NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 1874——WITH SUPPLEMENT Cruise of the New York Yacht Club. Hee enamel SPORTIVE RIVALRY. A Lovely Sail trom New London to Newport. | THE FOREMOST CRAFT. Newrorr, R. I, August 7, 1874, Glorious Weather favored the fleet to-day, and the ran to Newport was brimful of excitement from start to finish. Contrasted with the weari- some drift from the rendezvous to New London on Wednesday, it was ® most enjoyabie excursion. Although there was net what might be termed 8 race, there being no prize at stake, and the day’s gat! forming only part of the regular cruise, every- body knows that when his blood is up under the Amfiuence of 4 spanking breeze, 8 yachtsman, with even chances, will try to hold his own with all eompetitors bound in the same direction, and will | @fien risk the smash of his sticks | wo be ahead. And so it was to-day. ‘The schooners carried nearly all of their Facing canvas the whole way from New London, ‘while the little sloops bravely followed the exam- ple set by the larger craft, and altogether, espe- ‘cially when near the point of destination, ’ THE SPECTACLE ‘was enough to make the heart beat with delight. @he time of the different vessels will be seen by the annexea table of arrivals. The yachts kept pretty well together toward the close, so it can readily be imagined what effect was produced ag | | the competitors came bowling into Newport with @ wholesale breeze. 4s previously mentioned, a meeting was held on | ‘oard the Nagship yesterday, when it was decided | postpone the race from New London to the @ornfield lightship, owing to the length of | time occupied in coming from Glen Cove and the @onsequent fangue of tne different captains and erews. The start for Newport was set down Jor | wine o’clock this morning. The feet lay auietly at | anchor all day yesterday off the Pequot House, the | Adler, however, leaving for Newport, and several | f the other vessels making sbort cruises with pleasure parties and returning to their anchorage dm the evening. There were some festivities at the Pequot House, but most of the yachtsmen amused themselves on board their vessels with vocal and Mstrumental musical selections until an advanced bour of the night. It was regretted that the fleet could not remain over at New London another day nd bave a race, but as THE GREAT CORINTHIAN CONTEST a2 Newport, for wnich many of the yachts were entered, was fixed tor to-morrow, it was found impossible to prolong the visit of the squadron at ‘the iormer port. ‘This was a lovely morning, bright and cheerfal, ‘with a balmy breeze from the southward, and just | trong enough to raise the hope that the qualities | of the various yacnts wouid have a fair trial aur- img the day. Itisa short run to Newport from | with a good wind could readuy be accomplished in | four hours. And so the event was awaited with | preparawion was heard all over the fleet. As it ‘was generally understood that the vessels would get under weigh about nine o'clock and as the prospect for 4 GOOD START ‘Was all that could be aesired, a large assemblage @ongregated on the green opposite the Pequot House to witness their departure. There were in all seven schooners and four sloops—viz., the Alarm, 225 tons, A.C. Kingsland owner; Daunt- Jess, 268 tons, J. G. Bennett; Magic, 90 tons, W. T. Garner; Phantom, 140 tons, H. W. Osgood; Ram- Mher, 233 tons, W. H. Thomas; Restless, 95 tons, @.G. Haven; Wanderer, 208 tons, J, Stillman. ®loops—Gracie, 48 tons, J. R. Waller; Vindex, 54 tons, Robert Center; Vision, 53 tous, J. J, Alex. andre; Wayward, 32 tons, W. E. Morris; Qui Vive, 9 tons, Thomas Uispham, and the Egeria. Alto- gether the feet looked exceedingly pretty, and prior to the firing of the signal gon the deck of every vessel was the scene of bustle and excitement. It should be noticed, by the way, that some of tue sioops took time by the foreiock im the matter of heaving up anchors belore the P eerteme | im order to get anead in the start; bat senould be added, however, that the iron ‘Sloop Vindex waited for the signal. Notwitnstanding a few discrepancies, however, it was pleasant to | stone the eagerness with Which ail hands were | Teady to enter competition. At precisely nine A, ‘M. the flagship tired the signal gun to depart, the wind about south soutnwest and the tide atzebo. A prettier start Was never effected. Jips were run up in no time, while the rattling ef chains and anchors which were being hove w) made matiers lively for a minute or two, The it, ue sloops, with no working gear to bother them, ' Were, of course, the first to getof. The Magic, with characteristic alacrity, showed her heeis to. the schoouers, and her canvas flung rapidly she goon cleared away. The sloops Egeria, Wayward and Gracie led whe feet; but, auiortonately, the latter famous little craft carried away her jibboom | scene was to have all the wind she wanted. Meanwhile the sloops bad AN EXCELLENT between themselves, and altho! disabled, she, nevertheless, 61 CONTEST h the Gracie was led admirably, result to which a balloon jib sail contributed not @ little, Rarely has the fleet of the ee York, Yacht course than Club enjoyed better mye gs to-day. 6 Between this’ Magic, ‘Wanderer, Rambier, Dauntless and Phantom the honor of the first arrival evidentiy jay aod in this order they continued until long past noon.
