HIS RETURN. Wak EXPERIENCES, Professor Joseph Henry, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, who left here about the latter part of May, with his daughter, for a European tour, returned to New York in the steamer Russia on Thursday, and arrived here the same evening. The object of his visit was tor the restoration of his health, and with a fur- ther view of making the acquaintance of the <orre-ponden’s of the Institution. Professor Henry made a tour through Eng- land, Ireland and Scotland, where he was cor- d «lly weleomed by scientific men, and where every efiort was made to contribute to his enjoy- ment. From Great Britain he went to Belgium, thence up the Rhine and through Switzerland, returning by way of France, where he was the representative of the United Statss to the con- gress called by the Emperor to consider the best method of making copies of the standard metre of France, and which met on the sth of Angust. He attended the congress, but his visit to France was curtailed by hostilities andthe order for all foreigoers to leave. He isited all of the principai cities in the countries above named, and paid special attention to tieir museums, libraries, and scientific estat- lishments, with a view to making any improve- ments in the Smithronian which might be deemed advantageous. Du. ing his visit to Great Britain, he appeared bi fore a commirsion of Parliament ard gave an accovut of the progress of the institution, the Duke of Devonshire presiding; was invited to and spoke at a great scientific meeting in Man- chester, held in the interests of the liberals, and he eat in courei! with the savants of Continental Europe ‘n Paris, and with learned men at Geneva, in Switzerland. At the breaking out the war betwren France and Prussia he was at Heidelberg, and as the means of transit from that place were en- angered, he found it expedient to proceed to Switzerland, in which country he found much to interest bim both in its works of nature and art. There are fifteen hundred irstitutions ‘1 Europe which the Smithsonian is in correepon- dence, and the personal acquaintane> which Professor Henry has made with scientific men conducting these institutions will be of great advantage to him, and to the institution he con- ducts with so much ability. He returns here with his health entirely restored, we are glad t> say, having been absent about four and a helf months. ———_____-+ee-____ THE WASHINGTON CANAL.
