NEW Interesting Letter from Dr. Elits. DR. ELLIS, THE ALLBGED CONFIDENOER MAN, DEFENDS BIMSBLF—FULL AND AQOUBATS HISTORY OF Hig LIFE, BTC. {10 THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD, Thave been trying for three days to get the car of the public; but although I palda young man $5 on Saturday to copy and communicate my letter to the press, I have fallod till now. Iapprehend my{readers who have secon the various statements of the press in reference to my alleged resoality, will think that I am entering upon a hopeless undertaking in trying to exonorate myself from that pitony inundation which the newspapers have poured forth on my devoted head, What have I got to say in re- ply to the articles headed ‘+ Exploits of an M. D.,’’ ** More about the Swindler Ellis,” ‘‘ Further Revelations as to the Ellis Bwindle?”? &c. How am to account for my sum- mary arrest and incarceration for the ‘ Pelion upon Ossa’’ of vituperation, and especially for the immense array of sind ‘Against me for fraud? This letter, doubtless, finds the pubiic congratulating itself that such a votorious defrauder and swindler is safely ensconced in the Tontbs, where tailors, medical instrument venders, boarding housekeepers and rich widows will henceforth De free trom his depredasions. ad for facts. Ium a graduate of Trinity College, Eng ‘s member of the London Coliege of Surgeons, and of the the aban College of Physicians, and also & licentiate ef ho Dublin Lying in Hospital, ‘ahd bave beou Acsistant fy in the Britisn army. I have got ail my sis, and am prepared to exhibit them. I came Boaton tn 1847, and practised there ten years. Oa the You aay of July 1888, Topened my office in Bioocker atroot, ‘N.Y. eft. Boston I was worth $7,000, which I very foolishly Piaveobat to Canada, During’ the ret six months that I practised tm New York I made $2,100. I always succeeded and made money tn the piac- tiee of m} . sion, Bat how aia [ get involved? Aout il I was sued by Chandler Smith, a tailor, for a suit nea lotbes which I ordered but refused, because taey didn’t fit and consequendy were entirely uselees to me. He took judgement agaivst me, and I settled the matter to the satisfaction of Mr. Van Buren, bis lawyer, Bat Mr. Seixas, Mr. Van Boren’s partner, during Mr Van Buren’a absenee, attempted to enforce payment against me 4 second time. Two motions were heard before Judge Daly in the matter, in which I appeared against nim ia persoo, showed him up to the court ag be deserved, and took $10 baad against him in each motion. first that 1 ever heard about any fraud or gett in my matters bas been since the affair with Seixas. I believe him to be tho metigator of all the complainsts against me, I will now reply to these charges in order. 1. The goods obtained from Murphy were not ordered by me or for my use, but by another person, in my name, and for which he secks to hola me responsible Tne transaction took place over six montos ago. I have paid Murpby over $100, and never asked or obtained credit, ‘and consequently had no occasion to make any represen: tations as to my property. 2. That nocharge has ever been made by a person named Lester, but Mrs. Roberts, of Thompson street, was glad to be aliowed to withdraw the charge she made of any kind were over betore Jus- tice Dusenberry, and the remainder of the story is equally ee and malicious. The goods purchased from Mr. Huerste! were return- oa long since, and never excovded $55 ia valuo, 4. Berian’s is a simple debt of $7, for hardware. Tho amount of this bill has never but oace been demanded, Too goods were procured by a written order, and [ never saw the parties. 6. Polhemus & De Vries have done my printing for a long time. This bill is one of many which I have paid them, and they never applied for this, as the printing of my cards was done in May. ©. Mr. Wilson, the stabie keeper, Ido not owe anything for carriage hire, but I do owe him a balance for boardin, my horse. He says he never made any complaint, anc had no reason to do so, as I always paid my board ‘bilis month} Thave paid him T. Dr, Tadman’s is a balance of $15. a large amount of money, and baving withdrawn my pa- e, which amounted to considerable, he feels no doubt annoyed, but I learn has never made any com- it. 8. I never bought a book in Maiden lane, nor do I know of @ publishing house there. My books I Dovgat and paid for in Philadelphia. 9. I never knew any person, or had any transaction with any one who lived or is now living in Watertown, Connecticut, and never wae there in my life. 10. Inever to my knowledge bad any dealings with a Mr. Sayres in Brooklyn, or elsewhere. So much for these statements. Now the cause of this Persecution is simply this:—I am a witness in suite to be tried in the Marine and Supreme Courts against persons ‘who committed an assault and forcibly entered the house where I was boarding. They thus got ho'd of my papers, and, in order to prevent my testifying, have indu sed those two} persons, by mirrepresentations, to make their com- plaints, which Iam fully prepared to meet. Their attor- ney is the motor, and the obviousness of their falsity and malice was apparent to every one. ‘Tis true that I, in common with every man, am owing bills, but I owe none that I will not pay. My property, illegally seized at the instigation of the lawyer, and now in tae baads of the sheriff, they seek to deprive meof, and by this course to drive me out of the city, in which they will be sorel; appolated. I enjoy the confidence of a large number of respectable citizens, have a large practice to which I devote my whole time ‘among those who are able and those una- ble to pay. Iam hourty about my business, have seen erly ail these parties daily, and never heard any com- plaint, and am able to produce au overwheluiug muvuut of highest testimony as to my character, which, by these proceedings and newspaper articles they seek to impatr. But, rely’ on the integrity of my motives, and the Juatness of public decision, I am willing to await the re- Bult, and resume my position a8 an industrious and re- spected member of @ reputable profession, that I have in this country for thirteen years, and which has enabled me to live respectably and contribute to the wants of others, Iam determined to live down the slanders and malice of those who seek to injure me solely because I Ene not submit to wrong and fraud. My counsel, in whom I have full confidence, Lede me that the ‘examination already had sho the facts be law entirely exonerate me from thing Sppreectiog false pretences jor any other crime. I have the honor to sir, your obedient servant, TAOS. T. ELLIS. bey S.—In relation to the letters Had avers to come from Canada, I would say that I know them to have been writ- ten in Brooklyn. Thetr contents are false. There is flo person in Canada—my wife having died over two years ago—but my son, who has any claim on me whatever. I ‘will send you to-morrow a certificate signed by a number of gentlemen, some of whose names have been used as complaining, denying that they ever did so, or had Cae reason to doubt my integrity.
