9° NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, JANUARY li, 1857. Croans ot the Polttictans ; inane with thetr Hand in tne Lobby. [From the Washiogioo Union, Jan. 6} ©0 *GRESSMEN CHARGED WITH CORRUPTION. We do not kuow the origi of the old saw—* sot # Logue to cated a rogue’’— but we do know that, if there is any truth in the New York Henaup and ‘the New York Times, toe saw is being most forcibly gmp by these two journals at the present time. The Hex acy and Times iurough their correspondents and their editorials, are vieing with each other, in a wild hunt after a band of planderers and rogues which they say is now infesting Congress, and lay- ing schemes to bribe dishoness and seduce honest members into most enormous eppreprasions. of the public Beeey and the publi: lands. If one tithe of what they charge be «rue, the very atmosphere of fon is reeking with corruption, and the mie oft Congress little eise than dens of official . meeting together only to divide the misfortune, however, is, that the charges fail to command crejence because the Witaeases have proved each other to be as great rogues aud plun- they assert the pony agentatobe. It has been the daily occupation of these two journals to hant and pile up evidence of villainy against each other, and, if there is a lingering doubt in the of apy one that thy are a pair of unmitiga- ted scapegraces, that doubt must hang upon the beief that neither of them is a credible Bos rar spetac otacle to see two such prosecutors Cc ming fant yi “ turn States's eviuence” against pe! plunderers. There may be, and we fear there 18, room for suspicion that the legislation of Con- gress is being sometimes imvde available tor the ad- Facemett of rer and private schemes of ag- grandizement; we doubt mach whether those who are guilty in the premises have not their surest against detection and punishment in the that the prosecutors can get no one to believe their testimony on account of the notorious infamy of the witnesses There is a ot aeiae Lape Over, which may follow these re corruption, which might be Salome onmiorel tr by ee parties implicated. An incredible witness may re- peat his testimony 80 often that is may finally gene- rate @ suspicion of guilt, which is almost as fatal to a public man as proof of the a especially if the charges are allowed to be repeate: rain and agaio without refutation D cdettales bas parties accused. For example, the editor the Times, who was the late Lieu'enant Governor of New York, says in his issue of Jan. We know that a oorrupt orgavization of members of Cragrane ont Certain lobby agents at Wi has isted since early in the sess'oa of last year. Satlafied that this organization bol is a balance of power to kill or oarry any measure pending in the House 0! Representatives, and ‘that its power ha» deen exerted in favor of measures whore ita price ($000 per voto generally, or its equiva. cet Ratna 40; aud tant it has been used to pre- favorable action on equally meritorious measures wan Were upabie or unwiiing ¢) suzmit to the piratical tribute. Here is a direct charge, and the editor professes to “know” its truth, Takiog inco view the fact that the editor of the Henap oas again and again proved that the author of the charge is just as infa- mous as a witness as himself, the charge would hard- ly be eaflicient to raise a suspicion of guilt; but sup- pose the charge is repeated duy after day in the same confident and defiant tuse, and none of tae im- plicated parties contront the accuser and repel his its. The natural consequence would be that there were grounds for suspicion, which would soon ripen into conviction of guilt. Who the parties are tout are thus implicated we neither know nor conjecture. The Times makes one remark, however, which wduces us to add another word of comment. That remark is this:— This organization is connec io no party, but embraces members of them all—'r it is 4 sioguiar now rious fact that, while patri isu cansot rise avove partizan oo: elcerations, villainy ox According to this allegation, there are democrats implicated in this iofamous charge. It is neither our business nor our wish to allude to those of the other parties implicated. We hope for the honor of the nation, that ncne are guilty; but so far as democrats are concerned, we are interested to know what toandation there is for so gross a charge, and one which we believe to be a vile calumny. If black republicans and Know Nothings choose remain silent under such an imputation made by a leading black republican organ, we insist that democrats shall not allow their party to be involved in sucha dishonorable associattion of corruption and crime. If there be any one calling himseif a democrat who is guilty, let him be known, aud ve hesitate not to say that be will be promptly scvnted from our ranks by the united voice of the party. Bat, after all, we cannot covclade without calling to mind the factthat the Hexaup and the Times, the foremost in charging corruption on others, and equal- ly earnest in charging it on each other, constitute fwost that famous quintuple alliance which combined together to piace the goverament under black republican rule. If there is truth in the char) of corruption made by thea:, we have no doubt that exposure will fall on thore who co-operated with them in the Presidentiai election What acom- mentary, then, have we on black republicanism ! ‘What would have been the limits to corruption and sae if the government had passed into their ds, if it be true that euch things 4s the Hexatp and Times now charge are true’ What abundant cause has the country to rejoice that it has escaped the dominion of the quintuple alliauce ? But we have no wish to revive tae discussion of matters that entered into the late canvass. The democrats have the responsibility of the government on their shoulders, and we are chiefly concerned that they shall not be implicated in an infamous com- besten with black republicans and Know Nothings of plunder. We believe the charge to boul ly Fm and in this declaration we ex- pect to be sustained every de ocrat in Congress. As te the black repudfioans and Koow Nothings im- plicatea, we have nothing to say, except that we Bal be ratified if they too shall fix the brand of (ebeuiod upon the charge so far as it attaches to Saperior Court—Gene Term.
