[PRFERRED ARTICLES. Taz ALEUQUBRQUE AND CoLornapo MuL1. rary Wacox Roap.—A long and interesting scoount of the sufferings of a party of emi- grants from Missouri to Southern California by the route explored in 1857 by Lieut. Beale, is contained in a letter from Albuquerque’ New Mexico, under date of October 28th, by L. J. Rose, one of a party of emigrants. It boars the impress of truth, and no better ar- gument is required to show the wisdom of the eGicient Chief of the War Department in estab- lishing military posts on the routes most fre- quented by emigrants; and in order fo secure them still more effectually from molestation, to seek and punish the ruthless savages when- ever they are to be found. These savages can hardly be brought to regard treaty obliga- tions, which they assume, for the most part, with a view to secure presents, in the shape of blankets, tobacco, paint, de., te. They sel- dom respect anything but the strong band of power. Rose’s party was beset when it reached the Colorado, which journey had been performed with great toil and considerable loss of stock, by the Mojaves, a powerful tribe inhabiting both banks of that stream. Nearly all their animals were run off, several of the party killed, (among whom was a young lady,) and many wounded. They determined to re- trace their steps to Albuqierque, N. M., though they were only ten or twelve days journey from California, whither they were bound. Their sufferings on the return trip, from want of conveyance for their wives and little ones, from hunger and thirst, and from constant alarms from the Indians, were excessive. They eveasionally met parties of emigrants trom whom they obtained assistance, and they were received with every kindness at Albuquerque, They lost every thing they possessed, however. having been obliged to leave their wagons with their contents on the road, to be plun- dered by the Indians Awilitary post at the crossing of the Colorado is, we believe, contemplated by the War De- partment, if, indeed, orders have not already been sent to establish it. It is more needed there than at any other point on the route, as the rafting acroes that river is necessarily at tended with difficulty, which the Mojaves, who are bold and insolent, never fail to il of to indulge their thirst for blood and murder. A horse ferry boat is required there, and it can only be protected by a permanent post. The country around is suitable for settlement, and as there is a constant tide of emigration passing that point, a sufficient population will soon collect to protect itself, in a great measure. The military wagon road now in course of construction by that energetic officer, Lieut. Beale, crosses the Colorado at this place, and, as soon as it is completed, the travel over it will most likely be enormous, as it possesses advantages over all other routes. In this connection, we will mention that we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Henry Buch- anan Edwards, Lieut. Beale’s first assistant, on Friday last, on his way to Chester, Va. He had just arrived by express from Beale’s camp, at Choutean’s old fort, on the Canadian river, 230 miles south of Fort Smith, and gives a very favorable report of the progress of the expedi- tion. He contradicts the story of its having been attacked by Camanches. Beale was some- what in advance of his escort, which would soon overtake him, but had not been molested. He did not intend to go into winter quarters, but expected to complete the road as far as Albu- querque in time to commence the second sec- tion, from Albuquerque to the crossing of the Colorado, early next spring. When that is done, we shall have a route opened to Califor- nia shorter, and better adapted to travel, than any other. Pension Urrice.—It appears from the re- port of the Commissioner of Pensions that the business of his Bureau is now up to date in all its branches, and that a material reduction of ita clerical force will soon become nece:sary. Daring the past year 209 army invalid pen- sioners have been added to the rolls, the aggre- gate of whose yearly stipends is $15,775—that the allowances of 35 have been increased in the turther sum of $1,356, and that the whole num- ber of pensioners of this class now on the rolls in all the States is 4.916, requiring the annual sum of $446,455.93. Theclaims of 11 surviving Revolutionary soldiers have been allowed, and » have bad their stipends increased. 152 claims have been allowed to widows of Revolutionary soldiers for the aggregate annual sum of 5.354 06; and 39 bave had their pensions in- creased in thefurtber sum of $2,070.35 per annum. The number of Revolutionary soldiers yet alive and drawing pensions is 253, and the number of widows of deceased Revolutionary soldiers is 4,209. The annual awount required the former is $14,734.29, and for the latter $4,450.55. The number of Revolutionary soldiers whose deaths have been reported during the year is 104, and of the widows 624; 187 claims have Leen allowed to widows and or- pbans of the Army, whose yearly pensions amount to $13,924. The whole number of this class now on the rolls is 1.345, and their pen- sions ameunt to $107,029 22 per annum The whole number of Army peusioners now on the rolls, under all the acts, is 10,723, and the sum of their stipends is $902,700.29. Thirty claims have been allowed to invalids of the Navy, re- qairing $1,455.50 per annum, and 32 te the widows and orphans of deceased Naval officers, 4&c., requiring the annual sum of $6,496. The whole number of Navy pensioners now on the rolls is 892, whose pensions amount to the ag- gregate sum of $130,501.10 per annum. The entire amount paid during the year ending 30th June, 1858, for Army and Navy pensions, ex- elusive of the balf-pay pension claims adjudi- cated by the Third Auditor of the Treasury, and of what are termed ‘unclaimed pensions,”’ was $1,150,369.95. Under the act of June 3d, 1853, renewing and continuing for life, or during widowhood, the half-pay pensions pre- viously granted to certain widows and orphans for the limited period of five years, 541 claims have been allowed, involving the immediate payment of $46,631.15, and $44,087 annually thereafter. The whole number of claims to be allowed under this act iz estimated to be not less than 3,000 The report asserts @ saving to the Treasury of $118,670 20, during the past year, as the re- sult of the Secretary's decision to discontinue the practice (pronounced by the Attorney Gen- eral to be illegal) of paying to the children of deceased Revolutionary soldiers, and of their widows, the pensions they might have drawn, but did not claim during their lifetime.
