8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Weonzspay, Oct. 10-6 P. ¥. ‘The moncy market is generally reported easier ‘two-day, bot most of the transactions of which we bear are at our last quotations. Most oi the brokers are paying seven for call loans, and we bear of no paper going below 6} per cent, but at ‘hese rates there is more money secking employ- ment than there was. The conservative movement ‘ef the banks during the past six weeks has ex- ercised a very beneficial effect on public confi- @enee, and has counteracted the uneasiness which Politica! agitations at one time threatened to create. ‘As usual on Wednesdays, there was nothing @one in foreign exchange to-day. The market closed dull. Beth the bulls and the bears were disap- with the stock market this morning. ye do believed it would be @ good time to buy stocks; the bears expected a serious fa on the republican triumph ia Pennsylvania, Je fact, the market was simply dull at a very small @echine. There were sellers of all the speculative wtocks at yesterday’s prices, both for cash and on time, but there were also buyers enough to prevent prices falling to any extent. Thus far, it is evident ‘that the holders of stocks have not been frightened dy the result in Pennsylvania; what the future may ‘ring forth no man can tell. Real estate, which would be the first interest to feel any general de- sarnctive agency, and which would probably suffer | more and longer than any other kind of property, fw also quite as firmly held as it was a week ago. ‘Phere was a heavy business this morning in Ce: ‘wal, Brie and the leading Western weld down to 87], but closed 58! Erie to J8, elosing that bid. The Western shares were all a faction lower. The business on the Dinois reads for October promises well; the first week on most ‘ef them will show a bandsome increase, though tbey are comparing with a very fair month last year, Some of these roads ought to earn a dividend im October alone. Coptracy to genera! expectation, the greater proportion of the cattle on eale at the Washington drove yard to-day were of s very ordinary quality, and the market was ac- cordingly destitute of that buoyancy which is so requisite for a quick, animated market. For prime builocks there was an anxious/ inquiry; but the few that were offered this week were taken yesterday morning, leaving only the tnfetior and ordinary descriptions for to-day’s mar- ket, As the cold weather approaches we occasionally hear of fancy cattle being offered for sale; and we learn that about Thankegiving Day some of the choice: ‘beeves that have ever been exhibited at the Washington drove yard will be offered there; and this is say- ing a great deal; for the fattest eteers that have been served up at our first class hotels have been sold at that place. The general quality of the offerings on sale this week was much below the average, and bat fora few pons of rien enttle Re fGrst clase butchers would have compelled to make their selections from ordinary Jote; as it was, mapy of them procured only a short sup- ply, and will have to make their . im the Ber- gen Hill yards on Monday, or at om’s early in the week, in order to ly the wants of their customers.
