I sibeod sywom is yes in ts imancy, but must be de- voce’ wih apie stlcos, Wisconsin is, by all odds, the ficest of our Northwestern States. It ts free from all thore drawbacks, such a¢ fever ami ague, &., which bave retarded the growth of other Western States and Tecritories, aud the progress, as railroad: penetrate its fertile valleys, must be far im advance of anything nere- tofore realized. The route of the Milwaukie and Missis- eipot Radroad is directly across the State, from east to west, from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi river, throagh ‘the southern tier of counties, draining the entire Sta! somewhat similar to a river running along the base of « range of mountains. The geographicai location of this road is not surpassed by any in the West. Its present business is drawn from a sparsely populated country, ani yet it earned in 1855 twenty-five per cent om its capital stock, As soon as that portion of the Sta'e now intersected by this road becomes more dewsely populated and more extensively cul- tivatei—as soon as the agricultural resources of the State are more widely developed—the Milwaukie and Mississip; oe must be the largest dividend paying work the country. Taere is one importaut act relative to railroads located in the new Western States whieh tg no: sufficiently means Dy capital- sts and mea of moderate means. We refer to their eariy constr vetion ani ultimate cost, They are constructed at comparatively small expeuse, and their productiveass: always keeps far in advance of their increase of capital. "he country around taem upon which tn+y depend for Dusi.ess, grows 80 much faster Ke they do, that their earnings must siwe: ays be very large on the investments. Whee they pay with buta fraction of the soil along the Npe cuitivat+d, apd the settlers few and tar between; with prairies around taem reaching as far as vision ex- tends, wi hou' the first habitation, what must be their revenues avé their productiveness when that fertile soil ia covered with an iadustrious popuiation. and its pro- ducta have increasea ten thousand flit We leave this to the consideration of those who have investments in tac old expensive railroads of the Eastern States. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the average daily movement in the leaciog departments of the banks of this city during the week preceding Saturday moraing, January 19, 1856:— Nzw Yor Crry Banks.
