10 RACING AT. WASHINGTON. First Day of the Meeting at Brightwood Park. FOUR INTERESTING CONTESTS. Mayflower, Hobkirk, Hatteras and Derby the Winners. Wasmixaton, Nov, 14, 1876. ‘The races at the Brightwood Park course began this afternoon, but under very unfavorable circumstances, The weather was disagreeable and there were but few persons present, though of that few there were several ladies. The remotencss of the course from the city— some five miles—also had tho effect to keep many , there being no conveniences for reaching the place, THE YIRST RACE was a dash of a haif mile, for two-year-olds, catch weights, for a purse of $100, of which $30 wont to the Second horse and $20 to the third. The C. P, Burch’s chestnut colt Main Brace, by Prussian, dam by Charley Bell; W. Wych’s bay filly Mayflower, by Lynchburg, dam by Congaree, and A. B. Lowis & Co.’s gray colt Bosworth, by Bonnie Scotland, dam Metoor, by Childe Harold. Before the start Main Brace was the favorite by 5 to 3 over Mayflower and 5 to 1 over Bosworth, Tho youngsters got off well together, Mayflower in the lead, with Bos- worth second and Main Brace last, These positions were not changed, and Mayflower came to tho finish two lengths ahead of Bosworth, who led Main Brace Shree lengths. Time, 513, seconds, THE SECOND RACE was a dash of five furlongs, for three-year-olds, purse same as the first race; and Mr. Wyche’s chestnutjcolt Hobkirk, by Red Dick, dam by Tar River, 100 Ibs. ; C. Medinger’s chestnut filly LibbieL., by Bay Dick, dam by Joe Stoner, 100 Iba; H. Gaffney’s chestnut Olly Hattie F., by Leamington, dam Bonny Doon, and A 3B, Lewis & Co.'s bay colt Piuto, by Planet, dam by Voltigeur, 100 Ibs, started, Hobkirk was the favorite, 4 to 1, with Libbie L. the second choice. At the start Hobkirk led off, with Hattie F. second, Libbie L. third and Pluto fourth, Passing the judges’ stand Libbie L. went up ¥@ the second place and Pluto to the third place; buton Wee upper turn he aguin fell off aud Hattie resumed her placeas third. On tne backstretch she made a fash and lapped Libbie L. at the quarter pole, and on the lower turn went up second. Down the home- stretch Hobkirk camo under an easy pull, and finished two lengths ahead of Hattio F., who was two lengths ahead of Libbic L., with Plutoa badtourth. Time, 12063, THR THIRD RACE was a dash of threo quarters of a mile, for all ages; purse game as the proceding racos. The starters were W. Wycho’s bay colt Hatterad; three years, by Red Dick, dam by Planct, 90 lbs,; H. Gaffnoy’s bay prising, Burgoo, ee imported Hurrah, dam Emma owning, 107 Ibs Burch’s bay colt Wateree, four years oe by play dam by Charlie Ball, bo B. Lewis & Co’s bay colt Pluto, three Sean? old, by Planet, dam by Voltigour, 90 Ibs, and J. F. Wilson’s bay gelding Jack Trigg, five ears old, by Lightning, dam Sallie Morgan, 101 Ibs. in the pools Burgoo was the favorite at large odds, with Hatteras second, the fiela being little purchased. The horses got away well together, Burgoo leading, with Hatteras second, Pluto third, Wateree fourth and Jack ‘Trigg lust. Passing the jadges’ stand Wateree went up third Plato fell off. Burgoo held the lead until they reached the lower turn, when Hatteras made a dash and collured Dim. Down the homestretch the race was good, and the lash wus freely applied to Burgoo; but Hatteras came bome an easy winner, leading Burgoo one length, with Wateree second, two lengths bebind, and Pluto and Jack Trigg !ar away in the order in which they are named. Time, 1:19%. THR FOURTH RACE ‘was a steeplechase abvut two miles, over about fifteen wale lor u purse the same as the others. aban’s colt Bay Rum, 4 y by Baywood, joneretl, 138 ibs; H. Gafney’s gray gelding Derby 4years, vy Eugene, dam Kate Sovereign, 132 ibs, ; Hi. Gaffvey’s brown horse Culpepper, 5 years, by Revo er, dam Gentle Annie, 138 lbs; Thomas Murray’s chestnut horse Captain Hammer, 4 years, by Vandal, dam Dewdrop, 142 ibs.; and J” Wilson’s brown gelding Jack Yrigg, 5 years, by Lightning, dam Allie Morgan, 139 lbs, started. ‘Gaflney’s entry was the favorite, with Bay Rom second choice. The etart was in the junor Qeld near the judge’s stand and Derby led of, with Captain Hammer second, Culpepper third, Bay Rum fourth, Jack Trigg lett at the post, though he got off Afterward. Atthe third leap Captain Hammer went to front, besides which there was no change until at the eightn leap Bay Rum Jack [rigg bolted and went out of the race. The coutest was left to Derby and Captain Hammer, and the last named held the first place over ail the remaining leaps aud came first upon the track. The race was then very good, Derby made a dash and took the lead at the juages’ stand, though hard preased by Captain Hammer up tho backstrotch and around the jower turn. A distressing case of destitution and suffering has come to our notice at No. 420 East Eleventh street, Bebiad the lit hop kept by Mrs, Cullen there lives a worthy female aged nearly eighty, Mrs. wliza Drury vy name, who has been reduced from affluence to a siow death from cold and starvation. She is para- lyzed on one side, and therefore unable to go out to personally appeal tor the aid which she so urguently requires.
