Tho subject of railroads is the occasion of = good deal secthing and simmering here. It became gencrally Known to-day that ‘the surface railways reported last week for Broadway and across town contained an extraor- inary number of names as corporators, and after some @xamination it was also ascertained that the radicals had madoa descent upon these bills and virtually taken pos- fession of them. Line of # ~ We notice that a line of steamers hae been established between this port and those of Laguayra aud Puerto Ca. bello, in Venezuela, to touch at St. Thomas both going and returning. The general increase of the trade be- tween the two countries bas for some time vack de- manded such a means of communication, and now that a railroad is in process of construction, and already near completion, between Puerto Cabello and San Pelipe, and another soon to be bailt between Laguayra and Caracas, connecting with the fine wagen road leading to the fer- tile valleys of Aragua, the productions of Venemuela, which, for want of a means of communication, could not be exported, will now be brought here to compete with others of the same class or inferior, thus lewening their price, and consequently placing them within the reach of the poorer classes of the community. The line of stenmers will, therefore, be mutually advantageous to both countries, Many persons abstain from visiting the United States on account of the inconveniences attending a sea voyage in a sailing vessel, or the changes of conveyance at St. Thomas and again at Havana, aride from the additional expenses involved in such changes With the present line the pleasure of visiting the United States, if it is visited for pleasure or for purposes of business, can be ished at but little cont. As the steamers touch at St. Thomas both on the out ward and revurn voyage, it will be a new means of com munication with that important island i ‘The first clase steamer Vicksburg wit be ‘the pioneer, ‘and will sail from this port on the Sth proximo, Captain Seandelia, well known and respected by all thos trading with Venezuela, and to whow exertions the establiet ment of this line is principality due, i her commander, the commercial firm of Messry. “mith & South street, are the owners Musica! THE BOARD OF WORK BILL. Another argument on the part of ‘ation was made before the Senate Committee in favor of bill creating a board of work. The discussion elicited array of many judicious suggestions; but the bill was shown to be so crudely framed as to put the argument of Mr. Noyes, who appeared for it, out of countenance. The provisions of the bill are so inn) Meable that no effort can bo made at this late stage of the session to render it feasible measure. THE PLATTSUURG AND WIITEIALL RAILROAD was put forward to a third reading in the Assembly. through the eflorts of Smith Weed to-night, This road will make an air-line connection between Montreal and New York, so that the rolling stock of the Grand Trunk Feet, The dill providing the bal- anoe of the apy to fiuish the Susquehanna Rail. road was also ordered to athird reading to-night.
