THE NAYHAN MURDER. More Mystery and Sperulation—Return of Deteciives from Europe—Where They Have Been. The detectives of the Central Police Ofice have re- cently expressed the belie! that the late Superin- tendent of Police and Captain Kelso were from the first satisied who committed the murder of Mr, Benjamin Nathan; but not possessmg the evidence to convict they felt 1t would be madness to make an arrest and subject the suspected party to public ex- posure, Within a few days two or three detectives have expressed thelr candid convictions that the criminal would yet be secured and brought to justice, One of these gentlemen, who, from the day of tae murder until the preseat thne, has been intimately associated in the work of cleariig Up the mystery, rowarked toa HEALD re. porter that before many days new light would be thrown upon it, and he {elt sanguine that the great aim of the force would lave been achieved. — For some time the public andthe press nave ceased to give the Twenty-third street tragedy any serious thoughts, believing it to be a mystery likely to re- main locked in the heart of the assassin for all time, Certain movements of the detectives and other Officials within the past three days have given rise to the suspicion—and It 1s only a saspiclon—that the authorities have seeured some new light. Dis- carding all surmises, it 18 proper to state just what these movements are and allow the public -to form their own conclusions. Soon after the murder—about the 10th of Ia) gust—Detective Join Dunne, of Capiain Koiso’s command, aad Detective West, of the Baliimore Joree, left for Uurope, under secret instructions trom the late Superintendent. ‘Tuey have travelicd i tie Interim over a Jarge portion of England, Ireland and Scotland tn search of corroborative tmony and returned to the city_on Thursday by tie stvam- ship Wisconsin, of the Williams & Guion line, On Wednesday ono of the Pollee Cominissioners in- structed a police captain to proceed to Sandy Houk, and, awalitag the arrival of @ kuropean steamer, telegraph the moment she was signalled. ‘t) European steamer ts supposed to be the Wisconsi upon which the detectives arrived, and some be- lieve that the detectives have brought with them important evidence, if not a prisoner or witness for whom they have sought solonz and diligently. ‘The detectives arvived in the Central building just as the funeral coriége of the estecmed ex-Superintendeut was filing past and Tell inio line at once. ‘Thetr freturn so unexpectedly caused some comments among the detectives not in possession of the secret of their European mis- ston, but nothing tangible was ascertained unill yesterday, Whiea the detectives admitted thit they ad been in the Uuited Kingdom in search of corre- borative evidence of some already taken in the Nathan murder case. When asked whether they had been successful an evasive answer was giveii and it is net by any means certain that their searches Were productive of any valuabie results; although the circumstances, smail fia thenselv that the detectives passed on the vessel under asst ed names, and that the stenographers at the Centre1 Oiice were yesterday called upon by detectives io take testimony, gives Fixe to a vague suspicion tha they were accompanied home by some peison either as a prisoner or as a witness, Itis hoped that suci is the case, anc that the missing links in the cnain of evidence, being woven about the oifender have been secured; but until more reliable data than 1s now attainable is secured it would be weil for the public to refrain from indulging in false hopes of the con- victton of the perpetrator of as vile a deed of blood ; issued by the head of the Interior Department, and CITY POLITIOS.
