8 - Ross of a Steam Tughboat Off Cape May— Perl) of the Officers, &c. On the 25th inst. the eteam tugboat Phenix, which ‘was being towed to this city from Baltimore by the steamer Sea Gull, belonging to the Commercial Steam- Doat Company, was struck by a gale off Cape May, and, being a frail concern, separated and sank. The Phenix ‘was a sort of river tug, in government service, and has Jatierly been lymmg up in Baltimore. She was being towed to this city by the purchasers to be used in minor employment here. The loss is regarded as of no account by the parties concerned, the boat being looked upon as worthless save for towing purposes, There was no freight lost. The officers on board the Phenix ran some wisk owing to the suddenness of the collapse. They were reseved and taken aboard the Sea Gull. We have re- evived the following relating to the affair:— @AkD OF THANKS TO CAPTAIN FISH, OF THE STEAMER SEAG ULL. The undersigned desires, through the Henatp, to ten- der to Captain Fish, of the steamer Sea Gull, bis officers and men, his grateful thanks for their heroic conduct fm saving the olticers and men of the steamer Phenix from a a8 watery grave, on the 25th inst., when the Phenix dont a4 a, fiftean miles east of Cape May, I would iw were in my power to give amore substantial expression ow. Seating. Pleasant memories follow brave deeds, and I know brave men wavt no thanks for doing their duty; but when I forget that brave old Cape Cod sailor, €aptain Fish, and his men, may my right hand forget its sunning. It’ was an hour that tried the courage as well as the skill of a sailor, and Captain Fish was equal to athe duty, The sea was so rough that the Sea Gull’s boats ould not be launched; we were gaved by the lifeboat, vent by messengers attached 'to each boat, which was the dirst time T ever eaw it done, and which, under God, was eur salvation. OLIVER L. BEARSE, Late te Captain of steamer Phenix. The Rights of Married Women.
