N Creans of the Politicians Canght with thetr Hand in tne Lobby. [From the Washiogwo Union Jan. 6) 00 *GRBSSMEN CHARGED WITH CORRUPTION. We do not know the origi of the old saw—' sot @ Logue to cateh a rogue’’— but we do know that, if there is any trath in the New York Heavy and ‘the New York Times, toe saw is being most forcibly Hhastastes by these two jou:nals at the present time. The Hex acdand Times tvrough their correspondents and their editorials, are vieiog with each , ina wild hunt after a band of plunderers and rogues which they say is now infesting Congress, and iay- ing schemes tw bribe dishonest and seduce honest members into most enormous appropriations of the public veld and the publi; lands. If one tithe of whet they charge be (rue, the very atmosphere of is reekiog with corruption, and the sr ot Congress little eise than dens of official , Meeting together only to divide the misfortune, however, is, that the charges fail command credence because the witaesses have each other to be as great rogues aud en as they assert the lob; agents to be It has been the daily occupation of these two journals to hant and pile up evidence of villainy againet each other, and, if there is a lingering “doubt in the wer a sor one that they are w pair of unmitiga- scapegra’es, that donbt must hang upon the beief that neither of them is a credible witness. @l isara: pectacle to cee two such prosecutors ¢ ming forward to “ turn States’s eviuence” against public plunderers. There may be, aud we fear there 18, room for suspicion that the legislation of Con- gress is being sometimes ede available tor the ad- ane of ogee rsonal and private schemes of ag- grandizement; but we doubt mach whether those who are guilty i in the premises have not their surest against detection and punishment in the that the prosecutors can get no one to believe their testimony on account of the notorious infamy of the witnes-es There is a conse: pane, how- ver, which may fallon these repeate of corruption, which might be well nomsidered by the parties implicated. An incredibie witness may re- peat his testimony so often that it may finally gene- rate suspicion of guilt, which is almoat as fatal to a public man as proof of the fact, Cape if the charges are allowed to be repeate and agaio without refutation or couradttion Sy the oe accused. For example, the editor the Times, who was the fenaut Governor of New York, says in his issue of Jan. 6:— We know pe L) oorrupt on of members of has ex. ‘e are well & balance of power to kill or oarry any measure pepding in the House o! Representatives, and ‘that its power has been cxerted in favor of measures where ita price ($,000 per vote generally, oF its equiva pn ‘Was agrees 0; and ius’ it has been used to pre- worable action on equally meritorious measures shen wore unabie or unwiiiing ¢) Sumit 10 the piratical R.. is a direct charge, and the editor professes to its truth, Taking inco view the fact that ‘an editor of the HERALD oas again and again proved that the author of the charge is just as infa- mous 8s a witness as himself, the charge woald hard- ly be enflicient to raise a suspicion of guilt; but sup- pose the charge is repeated duy after day in the same confidevt and defiant tune, and none of tae im- plicated parties contront the accuser and repel his its. The natural consequence would be that there were grounds for suspicion, which would soon ripen into conviciion of guilt. Who the parties are tout are thus implicated we neither know nor conjecture. The Times makes one remark, however, which wduces us to add another word of comment. That remark is this:— ‘This organization is con 4oe. to no party, bat embraces members of them all—'r it is a singular aad nowrious fact that, while patr) (ism cansot rise anove partizaa goa. sicerations, villainy oxo According to this allegation, there are democrats implicated in this iofamons charge. It is neither our business nor »ur wish to allude to those of the other parties implicated. We hope for the honor of the nation, that ncne are guilty; but so far as democrats are concerned, we are iuterested to know what toandation there is for so gross a charge, and one which we believe to be a vile calumny. If black republicans and Know Nothings choose to remain silent under such an imputation made by a leading black republican organ, we insist that democrats shall not allow their party to be involved in such a dishonorable associattion of corruption and crime. If there be any one calling himseif a democrat who is guilty, let him be known, aud ve hesitate not to say that be will be promptly sc onted from our ranks by the united voice of the party. Bat, after all, we cannot covelude without calling to mind the fact thut the Hexaup aad the Times, the foremost in charging corruption on others, and equal- ly earnest in charging it on each other, constitute two of that famone quintuple alliance which combined together to piace the goverument under black republican rule. If there is truth in the charges of corruption made by thea: we have no doubt that exposure will fall on thore who co-operated with them in the Presidential election What acom- mentary, then, have we on black republicanism ! What genx have been the limits to corruption and government had passed into their der it'it be tree that ear thin as the Heraup and oTianee now charge are true’ What abandant cause has the country to rejoice that it has escaped the dominion of the quintuple alliauce ? But we have no wish to revive toe discussion of matters that entered into the late canvass. The democrats have the responsibility of the government on their shoulders, and we are chiefly concerned that they shall not be implicated in an infamous com- bination with black republicans and Know Nothings for of plunder. We believe the charge to pod iy ‘else; and in this declaration we ex- be sustained e de ocratin Congress. Ran wo Ae Koow Nothings im- plicated, we h we m to say, except that we shall be if they too shall Ax the brand ‘of falsebood apon the charge so fur as it attaches to them.
