It was never anticipated that in such a small place ao much prison room would be required. Our government are bound by lew to send them back, but are waiting in the hope of moking to be offered the mission te Engiand, which bo] PRRBIBLE TORNADO IN LOWA AND ILLINOIS. will accept, end play the réie of Van Buren, 60 as to be ready for the republican nomination in 1864. Under these circumstances Seward will lend his aid to the republican Presidential ticket, and Thurlow Weed will support it in the Zven- ing Journal, Indeed, already the Seward organ begins to say that Lincoln will carry every State in the North. But how this is to be done we are at a loss to know. Fremont, who hed a far better chance in 1856, did not carry every State in the North. All the abolitionists proper of the Garrison and Wendell Phillips schoo! who will vote for Lincoln voted then for Fremont, and vast numbers of conservatives voted for him who will not vote for Lincoln. On the contrary, from the revolutionary developements of the republican party, and its rapid progress towards the dissolution of the Union, the con- servative element is scared away from its ranks, and notbing is left but abolitionism pure and simple. Lincoln, therefore, will not poll as large a vote as did Fremont, and he will not get New York, nor New Jersey, nor Pennsyiva- nia, ner Indians, nor Illinois. If any good de- mocrat who “will run well in the Middle States Great Destruction of Property and Loss ef Life. Cwcaco, June 4, 1860. A terrible tornado passed over the eastern part of Iowa and the northwest part of Ilinols last night. The tele- graph lines weat of the Mississippi being down, we are ‘unable to ascertain how faf west the Tornado reached, ead what is the real amount and iss of life and pro- perty. ‘The tornado commenced at Clinton, Iowa, at half-pest seven o'clock last evening, and although lasing but two anda half minutes, caused more destruction of life and Property than any similar storm that has ever visited this portion of the country. ‘The towns of Camanche, Iowa, and Albany, Illinois, on opposite sides ofthe river, and five miles eouth of Citn- tom, were completely demolished. In the former place thirty two dead bodies have alreaiy been taxes from the ruins, and there are still a number that cannot be got «'. In Albapy, five or six dead bodies Lave been found, ‘with about fifty wounded, some of them seriously. We have not yet been able to obtain a complete list of the victims. ‘The citizens of Fulton, Illinois, and Clinton, lowa, are dolag everything in their power to relieve the sufferers. From other towns on the route of the tornado that can be reached by telegraph, we learn that the destruction of Dfo aod property was equally as great. At Morrison, Mlinols, the following aro killed, as far ‘hs these wo have been able to learn:—Mre. Richmond; Mr. and Reet Ate te caning then ta teks | should be nomioated at Baltimore, Lincoln } irs. Dorr; George Romer; boy named Barnun. The native barbariem and idolatry, and that st a ill be overthrown with » tenfold greater ent wt; Mr. Richoneed, Horats Mas’ defeat than Fremont suffered in his contes with Buchanan. Fremont was a conservative, and derived a large share of his support from the conservative and mercantile classes, who abhor revolution. On the contrary, Liacola, who {is proved by his own reeord to be a revo- lutionary abolitionist, will have these votes arrayed against him, and will have to depend exclusively for his support on the fanatical clas, and the political gamblers, who, for the epoils of office, would risk everything—the safety of the country and their hopes ot Heaven. If with such aid he can carry every Nortbern State, or apy of five or six which we could name, then we will admit that history is a fable, that facts are not etubbora things, that figures lie, and that ai! our calculations are in vain. At Lynden, three miles south of Sterling, several por- eons were killed and Gtteen persons in that vicinity were b-dly wjured ty having arms and lege brokea. Tne storm passed two miles north of Amboy. Report says that over ten lives were lost there and @ number badly irjured. The names of the killed, ss far as known, are ‘Mrs. Mose and@ child named Biluby. The injared are Mr, Moss and daughter, Mr. Sackett, a bey named North- way and Mr. Wright. ‘The tornado appears to have taken a course almost due east from the Mississippi to Rock river. Soarcely a house orabarn on the direct track, which was about half a mile in width, was left standing. From all accounts not less than sixty-nine lives were lost, The extent of Camage to property, which is very large, cannot be fully ascertained for some time. LATER. ‘The names of those killed by the tornado at Albany, Ti., Yast night, are D. Buck, F. Efver, Mr. Sweat, two children of Mr. Riley, acd Miss Ryder missing. The fu tally wounded are Mr. Riley, Miss Mary Stagg, and Mrs. ‘Slocum. ‘The badly burt are, Mr, Parkins, Mrs. Sweat, Mrs. Cas par aod child, Mrs. McMann, Moser Bishop, wife and ch!id; Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Whitcomb, leg broken; Mrs. Ffner, Several others were more or less injered. Ai public meeting of the citizens of Fulton it was re solved to furnish the soiferers with homes and all the us. sisuance required. country nothing whatever. ahemeelves desire to stay, and it is a hardship im every way to send them back. Many of them will perish if given in charge of the Colo- nization Society. Massachusetts and the other anti slavery States of the North, who worship the negro, ought to take hold of these fall blooded, pure Africans, dividing them among them in proportion to population, and thar determine what can be made of such materials If their negro philantbropy, however, is only profession, and for political effect, or if the ciimste of New Eogland should be too cold for the children of the sun, then they ought to be apprenticed to the planters of the Southern States, and brought under the benign infa ences of civilization. There is ample room for them sll in Texas. How much better to send them there than to Gainea! Here they will be benefitted themselves in their most material inte rests, while they would assist in developing the resources of the country and add to those pro- duetions necessary to the existence or comfort ef the white man all over theworld. Ia Africa they would be only swelling up the dark cata- logue of crime and cannibalism, and never bave a chance of being elevated from their horrible condition. With far less inhumanity might Congress un- dertake to send back the Germans or Irish who are landed on our shores. The British goverrment seem to know much better the value of an able bodied population, for they send the captured negroes to their colonies, where they are bound as apprentices, taught the rudiments of the Christian religion, and subjected to the discipline and restraints neces- tary to their civilization, while the colonies and the mother ceuatry are enriched by these valuable accessions of labor suited to a tropi- cal climate.
