2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wroxespax, Nov, 8-6 P.M. ‘The stock market has been very much unsettled to- day. At the early session of the open board New York Central sold at 100 90%, Erie 97 a 34, Reading 11654, Michigan Southern 80%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 98, Rook Island (b. 3) 108, Northwestern 32%, preferred 66, Fort Wayne 105, MeGregor Western 24%, Toledo, Wabash aad Western 55, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3034, Canton 46%, Cumberland 445. ‘At the first regular board there was considerable de- pression, under sales to realize and the creation of a fresh short interest. New York Central closed 14s lower than ‘at the second board yesterday. The subsidence of the yecent special activity in this stock is supposed to be owing to Mr, Erastus Corning having abandoned the contest for control of the road. Erie closed 13 lower, fgh a largo amount of stock was called in by the Dull clique to-day. ‘This, however, ne- cessitated the calling in of their loans also, and the operation cut both ways. The expected “twigt!” not having been experienced, some wero @ieposed to believe that the leading member of the combination had sold out @ portion of his stock. Michigan Southern was 3% lower, Cleveland and Pitts burg 15, Northwestern 7%, preferred 13,, Rock Island %, Fort Wayne 1%, Cumberland %, Quicksilver 1, Can- ton %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 1%. Toledo, Wabash and Western was 8 per cent higher. Prairie du Chien gold at.160, Government securites were heavy under the London advices reporting five-twenties at 63 & 64 on the 28th ultimo, The latter of both issues declined 34; soven-thirty notes, second series, y. At the open board at one o'clock the market contin. ued weak, except for Cleveland and Pittsburg, which advanced to 94%. A large amount of stock was after- wards sold on t of a commission broker belonging to the public , whose failure was chicily attributed to transactions in Prairie du Chien, and this increased the prevailing distrust and depression. at the second regular board the market continued unsettled, Cleveland and Pittsburg closed 1% higher than at the first board, The clique manipulating the Jatter are trying to increase the ‘short’ inte- re in it, with a view to a “corner,” but thero is a wholesome fear among the bears of falling into the trap set for them after their experience of Prairie du Chien, and :t is doubtful whether the bull party will find it profitable to corner it in the absence of a larger short interest than now exists," Prairie du Chien gold at 185, but the transactions in it have been very light. The president and directors of the latter company were wnderstood to have decided upon con- verting the preferred stock of the road’ which has been authorized but not issued into common stock, and selling the same at once, for the sake of getling a high price for it, But this having come to the knowl- odge of the cornering party objection was raised, on the ground that the-consent of a majority of the stockholders was necessary to the legality of the conversion and sale, aud the president and d rectors were enjoined from pro- coeding in the matter. Northwestern advanced 3g, pre: ferred 5, Toledo, Wabash and Western 3, New York Cen- tral was % lower, Erie %, Reading 3, Michigan South- ern 13, Quicksilver 34, Canton 34. Ohio and Mississippi certificates were unchanged. Government s*curities were dull. Coupon five-twenties were 3¢ higher. Seven- thirty notes of the second series were 3% lower, and the third series sold at 967, a decline of 14 since aac afternoon. At the open board at haif-past three the market was a fraction lower, Pittsburg, McGregor Western and North- western preferred excepted. Erie closed on the cail at 94%, Reading 114%, Michigan Sonthern 96%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 9494, Cleveland and Toledo 103, Toledo, Wabash and Western 54, Northwestern 3234, pre- ferred 66!{, Fort Wayne 103%, Prairie du Chien 190 a 185, McGregor Western 2734, Ohio certificates 2014, Can- ton 454. Afterwards, on the street, the market improved, and Cleveland and Pittsburg and Northwestern preferred were strong. At half-past five P. M. the latter was sell ing at 6744 a 34, Pittsburg 95%, New York Central 9834, Northwestern common 33, Michigan Southern 7634 a 4%, McGregor Western 29 a 30, Erie 9434 a 34. Money was in more active demand on the Stock Ex- change, and there was a brisk inquiry for loans from the large speculative houses on the bull side. It is not im- probable, howover, that one or two of these secured a larger amount than their immediate necessities de- manded, and so far the movements of the loan market seemed rather artificial. The indications at the close of business were in favor of a some what more active demand for money to-morrow. Lenders are becoming distrustful of market values on the Stock Exchange, owing to the unreasonably hich prices to which some of the inferior non-dividend paying shares have been stimulated by cliques, and this feoling of dis- trust is spreading among the speculators and brokers, and materially reducing the volame of business, Tho “Prairie Dog” corner has, in this respect, proved a great stumbling block in the way of the bulls. Men are afraid either to buy or sell the active clique stocks, such as Pittsburg, old Southern, Wabash and Terre Haute, because, while liable to experience a heavy fall at any moment, they are still in the hands of cliques, which may run them up to astonishing figures when the rise is Jeast expected. This state of fecling is ‘unfavorable to the stability of pmces, and the present cornering movements are rapidly demoralizing the whole market. The discount line is less active and frat class commer- ‘cial paper passes at 7 a 9 per cent. ‘The gold market was depressed to-day by Sub-Tr sary sales. The opening price was 147%, from which there was a steady decline to 14634, 146% a § being the closing quotation. Loans which were made at 1.16 per cent early in the day wore made fat in the afternoon, and in exceptional instances lenders had to pay interest for having their gold carried. Foreign exchange was inactive. Bankers’ bills at sixty days Were quoted at 109% a 2%. Potroloum stocks were generally lower at the first board than at the same time yesterday—namely, Pithole Creek 70c., United States 10c., Webster 5c, Bennehoif Run was $2 higher. Atthe second board the market was irregular. Pithole Creek declined 80c., closing at $17 40; Bennehoff Run $17, Buchanan Farm 79c., Brad- ley $115, Manbattan 25c., Oil Creek $1 29, Excolsior S6c., United Petroleum Farms 60c., United States $28 10, Webster $1 77. ‘The Philadelphia Ledger publishes the following ac- count of the dividends paid by the banks of that city :— ‘Tho carnings for the last six mouths have been large, and the banks seem very generally to have come to the conclusion that the proper disposition of the profits, after a sufficient reserve, which should be fixed and main- tained, is to divide them to the shareholders. The West- ern Bauk has made the almost unequalled dividend of too per cent over and above its reserve fund, and this, too, aftor having paid ten per cont in May last; being Sie por cent in one year, It is proper to observe that a portion of these profits arise from the jum realized on the sale of its specie. It holds, however, a epecie reserve of over one-fourth of ite capital, and $665,600 im tender notes, The Western shows, in tho last weekly state- mon of averages, a discount line of $1,600,310, and a line of $1,442, 085—over three millions of dollars of per “tive resources in the two items named. Ofe ¢ of $400,000 there is no wonder it makes large ‘The Kensington announces the very large dividend of fifteen per cent. In May it paid ten per cent from the legitimate business of the bank, and also percent from the proceeds of the being in all fifty per cent paid in cash to within the year, besides adding a very handsome sum to its alrea:ly | surplus and carrying twenty per cent to the salaries of its oificers.
