M. ‘There is no reason fora change in the’ tone of the «comments that have been mado in this column for many days. Wall street has lost not a little of its in- fluence as an aggressive or suggestive power, and its stocks are as much obedient to natural causes which compel a decline as are the bonds, mortgages and other securities held by the fiduciary institutions of the-country. Not even capital can fight against fate. ‘Those who control it are gradually learning the lesson ‘that confidence is the outgrowth of improvement, and they are equally quick to peceive that none of this ele- ment now exists beyond that which is to be found in brokers’ offices, and the handiwork of a few local ma- nipulators Tbe principal speculation to-day was in Lake Bhore, Pacific Mail, Missouri Pacific, Union Pacific and Western Union. THB STOCK MARKET. Western Union opened at 76, advanced to 763 and ended at this price Paciflo Mail sold at 3534 036, It may be found by reference to a statement published elsewhere that the figures of oflictals compared with those of an “expert,” are not altogether encouraging. The greatest rally was in Missouri Pacific, which recovered from 23% to 21. New Jersey Central, after declining from 107 to 10234, rallied to 104 bid, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western declined from 1193, to 117% and finally re- covered to 118}4 bld. The wide fluctuations in these “two coal roads attracted much attention. Northwest ,common sold at S03¢ a 3814 a 5874., do. preferred at 53 053% a 52%. St Paul closed at 34!4 aftersales at 83%, Ohio and Mississippi was confined betwoen 165 01634, with a close at latter price. St Louisand Kansas preferred sold down from 27 to 26.
