Steamboatsquad, who was stationed pier 3, procured the services of the pl to the steamer City of Havaaa, lying at the other sido of the river, who at once applied restoratives and anodyne to relieve the wounded man from pain. Oficer Parker then went up to the Chambers Street Hospital, notified the authorities ther: bulance was sent to the pier, Anderse hospital at twenty minu' to eleven, He was then Yneonscious, and was placed in charge.of the hospital Surgeons. His wounded leg was examined, and it was jound that the lower portion was almost ground to pieces, and the upper portion was torn ia such a way that all the muscles wer posed. It presented @ horrible appearance, and the surgeons dexpaired altogether of being able so save bis life, About three o’ciock in the afternoon he was visited by Rev, Father Canary, who administered the last rites of the Church. Jona Andersen is a nativo of Sweden, thirty-six years of ago, is married and has two chil: drep, all ite ving at No, 550 Hicks street, Brookiyn. A PREGNANT SUBJECT. Professor John W. (£ditorial from Chicago Tribune, Nov. 11.] Notwithstanding the election excitement the hor. rivle act of vandalism attempted at Springfield bas eausea a general thrill of horror. If there had been no election pending the deed would have roused the whole North to a dosperate determination that the vandals should be overtaken and punished. The facts have beon already related in detail in the Tribune, but may be restated generally. Some time since Mr, Robert Lincoln was informed by an anonym that an attempt would be made on election night to break into the chamber of the Lincoin monument, containing the remains of his father, and carry them off. He concluded to put the matter into the bands of Eimer Wasbburs, who, with his customary Vigilance and promptness, was om the spot at the time announced, and would have arrested the vandals or otherwise summarily disposed of thea bad not one of his assistants prematurely dis- eharged his pistol, which had the efleet to alarm them while they were at their work, Before the dotectives could reach them they had, disappeared 1: the monument and mifde good their escap ‘hat was the exact motive of this outrageous vi dalism itis very difficuit to ascertam. 1t may have been that these infamous riflers of the tomb gelected sa ap Dight a8 a time when they would be less likely ‘to be observed, and when their opportunity for escape would be surest, to despoil the sarcophagus, carry off the remains to some secluded ana mysterious spot and then negotiate with tho authorities for thetr re- rp, hoping for a large reward. Im these days of ingeniously horrible. crimes such a@ theory ws not = altogeth improbable. If a gan; 4" desperadoes could abduct the boy Ros: a, bide him ig so skilfully and here even ile ne- otiati 18 return, it certaii TT uld be & much fora cult operation to steal t hes of Lincoln and dety detection, and perbaps eventually sccure a large reward without lap danger ot punishment. It is not impossible, also, that the motive was simply a morbid desire on the part of the vandals to connect their names with a deed unparalleled for infamy, and immortalize themselyos like the fool who fired the Ephesian dome and that other fool who threw bime self into the crater of the volcano. Whatever have been the motive famous and dastardly, and betrays a reckless- ness of purpose and a baseness of heart difficult to understand. To rifle the humbiest gravo is unnatural and only the work of a monster. To disturb the siumbers of the great and good President in his sacred chamber, built by the love and | ery of the whole Bastion, is doubly monstrous, It is to be hoped ti Peete who attempted infamous work may yet pprehended, not only that they may be punish bes ‘hat they may beheld up to the execration world. The passing excitements of the electio: not be allowed to blant the vigilance of the ties. If the perpetrators of this infamons crime are to be captured atall it can only be effected by imme- diate effort. THE MAN THE PRESIDENT PAR- DONED. [From the St, Louis Globe (dem. ), Nov 10.)
