A meeting of brokers was held this afternoon in the rooms of the Stock Exchange, for the purpose of taking measures for the eatablishment of s Mio ing Board. Eloquent speeches were made by Co) Stebbins, Messra, Ashley, Cutting, Graham and others, and a psper was drawn up and signed, con stituting the signers a Mining Board. The danger Tahea which the new mining board must avoid is treading too closely in the steps of the old mining board ot 1854, which, as mapy remember, died unregretted within & couple of years of its establishment, having cut iteelf aloof from the really great mining ¢nter sented Capt. John Baxter, of the chpper ship Nabob,® massive gold chronometer watch, of Charles Frodsham's upon which ts the Sallowing Se ety S prises of the country, and devoted ita sete to eat» es » by | mines which only existed on paper, or which never ral AB Io ain ap gh zie 4 had been and never could be otherwise than ruin- ous to all parties concerned. If the new mining board ‘will establish a rigorous rule for the exclu- sion of fraudulent and sham stocks; if they will de- vote their attention to the really great mining in- terests of the country—the Lake Superior copper mines, the Pennsylvania coal and iron, the Wiacon- sin lead, the California gold and silver, and such other good mines as are known or may hereafter be discovered—it will render good service, and will be welcomed alike by the public and all true mi ners. As Mr. Ashley remarked, “s mining fever has hitherto been an event which assisted sharpers in disposing of bogus stocks to the public;” if the new board will pre vent this in future, it will prevent much mischief and be a usefal institution. In the course of his speech Mr. Ashley gave the statistics of the two leading Lake Superior mines. By the arrival of the Nova Scotian at Farther Point, we have further news from Europe, all of which iscommercially favorable. The funds are reported higher; wheat is firm; cotton unchanged.
