ur Kansas Correspondence. Lacomrrow, K. T., March 29, 1859. ‘The Constitution lection—The Pike's Peak Gold Fever— Highway Rethers, dc., Be. ‘The election on the Constitution took piace yesterday. The day being very stormy, but a small vote was cast. It commenced raining carly in the morning, which soon changed to snow, which fell very fast during the day. I don’t think half the legal voters in the Territory went to the polis. In this (lecompton) township there were 7 votes for a constitution and 121 egainst it, in Law- rence 125 for and 35 against. At ove precinct in Jefferson county there were 82 against and 12 for; at Atchison 180 for and 2 against, Idon’t think there will be 6,000 votes polled throughout the Territory, from what 1 have been able to learn. It is reported in town to-day that a party of Piko’s Peak emigrants bad been attacked on the Plains and rob bed by a band of highway robbers. This is the first in- stance of the kind that has occurred, but it will probably not be the last: for the Pike’s Peak émigration will soon furnish a rich feld for the operations of “and pirates.” Many a poor fellow will leave for Pike’s Peak with a cheerful beart, but soon to be robbed by some highway robher. ‘The’reports from the go'd mines are not very tagpering: of late, A letter from there a few days ago represented considerable suffering among tbe miners, and represents that many will leave there in the spring. The sme 8 that a few are making from fifty cents to two dollars @ ¢ay; Dut a great many more are making no- thing, and none make it pay. The present season will f prove the country a humbug or that gold abounds toagreat extent. Notwithstanding the bad reports from there, many are getting ready to go. understand from good authority that 9 party left Leavenworth, or passed through, some days since, consisting of six able bodied men, none less than six feet high, barnessed to a light wagon, drawing it, in the place of horses, aud one man followed with nothing but a wheelbarrow. I should cou- sider this a slow way of getting to Pike’s Peak; but maay, I expect, will find that they will get there too soon, even travelling with a wheelbarrow. ‘The jury in the case of Dr Day, now on trial in St. Joseph for running off negroes, I have just learned could not agree. Immediately on the arrival of the mail steamer Illinois at Aspinwall, on the 13th ult., the Flag Oflicer sent orders 40 our Commander to proceed immediately to this port and communicate with the Jamestown. On opening his instruc, tions Captain Ogden discovered that his ship, together with ‘he Jamestown, was detailed to cruise between Chiriqui Ingoon and the Colorado river, to intercept filibusters, the ships relieving each other every alternate ten days. On the 16th ult. we hove in sight of the three English ships gm the outer harbor of San Juan; the ship accordingly stood in with a beating breeze, to deliver the despatches intended for the Jamestown. It being our turn to com- mence the cruising, we deemed it unnecessary to anchor, po we stood in tacking about in order to weather the Britieh iner Cesar. A strong current and light breeze, however, caused us to pass under the liner’s stern, much, evidently, to their surprise, inasmuch as the manwuyre was repeated tw On arriving within half pistol shot ‘ef the Jamestown, she sent a boat on board and we deliv ered ber instructions, Having effected this we filled away and stood out seaward Whatever construction John Bull placed upon our singu- Jar actions is not precisely known to us; but we perceived the hiner signalize the two steamers, and they instantly The Diadem out after us until we joint Arenas, when sbe kept away to the south- ward, i the direction of Aspinwall, They evidently eu pected romething from our movements, and were deter- mined to ferret itout. Jobu Bull in phese waters is evi- dently wide awake, being possessed of a species of lynx eyed vigilance from which nothing escapes of the slightest @eusequence. it must be admitted that our Machiavelism iw generally well known to the English, no maiter how great exertions are made at concealment.” We cruised around on our beat for ten days, when wo stood in here aud anchored, during which period we cap- tured nothing pertaining to filibusters. On the evening of ‘the 23d, however, a sail was reported close in by the land. Now, thought the officers, hurrah for Walker ! The cir- eumstance being reported. tothe commander, he forthwith ared on deck aud gave orders to set all gail and keep away forthe suspicious looking vessel, reported to be (from the masthead) “‘a dark leoking schooner.” “See all clear to set tho starboard steering suils, sir! lay aft the watch to the braces—naul taut—rig out—hoist away!” Io ‘a few moments the St. Lou's was plunging her blu! bows into the seething foam, in full chase. We were indeed in aa uproar. The decks Presented a curious appearance— eficers, sailors, marines, and the promiscuous assortment @f “sick, lame and lazy’ which form? no inconsiderable portion of a man-of-war’s complement, came tumbling pon deck to catch a glimpse of the “buster.” After a good hour’s chase we came near enough the object to dis- over that we bad made a alight mistake in our reckon- fmg—the supposed filibuster schooner which had caused ‘tais mighty commotion proving to be a rock in the shapo ‘@f a truncated cone. We had evidently been “sold,” having found ourselyes in the position of the famous pai with the thousand men, who “marched them up 8 bill and marched them down “again.” With feelings of Taortification we hauled in stun’ gails and braced up on a wind, thoroughly wearied of chasing ‘‘a bloody rock,” as ® forétopman sententiousty remarked. War Cranz, Bay or Guayaqut., Feb, 20, 1859, rt rip of the Cyane from Callao to Guayaquil—General Duty and a General Alarm—Sailing for Panama—Scenery on SBhore—Appearance of the Ladies —Produce and Pigs, Leaving the city or harbor of Callao on the afternoon of he 14th instant, we arrived at this place on the evening ef yesterday, Our voyage so far has been a very tire- ome one, yet not altogether void of interest or excite- ment. ‘The revolution in Chile, together with the war between Peru and Ecuador, have caused the Cyane to put in to al- ‘most every port between Valparaiso and Now Granada— ‘most of the ports having been blockaded. Captain Lock- ‘wood thought that our commerce might require gome pro. ‘tection, and hence our calling in at Coquimbo, Huasco, Cal- @era and Callao; but finding everything quiet af the above places, we left, as above, for Guayaquil. The night we anchored off Punar Island, in the bay of Guayaquil, everything was calm and still; not even the ripples awoke the stillness of the ecene, and the bright, Deavtiful stare reflected their light on the.calm waters as though on the face of a mirror. The sailors were lazily Jouning about decks or softly sleeping in their hammocks ‘and ali the officers, save the captain and officer of the deck, had retired, ‘Directly the quick roll ot the drum called every man to his post, every officer armed, ba: mocks brought up and stowed in the nottings, the guns cast loose and double shotted, ali within the space of thir- teen minutes, The lookout had espied a war steamer coming down the river, and had given the alarm. On ame the steamer, like ‘some huge monster of the deep, ncarcely rippling ‘the water as she moved along. As ahs came up the captain hailed with ‘‘what steamer is that?’ which was replied to by asking ‘‘what ahip is that?’ mean- ing the Cyanne. Captain L, did not anewer the question, however, untij his own question was answered. An officer came on board from the steamer to explain that he thought we were a merchant vessel, and came down to warn us Off. He seemed rather taken by surprise at sceing our Ship ready to receive him—he had not heard our call to quarters. After explaining he left, and the steamer kept ‘onjfer course down the bay. There happened to be no American vessels up the river, 80 we hove up anchor and started on our way to Panama, our destined station. Punar Island is one of the several that dot the bay of Gaayaquil, and I believe the only one inhabited. It has ‘on it a smail village inhabited by native Indians, who have ‘& dark, sallow complexion, are of medium size and very fond of strangers. The houses are all bailt upon poles, on ‘account of snakes and other reptilee, which are very plenty ‘and very annoying. The houses are one story. The in- habitants sit on the floor or swingin hammocks, The wo- men, some of them, are very good looking, but not pretty; they are lighter than the men, and fat and plump; they fare evidently fond of the “Americano” 's,”? aa they call us. The island wore the most cheering appearance of any place T bave seen since leaving the United States. The grase is tong and beautiful, trees tall and stately, and flowers of every deecription grow in wild luxuriance, throwing out their sweetness in every direction. Frait grows wild and ip abundance, such as mango apples, cocoanuta and cher- ries; but it was impossible to get anything like meat save a pig, and generally speaking a Spanish pig is not very Pleasing to the ‘‘digestibles”’ of an American, SITUATION WANTED—BY A RESPECTABLE YOUNG woman, to do berwork and fine washing and iron- ‘ing; has the best of city reference. all at 84 7th street.
