There was no Fhelter at band for such @ vast multitude, but all were so eager to witness the fea: that they remained until the rein came down in torrents, and then all did not leave. Some rougbt shelter where it could be found, while others stood firm and met the storm in the open field as tho storm came ou there was a desire that Delave should perform the feat by anticipating the time and disappointing those yet to come rather than those already there. This course would, we think, bave been tbe beat, under the circum stances, and M. Detave was disposed to do so, but obers, who had something to say about it, arged delay, alleging ‘at the shower would bo light, and that the feat crald bo periormed afterwards. A few the grounds thinking sbat the walking would be postponed, asthe rope was wet and thus made unsafe Indeed, many who had croaked before yeaterday, and who went to the groand t find fault ‘and belie Delave, said that he had not the courage to walk over the rope, wet or dry. They wero mistaken in the metal of the man. He had determined to walk the rope, and, Id have done 80 just as the rain came on, but by some singular omission BO rosin was at hand to apply to his shoes. gore were despatched for this indispensable article, but ere they returned the clouds broke. Soon after four o’clock the sky became clear, and the sun shone with a power sciticient to dry the apparel of those who had stood out in the storm. “At ten minutes past four Dalave appeared, Gressed in his circus uniform, and went straightway to the end of the rope upon the Falls field. With his ap- pearance there was a general rush to the bauk and con- siderable confusion, but when it became evident that he bad determined to cross the river, the multitude became quict and soon breathlestiy slient’as he took his position and made ready for the journey, Delave made his bow to the audience, took up his pole and waiked boldly but cautiously forward. He had not gone far before it was apparent that he labored under dis aavantages The rope was imperfectly stayed, not drawn as tight as it should have been, and his balancing pole was 80 limber that it frequently caught in the guys. And what ig more, the rope was wet. But Delave moved on, balanc ig bimeelf against the swaying of the rope with 80 much skill as to eat! all that he bad confidence in him. self, As he approached the sheet of falling water over which the rope passes at the west end, it was thougat by many that he would falter, but he did net and pasm@d sately to the roof of the sawmill. His arrival on the west Bide was greeted with cheers that rent the air and echoed slong the chasm of the river below. After remaining about four minutes upon the west side, Delave again took up his pole for the return. He walked steadily forward to the centre of the river, and there seated himself, throw- ing his pole across the guys. He then laid himself ee the rope lengthwise, first backward then forward. proceeding a little ‘farther he stopped, and resting first upon one foot and then yu} another, bowed very low to the audience in Falls field, He next walked rapidly te the place of starting, making long strides as he ascended to the east bank of the river. His was the signal for immense cheering, and the success ful adventurer was seized by his friends and borne ‘away iv triumph. The audience then speedily withdrew, satisfied that Delave bad successfully performed all ‘that be had promised to do, and he performed it under great diradvantages. The rope was wet and not properly stayed. Those who have seen Biondin walk at Niagara all agree that this feat of Delave was more perilous. Blondin’s rope is firm, and does not yield beneath his step; neither is there # side are so arranged that his weight tends to make them tighter. But the reverse was the caso > terday with Delave. Some of his guys were siacki by the depression, and the rope had a great deal of side sway, far more than it would have bad if the stays had been perfectly adjusted. On the whole {t was a great triamph for Delave. Blon. din was present, and we are told that he said a few minutes before Delave went upon the rope that it was not in a sate or suitable condition for aman to walk Those who bave saidso much egainet Delave, and endeavored to make people believe that he lacked courage and ability to perform the feat, are now silent, and find their guns spiked. Not one of them can be seen to-day, We are told upon good authority that two of the guye to Delave’s rope were jerked violently at the shore by gome persons, yesterday, while he was passing over. Wo are hardly Willing to believe that there were thoze pre- sent 80 fiendish ag to do such an act with malicious intent. We know that there were those who said a great many mean things of Delave and of the Rochester peoplo, be cauge they were come how in the interest of Biondin ‘and Niagara Falis; but we do not waat to believe they would do so mean an act as to attempt to throw Delave from the rope. Theae fellows will be geen here no more, Delave will walk sgain next Tuesday, and woe to the man wno throws any impediment in his way. The people of Ro- chester ca take care of him, and they have seen enough of his enemies to be able to identify them every time they appear, Beyond the damage done to clothing by the rain, which must bave been great, nothing occurred to mar the plea sures of the day. ‘The multitude of strangere ieft tho city im the afternoon and evening, and all was quiet ut an early hour ef the night. The bay consequently presented a busy gcere, and merchandise waa rapidly moving from and to our steamships and railroads; merchaats were az- dive in their operation; and the Indice, too, were availing themselves of the opportunity to do their shopping, and take the exercise that in sultry weather they woult yearn or, but dare not indulge in with a hope of pleasurable en- Joyment. Physicians wear the most meiaucholy counte hances of apy of our citizen. The times are getting tongh for them, and that, too, in the faco of the high price of provisions that sugurs the general succese Vat por vades all branches of business save theirs. Waile wo but exult inthe bappy influences exerted upon ear ait!- zene in the growing health and prosperity of Savannah at | this time. While the earth, which had previously been in @ thirsty condilem, bas abeorbed the heavy rains that by fallen 20 reearsity upon it, the clouds bave not per. mitted the severity of the sun’s influence during the pro- cess of abrorption. Ip a word, we would say to onr friends everywhere, our city is enjoying the beet of health, the finest spirits, and the surest success—the fabrications of her slanderers abroad to the contrary notwithstanding. — Savannah Republican, August 18. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarvrpay, Avguat 20—6 P. M The steamship Hungarian, which arrived this day w Farther Point, in the St. Lawrence, brings four days later news, The funds are quoted 3; a 3¢ higher; cotton steady and breadstuffs dull. The details will be found in another Would be orry for them in their sai plightwe caanot | } column, The Fulton and City of Manchester sailed to-day for ' Europe, and carried out, the former $416,280, the latter $648,000 in specie on freight; making the total shipment of the day $1,064,280, rather more than wae anticipated ‘as occurred at the close of last week, a leading foreign banker decided, at the last moment, to ship some $200,000 in gold. The increased ease in money is quite marked to-day; feveral brokers have money left with them at five per cent, Exchange on Europe closes very dull and flat. Some decidedly firet class bills have been sold for to-day’s steamers at 109%. Next week the foreign bankers look ior bigher prices, The activity in the stock market continues, and the prices of to-day are,as = goneral rule, higher than tne highest of yesterday. The purchases seem more gene rally distributed than they were yeaterday among the members of the board, Several commission brokers tated that they bad filled orders at the board this morn ing. Parties who bought stocks at 10 @ 15 per cent higher prices than those now ruling, are quite likely to teke this opportunity of averaging. The most active stock of the day covutinues to be Michigan Southern guaranteed, which advanced to 25, and was in demand at that price at the cloge of official business. We haye little to add to what ‘wo said yesterday in reference to this stock. The earnings Of the first fortnight of August fall about $14,000 short of the earnings of the corresponding period of Inet year; and from various causes, chief among which isthe fact that earnings of the two last weeks of August, 1868, were un usually large, it will be well not to expect an increase till September. Toledo was algo active at an advance of one per cent. Galena was steady, Rock Island was higher. Now York Central advanced one-half per cent and was in good demand, There was no change in the price of Hud ‘on River or Harlem, which for the present seem neglect- ed, State stocks were firm at yesterday’s prices. The marke) wae quite strong at the close, and though, a8 usual, there was no second board, there was a good deal of ani. mation in the street throughout the afternoon. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasury to-day was as fol- lowe :— Total receipte.. Tho Schuylkill Navigation Company brought down 30,716 tons, making a total tonnage this goason of 737,128, against 647,696 last season. ‘The Schoharie Republican states that Judge Gould has rendered bis decision in the cage of the Albauy aod Sus quebanna Railroad against tho towns of Seward, Rich. mondyiile, Cobleshill and Schoharie. Last fal! injanc tions were granted on motion of citizens of these towns restraining the town commissioners and Board of Super visors from issuing bonds to the road and raising monoy to pay the interest on bonds that had been isgued. ‘This was diseolyed, and the railroad company brought an ac tion for damages. Among other questions raised in the suits, it was claimed by the towns that ‘the consent of a majority of the tax-payers, representing a majority of the taxable property”’ in the several towns, bad not been ob tained, and the bonds of tho several towns could not therefore be issued in aid of the company. By consent of parties the case wag referred to Judge Gould for de cision.
