Besumé of the Session—Extinction of the Lobby—The Op- pontion—The Senate and the House—Prestdential Aspi- rants, de. Another such session as that which has just closed and ‘the lobby system in Congress is annihilated. Just think Of it, not a solitary railroad grant! Not s single patent ‘extensicn! Not ono new mail steamer gratuity voted! Not one book ordered to be printed for the use of Con} gress! Nothing but desolation and blank dismay stering ‘out of the eyes of the few vultures and cormorants who Temained there to the last in the hopes of « little bit of a windfall in the ¢ losing honrs of the session. But no ‘windfall came, and, with lank carpet bags and long drawn faces, they at length yielded to destiny and helped to Swell the ranks of the retreating army from this now de- eerted city. If the first session of Congress ander the edministra. tion of Mr. Buchanan were remembered in aftor year for nothing else than for the annihilation of the oorrup and ocorrapting system of lobby agescy, tha singio event wili make it remomberod, for i 4s to be hoped that it has iosugurated an era o public bonesty and Congressional respectabuity. Even though Matteson was allowod to retain bis seat, aad drew bis psy, and record his vote, still the poison of bis contact was rendered harmiers by the recollection of his fue; acd even he eeemed to have forgotten the cavving Of his art, or at least, bo thoaght it the part of wisdom and prudence te abaadon its practice. And so, with th exception of one Little job of $380,000 for the beneil; of Gales & Seaten, of the National Intelligencer, with proba diy a sbaretherein for Wendell, the public printer, there ‘was Bota single matter of legislation out of which the ‘vultures of the loboy could possibly hope to have any Tho causes of this wonderful and most desirable change ‘wore manifold. The administration was known to be de- terminedly hostile to the corrupt association of publi pluaderers; the treasury was depleted, and economy was imposed by absolute nocessity. The Speaker. Col. Orr, had learned all the hidden springs and sources of the or ganization white he was chairman of the Investigating Committee with Cornich, Matteson and Fellows, and knew ‘how to guard against it, The now hall of the House of Representatives was #0 Cevined as to sbut ont all outsiders from personal commu- nion with members during the hours of business, and thore bad grown up a readiness to raise committees of investigation on the slightest protonces, which of itacif acted as a wholesome terror. All these causes, and per- aps others, combined to produce # result at which the country bag reason to rejoice. Im taking a comprehensive view of the results of the Seesion it will be seen that aside from the contempti die squabbie over the imagivary political rights of « handful of border ruffians and abolitioniata {a Kaosas, no legisia- tive act of any importance or interest to the nation was passed. The business of the seesion was of s practical character, to provide ways and moans for the carrying ciency. ‘opposition vide of the House showed itself most willing and ready to co-operate with the administration side. ‘There was no factious opposition manifested from tho first ¢o the last day of the seasion—no parliamentary dodges resorted to to defeat or carry measures—but overything ‘ag Gone and met in a fair and straightforward meoner. ‘The only obstacles that were interposed to the passage of the necessary and ordinary Appropriation bills, came not from the republican, but from the democratic side of the Fiouse; and indeed it has been a matter of remark thas if the republicans had interposed factious objections to ‘the transaction of business, the regular Appropriation bilis could not bave been passed, It is but fair to give the devil bis due, and in that spiri} I compliment the repab. Ucans im the House for the course they havo feon fit to pursue. An instance of this liberality on ‘their part was the fact of « republican momber from Michigan (Mr. Howard) moving, when the fifteen million Joan bill was under consideration, to amend tha bill by in- creasing the amount to thirty millions; and that amend- ment was carried in committes, although subsequently: Jost in the House, in consequence of ite having been found of to resort to the evinme' sy ex Eitent of inoene strike out the claune—the effect of which ta to bring « bill back foto the louse stripped of ail ite amendments. As it is not probable tbat Miss Curbman will play again in this coun- try for several years, end it may be not at all,a brief review of ber career may not be out of place. Miss Cusbman was born at Beeston of old Puritan stock, from which she undoubtedly derives mush of her proverbial firmness end decision of character. Her Parepts were not wenlthy, end Mies Charlotte having & good voice end fine artistio perception, ro folved to edopt the profession of a public singer. After Cue preparation he made ber dibut at the Tremont thesire (April, 1835), aa the Countess Almaviva in “The Marri+ge of Figaro.” She wos successful, and was soon after engeged at New Orleans. Here her voice, which was a contralto, was seriously impaired by an endeavor to force it up to the soprano register. This accident gave us one of the floest sotrecses the world bas seen. It will be remembered that Rache! also commenced her carcer ee 8 singer. Miss Cushman returned to Now Work, end war cpgaged first at the Bowery and afterwards at the Park as leading actress. She played iso at Philadelphia. So passed tho first ten years of ber professional life in the toils, trials, cars, troubles and dieaprointments incident to the life of a stock actress. ‘We are sorry to say that Miss Ousbman was obliged to go abroad before she could be recogeized at home. She veiled for Engiazd im 1845, and im the same year made her first appearance at the Princess’ theatre, Tondon, as Bianca in “Fazio.” Her success was im- mediate ond thorough. In “Bianca,” “lady Mao- beth,” “Romeo,” “Meg Merrilies,”” “Queen Kathe- rine,” Ac., &c., she achieved such « series of triumphs as has been accorded to uo other American artist in Fog- land. Miss Cushman d:viced the honors with Mr. Macrea- Gy, then in the genith of bis fame. After three or four years ecjourn in England Miss Qusbman returned to the United States, where she renewed ber triomphs. With the Epgiish endorsement she was at once placed in the highest position, Pecuniarily speaking, 00 atar except Mr. Forrest bis been eo attractive in the United States ag Miss Cushman. After some years sojourn in Europe she egain returned to the United States in the eutumn of inst year, and, in spite of the financial crisis, bes piayed to crowded houses wherever she Das appeared. fhe is now on the point of again visiting Europe, ead intends to reside for some time in Italy. It is barcly necessary to epter into a critical analysis o@Miss Cushmen’s acting. Her forte \s the dolineation of the contests of the grand passions—love, jealousy, hatred and revenge. She hes the the most acute artistic perception, ‘@ thorough knowlecge of buman nature, and great phys! cal and mental power. No one can witness her calm dig- pity as Queen Katherine; ber insatiate ambition and sad repentance as lady Macbeth: ber splondid delineation of the half crazed Gipsy Mog, without according to her also the rare gift of genius, All Americans should be proud of Miss Cushman. In her courage, energy, vigor apd perseverance she is a thorough representative of the spirit of our people. Her (grenty three years’ experience on the boards has given her fame and fortune, and her estimable private charac ter and agreeable masners have gained for her the enirie of the best society at home and abroad. We often hear of self msde men, Miss Cushman is aselfanade woman, and a model one at that. We ere giad to hear that Mies Cushman’s farewell will be made a great event im the his- tory of the American stage. Mr. H. ©.
