Said. to. be Reinforced hy General Grant. ae, ae. Wasuimeron, Sept. 23, 1863. Despatches from General Rosecrans, dated Chat- tanooga, September 22, three and five P. M. (yes- terday afternoon), were received by the govern- ment this morning, from which it appears that the enemy's attack upon General Tfomas’ corps (Rorecrann’ Jeft) omMonday afternoon was hand- somely repulsed, and General Thoman’ forces marched quietly to the position they were about to take when assaulted. ‘The official despatches of Monday evening stated that two divisions of General Longstreet were ad- vaneing wpon General Rosecrans’ left at four o’elock that afternoon. It trened out, however, that this movement was merely for the purpose of # reconnoissauce, as no attack waa made by the rebels. The order of General Rosecrans for his entire | command to concentrate was accomplished be- | fore midnight on Monday, and he is now ina strong defensive position, which can be easily held until reinforcements arrive. The ovement of our troops was executed in excellent order, and, although they bad worked ; hard for «everal days and nights, they were in the best of spirits. Fonr thousand of our wounded were removed from the field after the battle of Sunday. General Lytle was the only general officer killed ‘on our side, while Bragg acknowledges Ws loss in. officers to be very heavy. ‘The regulars (our reserves) went into battle six- teen hundred strong, and came oat with only four hundred-wnd fifteen, ‘This shows the persistency with which our troops contended for every inch of groutd. General Rosserans has performed wonders in reaching his present position, after fighting with his single command egeinet the immense forces of picked troops that were combined against him. Tu two or three days General Rosecrans will be able to assume offensive operations aga When the last despatch of yesterday closed the enemy was quite active. He hed been making approaches all the worning General Rosecrans’ men were for another encounter. From imtelligent officers who have arrived from the front } have been enabled to glean considerable important mews concerning the late battle in Northwestern Georgia, Ae lstited im my despatch op Sunday night, Geveral Rosecrans a week or ten days ago had made up bis mind © advance South, and at least capture Rome, if not Atiante, The respective corps of Generals Thomas, Crittenden and kicCook moved upon different routes, but with in- structions to mass, and how to do it, if cannonading should be hoard. It was believed that the omemy was t Pigeon Moun.ain, erecting pew works in addition to those which nature thrown up, as @ range of moun- taine separated the two armies, and no communication could be effected except through Blue Bird, Pigeon, ‘Wing's and Cottell’s Gape. ‘The utmost caution wag maintained, aud preparations made and carried out for apy emergency. The avenues for retreat were Jaid out iv case of disasterr; benides a large reserve moved im striking ‘listance to render as- Sigtance if ubsoiuiely necéssary. Realizing hisextreme @istance from his bane, avd the fact that hie situation wan in the heart of the rebel dominions, Gen, Rosecrans exhibited prudence and sagacity due the occasion. At about a quarter to clevep ou Saturday morning, without ekirmishing, the enemy, baving massed at least two-thirds of their available force upon their right, precisely as they did at Chaplin Hills and Btono river, pounced down upon the veteranaapder Geveral ‘Thomas upon the left; and, so suddes and Gerce was the Altick, that the whole column Inyoluntarily fell back. Ia the charge we lost nearly eight bundred prisoners and reverq! pieces of artillery. At this juncture the eagage- ment became general along the whole tine. Necessarily, '® portion of the troops which bad assaulted Thowae ao" vigorously were transferred to their respective divisions— & disposi ion which Thomas. took advantage of, ap he quickly threw bis whole corps upon the foe, took several bundred prisoners, and recaptured five out of the six gune juet lost. From this time until dark it was give and take, neither side gaining a decided advan. tage. The condition of the country provented a free fase of the artiliery, ©0:' for several hours bat few caunon were Gred. On the ivth, the battle terminating about dark, it fovud that our Ieee wae «ight, considering tbat much close fighting had taken place. During Saturday night our army threw up rifle pits near West Chickamauga river, besides clearing the road, in cage it should be deemed advieable to fail back upon Rossville, or even Chattanooga, between Yookout and Mission Midge. ‘The enemy's right extended to the north- cost as far va the Western and Atlantic Railroad, com- tmanded by Polk, and protected by Wharton's cavalry, while their left touched a point about five miles south- weet of Laiayette, and commanded by Gen. A. P. Hill, with Forrest's cavalry on his flank. Farty Sunday morning came again the enemy with re- newed vigor, aud #0 furious was the assault that the whole lire fell back. ‘Themas’ corps again bore, the brunt of the battle, and the divisions of Rosseau, Negley, and Reynolds fought gloriously. Enrly in the day tho regular brigade, commanded by General King, found steel pitted against superior numbers, Captains Kettetlas aud Molli gan fighting their battalions mapfully. General King, who was wounded in the arm at Stone river, was again disabled and'taken prisoner, General Lytle, one of the bravest men of the war, wae killed, and it is said hie body will arrive here to-aight, to be sent to Ohio te-mor- row moruing. The latest tuformation I hare of @ strictly reliable pature i# up to Sunday night, when tho battle termi- nated with a slight advantage to the enemy. ur new twenty four-pounder Napoleon guus made shocking reve) sccrifices, and none were lost. Jey’s divivion, was wounded early in Sunday's fight. ‘The cavalry force was under the command of General Robert B. Mitchell, General Stanley being confued to his bed. Several cavairy fights took place on Sunday, the enemy being worsted every time, notwithstanding their superiority iu oumbers, My informant thinks that if even our army should be compelled to [ail back upon ‘Chattaneoga, it will got be a failure, os the programme ‘was laid out io that wise; and at thet point'be could ane eeeaully realst twice bi number.
