The Cruise of the St. Louts, OUR NAVAL CORRESPONDENCE, Unrrap States Sine Sr, Lous, San Juan pet Nonre, March 4, 1859. } The Squadron After the Puibusters—John Bulb Puzcled— Oruise of the St. Louis—An Exciting Chase— What She Caught—Naval liems—is Oe Brooklyn a Steam Joke? dc, he. ‘The mail steamer leaves here to-day to connect with ‘Me mail at Aspinwall for New York; I will, therefore, ‘twansmit you a succinct outline of the intelligence from ‘this quarter. Inomediately on the arrival of the mail steamer Illinois @t Aspinwall, on the 13th ult,, the Flag Officer sent orders to our Commander to proceed immediately to this port and communicate with the Jamestown. On opening his instruc, ‘Mons Captain Ogden discoverod that his ehip, together with ‘the Jamestown, was detailed to cruise between Chiriqui Jagoon and the Colorado river, to intercept filibusters, the gbips relieving each other every alternate ten days. On fhe 16:h ult. we hove in sight of the three English ships m the outer harbor of San Juan; the ship accordingly stood in with a beating breeze, to deliver the despatches fntended for the Jamestown. It being our turn to com- mence the cruising, we deemed it unnecessary to anchor, owe stood in tacking about in order to weather the Britieh iner Cesar. A strong curreut and light breeze, however, caused us to pass under the liner’s stern, much; evidently, to their surpriso, inasmuch as the manwuyre ‘was repeated twice, On arriving within half pistol shot ‘ef the Jamestown, she sent a boat on board and we deliy. ered ber instruction: i ed eifected this we filled away and stood out Whatever construction oe Bull placed upon our singu- Jar actions is not precisely known to us; but we perceived ‘tbe liner signalize the two steamers, and they instantly get upsteam, The Diadem out after us until we eleared Point Arenas, when sbe kept away to the south- ward, in the direction of Aspinwall. They evidently sus- ected something from our movements, and were deter- mined toferres itout. Jobu Bull in bese waters is evi- wide awake, being possessed of a species of lynx ‘eyed Vigilance from which nothing escapes of the slightest @ensequence. it must be admitted that our Machiavelism ‘tw generally weil known tw the English, no maiter bow great exertions are made at concealment. We cruised around on our beat for ten days, when wo stood in here and anchored, during which period wo cap- tured nothing pertaining to filibusters. On the evening of ‘the 23d, however, a sail was reported close in by the land. Now, tWought the officers hurrah for Walker! The cir- eamstance being reported to the commander, he forthwith ‘appeared on deck and gave orders to set all gail and keep way for the suspicious looking vessel, reported to be (from the masthead) “a dark looking schooner.” “See Siolear to set tho starboard stoering sails, sir! lay aft the watch to the braces—haul taut—rig out—hoist away!” Ia ‘2 few moments the St. Louis was plunging her bial bows ‘into the secthing foam, in full chase. We were indeed in ap uproar, The decks presented a curious appearance— eflicers, sailors, marines, and the promiscuous assortment a » lame and lazy” which fort no inconsiderable of a man-of-war's complement, came tumbling ‘tmpon deck to catch a glimpse of the “buster.” After a good hour’s chase we came near enough the object to dis- wover that we had made a slight mistake in our reckon- ilibuster schooner which had caused wo be a rock in the shapo been ‘‘sold,”” having found ourselyes in the position of the famous general with the thousand men, who ‘marched them up ‘a bill and marched them down again.” With feelings of we hauled in stun’ sails and braced up on a wind, thoroughly woaried of chasing ‘a bloody rock,’’ as @ foretopman sententiously remarked. ‘The Jamestown is now off on her cruise, which will be ‘on the 9th inst. concluding I would state that the Savannah has ‘Been ordered to Vera Cruz to inquire intoa reported in- sult offered to our fiag by one of her Majesty’s abips of ‘war. The Roanoke is at Aspinwall, and the Saratoga: on ther way there. The Brooklyn has not yet arrived here, though we daily expect her. From her protracted absence that has given out; management are Rot too sanguine but that she has proved ove of those pb otal ‘steam jokes which Uncie Sam occasionally in- ‘Aimicsith Wodragus are, si. dale, quiet; 90 1 close x etter, having given you the latest {ntelligeuce up to tate i ‘The Cruise of the Cyane. OUR NAVAL CORRESPONDENCE. Unrrep Starms Swoop or-War Crane, Bay or Guayaqun, Feb, 20, 1859, } rip of the Oyane from Callao to Guayaquil—General Duty and a General Alarm—Sailing for Panama—Scenery on Bhore—Appearance of the Ladies ~Produce and Pigs. ‘Leaving the city or harbor of Callao on the afternoon of ‘he 14th instant, we arrived at this place on the evening @f yesterday. Our voyage so ‘far has been a very tiro- @ome one, yet not altogether void of interest or excite- ‘ment. ‘The revolution in Chile, together with the war between Peru and Eouador, have caused the Cyane to put in to al- ‘most every port between Valparsiso and Now Granada— ‘most of the ports having been blockaded. Captain Lock- ‘wood thought that our commerce might require come pro- tection, and hence our calling in at Coquimbo, Huasco, Cal- era and Callao; but finding everything quiet aj the above Places, we left, as above, for Guayaquil. The night we anchored off Punar Island, in the bay of Gusyaquil, everything was calm and still; not even the Fipples awoke the stillness of the scene, and the bright, Deavtiful stare reflected their light _on the.calm waters as hough on the face of a mirror. Tho sailors were lazily Jeanging about decks or softly sleeping in their hammocks and all the officers, save the captain and officer of the @eck, had retired. Directly the quick roll ot the drum walled every man to his post, every officer armed, bam- mocks brought up and stowed in the nettings, the guos cast loose and double shotted, ali within the space of tbir- teen minutes. The lookout had espied a war steamer foming down the river, and had given the alarm. On ame the steamer, like ‘some huge monster of the deep, wcarcely rippling ‘the water as she moved along. As ahs ame up the captain hailed with “what steamer is tl which he replied to by asking ‘what ship is that?” mean- img the Cyanne. Captain I, did not answer the question, however, until bis own question was answered. An oflicer came on board from the eteamer to explain that he thought ‘we were a merchant vessel, and came down to warn us off. He seemed rather taken by surprise at sccing our whip ready to receive him—he had not heard our call to quarters. After explaining he left, and the steamer kept onjier course down the bay. There happened to be no American veesels up the river, 80 we hove up anchor and ‘started on our way to Panama, our destined station. Ponar Isiand is one of the several that dot the bay of Guayaquil, and I believe the only one inhabited. It has ‘on it a smail village inhabited by native Indians, who have ‘& dark, sallow complexion, are of medium size and very fond of strangers. The houses are all bailt upon poles, on ‘account of enakes and other reptile, which are hd fer) and very annoying. The houses are one story. The in- habitants sit on the floor or swingin hammocks, The wo- men, some of them, are very good looking, but not pretty; they’are lighter than the men, and fat and plump; they fare evidently fond of the ““Americano’s,” aa they call us. The island wore the most cheering appearance of bey f place I bave seon since leaving the United States. The grass is Jong and beautiful, trees tall and stately, and flowers of ‘every description grow in wild luxuriance, throwing out their sweetness in every direction. Frait grows wild and ip abundance, such as mango apples, cocoanuta and cher- ries; but it was impossible to get anything like meat save a pig, and generally speaking & Spanish pig is not very Pleasing to the “digestibles” of an American, Our Boston Correspondence. Bostox, April 9, 1859. The Post Office Removal Quettiom—What the Mercantile Interest Wants — The Eliot School Troubles, dic. In my last I stated that it was doubtful whether the Post ‘Office would be removed back to State street. This morn- ing the committee met in the rooms of the Board of Trade, and with two exceptions, they were composed either of bank or insurance officers. The result, of this grand conclave (which, be it borne in mind, was strictly private) was ‘2 further appointment of a sub-committee, The enormous sum of $12,600 was enongh to intimidate the bravest of thote public spirited mon who had the interests of Boston 20 Much at heart. What a commentary on our people is this! But what adds more to the meanness of the whole project is ‘the fact that those who have boosted themselves into office ‘by professions of friendship to the present administration should be the first to succumb to the wishes of a more fraction in this city. [till becomes certain men who have faken an active part in this controversy to assume the position they have. Thoir very existence depends upon ‘the favors they have received from the present adminis- tration, to the neglect of those who have ever proved ey tried friends of the democratic party. The cry has been raised of corruption, party cor- raption, the spoils of office, &. Let these same men who are vow 80 untiows to accommo. the people recollect the peat paid to remove the Post Office from the old ‘‘Stave House’’ to the basement of the Merchants’ Exchange building. The democratic party ure not indebted to Boston for their success, and never have been. Bat aside from this, why wore there not placed ‘on this epecial committee men who represented the ditfe. rent commercial interest of Bostant Why ssloct men who might, from their personal conveniences aad private conside sao, be influenced in favor of carrying the Port Office to its old subterranean quarters? Your correspondent is familiar with a large proportion of the mercantile interests of Boston, and boldly aseerts, without fear of contradiction, that outside of those merely interested in ren! estate in State street, there will be found ‘ut few who oppore the present location, and Rroat credit to several Boston editors for the independent stand have taken in this matter. The demooratic party, ‘we acknowlodge, is small here, but the small remnan left is true to the administration, and we trust that istration will not forsake them on account of pe ralsed by the recent converts troubles ® g SEF EE have given rise to mauy indig- called out from our ga vermons to do more harm po If oor je" matained equal sone must be arigos om roa political mo. Our Kansas Correspondence. Lacoxrto, K, f., March 29, 1859. The Constitution Lction—The Pike's Peak Gold Fever— Highway Rebbers, &e., de. ‘The election on the Constitution took place yesterday. The day being very stormy, but a small vote was cast. It commenced raining carly ia the morning, which goon changed to snow, which fell very fast during the day. I don’t think half the legal voters in the Territory went to the polis. In this (Lecompton) township there were 7 votes for a conetitution and 121 against it, in Law- rence 125 for and 35 against. At one precinct in Jefferson county there were 82 against and 12 for #; at Atchison 180 for and 2 against, Idon’t think there will be 6,000 votes polled throughout the Territory, from what 1 have been able to learn. It is reported in town to-day that a party of Piko’s Peak emigrants had been attacked on the Plains and rob bed by a band of highway robbers, This is the first in- stance of the kind that has occurred, but it will probably not be the last; for the Pike’s Peak emigration will soon furnish @ rich feld for the operations of ‘and pirates.’ Many a poor fellow will leave for Pike’s Peak with a cheerful heart, but soon to be robbed by some highway robher. The'reports from the go'd mines are not very flattering of late. A letter from there a few days ago represented considerable suffering among the miners, and repreaents that many will leave there in the spring. The same writer says that a few are making from fifty cents to two dollars & day; but a great many more are making no- thing, and none make it pay. The present season will either prove the country a humbug or that gold abounds toagreat extent. Notwitbstandiog the bad reports from there, many are getting ready to go. T understand from good authority that a party left Leavenworth, or passed through, some days since, consisting of six able bodied men, pone lees than six feet high, barnessed to # light wagon, drawing it, in the place of horses, and one man followed with nothing but a wheelbarrow. I should con- sider this a slow way of getting to Pike’s Peak; but maay, Texpect, will find that they will get there too soon, even travelling with a wheelbarrow. : ‘The jury in the case of Dr Day, now on trial in St. Joseph for running off negroes, I have just learned could not agree. The sales embrace some of the choicest lanes in those territories, a large portion of which has been held back, ‘because of the late financial pressure, for nearly a year later than would otherwise have been the case. _ SITUATIONS WANTED—FEMALES.
