XI. ee oa THE CHESS PLAYER. _ 4 correspondent of ihe Boston Journal, wri- ting ee Chicago, box a of the unparaltcled obeas feat recen a out in that city b: Mr. Paulsen, as follows: = he most stupendous achievement in chess the world ever saw has just been successfully performed in this city, and Louis Paulsea now stand? peerless. On Monday evening he com- mev.ced playing blindfolded ten simultaneous ames against Chicago. His opponents were carefully selected from among tho most skillfal Players of the Chess Club, who used every ex- ertion to checkm.te theit gallant artaganist, Mr. Paulsen sat apart from cvery one on stage of Light (iuard Hall, with his back t the ten boards, Two gentlemen of this city acted as tellers and circula ed among the play- ers, calling aloud each move on the different tables, which were designated by their respec- tive numbers from one to tev. Mr. Paulven would reflect a few moments, and then without apparent effort sunounce his own move in re- turn. His attitude and bearing were like those of a person in a trance. His head thrown slightly forward, his eyes closed, his figure mo- tioules 5, and nothing to indicate life save an veeasional working of the face when a skilful step was taken by an adversary or a sudden coup de buttaille contemplated by himself, The progress was slow, of course slow. At the clore of the first evemmg; however, enough of his surprising ability.was displayed to make even the most experi¢nced of bis opponents fee! Nervous, evening his advantage over several was clearly to be seen. The spectators became mmch ex- cited, but the sympathies of those who had no triends playing, were piainly given to that sin- gle, silent man, thus bitted. against a host of foes. Mr. Paulsen could at any time recapitulate the precise position of each piece upon every board, acd when an occasional difference arose concerning some disarrangement which be de- tected, his assertions had in all cases proved correct, while these who had their eyes open were forced to acknowledge their error. It was evident that his astonishing memory and eencentration enabled him to recall at will each move from the first upon either board, and thus bring it as clearly to its mind's eye as if it were bodily hefore him. The third evening was expected to finish this unprecedented feat. The audience was on tip toc with excitement, and every one ccemed unewmtrotiably worked Up, exeept be upon whom: all intorest centered. he selt-command exercised appeared miracu Jous, and nene would have suspected what an antense, powerful stretch mast have been upon that singnilar brain. mly he sat, as if cxst- ing #mo problem in ple interest, rather = performing # Inbor of horculean magni- tude Throughout he was subjected to one unfair- nea, which, however, serves now to heighten his glory. Not only did be play against ten opponents, but fitty—as by a strange Neense, a few of the audience were allowed to mingle with the players, and at each table two or three deeply versed in chess, seated themselves to advise thuse whom Mr. Paulsen's brillia tacks had discomfitted. He thus battled the combined strength of the entire city op- posing him. Every player, too, expected him fo make the assault, while their chief effort was fortify « position so as to he impregnable. At Ll p. m. game nine Zesigned, tn fifteen Tinates game five did likewise, and game two was drawn at its player's request. Mr. Paul- sen then made some dashing, <plendid attacks upon the rest. and might, doubtless, have fin- ished there, but the midnight hour interrupted. fle agreed te continue, but all thought best to wdjourn, and give those who wished an oppor- tunity to play out at the Club room on the uext evenin, Mr. Peulsen rose quickly when this decision was announced, seemingly not jaded in the least. He is an ordinary lickiog man, with a decidedly German east of features, and nothing but # singularly broad head toindicate uncom- won powers. The games were finally finished last eveniag—Mr. Paulsen beating five of the remaiming seven and consented to draw the other two, though he might haye won even them, as their players were losing coolness. Ten games blindfolded is without a parallel Mr. Morphy never attempted but seven, and thus is outdone. The whole city is filled with wonder. The victor is decidedly a lion of con- siderable altitude, and his achievement cannot probably be excelled under equally trying circumstances. Mrs. Hewaxs.—{n the following passsgq from Miss Jewsbury’s “ Tnree Histories,’ she avowedly descriles Mra. Hemans : Sgeria was totally different from any other woman | had ever seen, cither in Italy or Eng- land. She did not dazzle—she subdued me. Other women might be more commanding, more versatile, more acute, but [ never saw one 30 qranidiialy fomining. Mer birth, her education, but abort sl!, the genius with which she was gifted, combined to inspire a passion for the ethe- real, the tender, the imaginative, the beroic— inone word, the beautiful. It was in her facul- ty divine, and yet of daily life; it tonched all things, but, like a sunbeam, touched them with 4 golden finger. Anything abstract or scientific was unintelli- gible or distasteful to her. Her knowledze was extensive and various; but true to the first Prineiple of her nature, it was poetry that she sought in history, seonery, eharacter and reli- gious belief—poctry that guided all her studies. governed all ber ughts, culored all her i: aginative conversation. Her nature was at ence simple and profound ; there wasnoroom in her mind for philosophy. nor in her heart for ambition. The one was filled by imagination, the othor engrosred by tendorneas. She had a passive temper, but decided tastes; any one might infuence, but very few impressed her. Her strength and her reaknoss lay alike in her affections; these would zometimes make her weep, at others imbue her with courage ; so that she was alternately a “ falcon-hearted dove.” and a ~ reed broken with the wind’ Her voice was a sweet sad melody, and ber spirits reminded me of an old poet’s descrip- tion of the orange tree with its “Golden lamps, hid in a night of green,”” or of those Spanish gardens where the pome- gravate blossoms beside thecyprese. Her glad- ness was like a burst of sanlight ; and if in her sadness she resembled night, it was night wearing stars. I might describe and describe forever, but I should never succeed in potray- ing Egeria. She was a Muse, aGrace, a varia- bie child, a dependent woman, the Italy of human beings. A Pisn Stony:—The Nashville Union is re- sponsibte for the following: When over in East Tennessee lately, (ieorge Harris told us a story which we don't belie: It ran thus: A man in Greene county fond of whisky. He went to the atill house in his neighhorhood, and had his jug filied with the critter. Between his residence and the still-houze a mill-pond ** intervened ;"’ which, ofcourse, he had to cross. Before reaching the pond, he had exhausted the J's. and was.—well, svy.tight, He heldon to the jug. however. In come pond, ho fell in, jug and all. He gotvut, but the jug sank to the pond. im course of time the man joined the teuperance society. One day he went to thie same pond to fish. Soon he found, his hook fast After much effort, he drew the attach- ment to shore and it was Aisgug! Wondertal to tell, his hook was fast inside the jug! He couldn't get it out. and so broke the jug. Suli wore wonderful to tell. a ezt-fish filled tye jag. George Harris thinks that the cat-fish had entered the jug and could not get out. He grew till he filfed the jug, and w its @xact shape, square stern and all! © told Marris that we didn’t believe this story, and heoffered to produce the breken pieces uf the jug, provided we would go with him toGreane county ; which we declined. ee 7" Wm #1.
