Expected Attach on the Comptroller's Office. Late last evening a despatch was received at the head- of Ube Metropolitan Police, from the Fourth ward precinct, that in the event of the election of Mr. Haws, the pepubiican candidate for Comptroller, it was in contempla- @on by certain parties in that quarter of the city to raiso ‘a mob and attack the Hall of Records, for the purpose of destroying the documents and papers contained in the @omptroiier’s oftice. Rumors of a similar character had also reached the police authorities at an earlier hour of ‘the day, which, together with the last despatch, induced force, Ba og ps mide, to guard Une building. Up to two o’clocit last night nothing had oc- eurred to corroborate the story, and all was quiet in and wround the Park. Another Sparring Exhibition. BOXING TO A SMALL COMPANY—THE FANCY AT THE ELECTIONS, ETC. Mr. John Hamilton, alias Shepherd, the trainer of the ehampions of England and America—Sayers and Morris- wey—gave a sparring exhibition in Hoym’s theatre, Bowery, on Monday evening. Comparatively a stranger im New York, Mr. HL, unfortunately for his pocket, chose ‘a very improper evening for his benefit—the eve of the election. The Hxrarp has repeatedly drawn attention to ‘the governing influence of the fancy at the polls, The empty benches at Hoym’s theatre on Monday evening," the universal reason assigned by the fancy present or the fancy absent demonstrates the truth of the affirma- tion. From the dirst intimation of Harilton’s benetit the fancy counted on a “splendid display of science,” aud were eager for the appointed hour; but when the bills an- nounced the time—the eve of the election—the excitement simmered down to almost entire forgetfulness, and the yeenlt was the eplendid sparring anticipated to “a mise- rable account of empty benches.’’ Poor Hamilton was accosted by numerous friends abont the unfortunate ‘hoosing of Monday evening. Every one had it that he should have known better—but he heme] guilty to igno- rance—he was a stranger. They opened up to his under manding, when too late for his profit, that it was a large betting bight, and one in which much pressing pa trictism was expected from the fancy. One of the “upper ten” ‘of the tistic fraternity said in demonstra- tion of his information, that he had seen $2,000 tabled in the space of half an hour before comi gv the exhib'- tion, and, as our reporter picked up, large and hi ting marked the character of the election of One unfortunate gentleman lost no less than $1,100, on the State elections; nevertheless, he was booked again on (he charter elections.
