The Cfurt room was thronged, as usual. Michael ais caster of the bank, swora— when I heard the attempt to rob the bank I immediately dauaeaties to Mr. Gopsill, who was then in Phils @elphia, to tell McWilliams to return trmediatel's; Mr, Gopsill replied, saying that he would ind StcWiliiams and inform nm as soon as possible; ‘Ae did not return that mght; after the arrest I fold him I was sorry he was not here to get the CHedit of making the arrest; he said, , “qr 1s JST MY LUCK.” , Mr. Pélyton testified that he had seen McWilliams in a ‘Aw Haven Railroad car, returning to New ‘york, fon the Friday before his trial in October last. Detegtive Howard corroborated Deputy Sheriff Cromga’s statement regarding the Chief's escape fromAhe custody of the latter. Mr. Wanner, the proprietor of the american Hotel, swore that he had seen the three burglars there. The evidence given by Mr. Gopsill at the first trial was re- read) and offercd, It went to establish the facy that Mr. Gopsill gave to McWilliams in 'Philadelpnia the telegram = sent — by Bavidford, whereupon McWilliums remarked, “If I ‘wought there was anything in this I would go ‘wight on, but Sandford is @ nervous fellow and I ay go for nothing.” , After the arrangement of minor matters between counsel, the prosecuting counsel closed the case for she State and the examination of WITNESSES FOR THE DEFENCE ‘was begun. During Mr. Willlamson’s opening ad- -€ress he made pathetic allusions to the family of McWihams, when tears streamed down the face of ‘the latter.
