- FINANCIAL AND COMMEROIAL, MONEY MARKET. Farpay, Jan. 6—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was quite active and buoyant « today. Every stock on the list improved, and the ‘tbe advance seeme 3 to possess considerable strength: Virginia 6’s went up 2 per cent; Indiana 5's, 1; Biinols Centra) Bonds, 1; Delaware and Hudson, ‘14; Cumberland, 3; Vanton Company, 4; Nicaragas _ Transit, 3; New York Central Railroad, 1; Erie Railroad, 3; Hazlem Railroad, 4; New Jersey Rail- read, }; Hudson River, 4. Galena and Chicago Rail- road sold at 80.8803 per cent. Michigan Central and Ohicsgo and Rock Island were firm at previous State stocks were sold to some extent guine bear. New York Central Bonds are now selling at one per cent below the current price fo the stosk. The former draws seven per centin eash, and the latter draws the present year eight per cent in seven per cent bends at par. It has been reported that the Nicaragua Transit Company were largely interested in the Kinney Mosquito Expedi- agers or directors interested individually in the Jand project of Col. Kinney and his associates, The ‘Transit Company confines its operations entirely to the transportation of passengers to and from Cali- fornia. It can make money emough to pay ita stockholders good dividends in that business, with- > out engaging in doubtfal enterprises, either in Mosquito or eleewhere. There is no doubt but. that the success of the Kiliney expedition would be of great benefit to the Nicaragua Transit Compaty, by giving it a large amount of business, and en- hancing the value of ite landed property on the Isthmus. It has therefore been considered the wisest policy to keep clear ef all political entangie mente, and confine themselves entirely to their Jegitimate business. The market value of Erie is wastained upon the probability of the new loan be- ing filled up. Bids have already been put in for an amount nearly equal to that required, and it will without doubt be announced on the 10th inst—the ., Gay fixed for opening the bids—that the entire loan bas been taken, and that bide were put in fora much larger sum. This we are prepared for, and hope we ehall not be disappointed. As soon as the rate is fixed for the new loan, we shall be able to figure out the result. In the meantime, the market value of the atock will probably appreciate, and be- come quite active. The sales at the first Board to- day amounted to more than three thousand shares. ’ ‘The funds placed in the hands of Mesars. Wad- worth & Sheldon by the State of Illinois, for the payment of interest on ite debt, were the accumula- tion of several monthe. There was an understands img with the State Treasurer that the uss of the remitted by him should be an equivalent for ‘vices rendered in making transfers, paying divi- nds, &c. Am open account between the parties kept, which was sometimes largely in favor and times against the State Treasurer. The im- which has gone abroad, that Messrs. Wads- orth & Bheldon received the amount from the State 'a few days before the interest became due, in one remittance, is erroneous. In accordance with an egreement with the State authorities, the firm had made use of the .fands long before it had ‘become eo much embarrassed. We make this state- ment in justice to Mesars. Wadsworth & Sheldon; ‘but we must condemn the system, practised by pri- banking houses in this and other cities to such extent, of using trust funds placed in their hands special purposes. There wasan offer of 85 per cent for 100 shares of Gal@ns and '@ Chicago, without finding a seller. The absurd panic im this stock has nearly subsided. Tne legality of the sales made yesterday at 70 per cent will be disputed. 0 The New York Central Railroad Company have declared & semi-annual dividend of four per cent, which, with the dividend declared last August, will be paid in the company’s certificates at par, con- vertible into seven per cent convertible bonds when presented in suitable sums. This will about use up the three million issue of bonds which the com- pany have been so long trying to sell. According to the annusl report of the Sixth Ave- ‘Bue Railroad Company, the receipts for the sleven months ending with the Ist of Jaauary were $223,690 39, and the expenses $188,463 73, showing @ net profit of $35,226 66. Adding the estimated Profits of the present month, and the balance on hand at the commencement, the amount applicable for dividends of the year will be $41,639, of which $26,250 were appropriated to the Aggust dividend. ‘The cost of the road amounts to $776,226 50, which is represented by $750,000 capital, $4,780 balance of morgeges, and $21,486 50 borrowed from the Paid for of the Hamilton Fire Insurance Company, in place John Bruce, Esq., resigned. Leavitt, treasurer, at the American Exchange Bank, on presentation of the bonds and evidences of ‘The last annual report of the Fit:hbarg and Wor- cester Railroad Company says that the total earn- ings of the past year were $42,647 83; total cost of working the road, $19,250 09; net earnings, $23,. 397 74; paid interest and dividends, $13,615 12— leaving of $9,782 62, The increase of earnings was $6,411 89, while the increase of the expenses was only $1,345 46. The earnings of the road have been sufficient to pay six per cent of the debt, and nine per cent on all outstanding stock, if, as has been customary with most railroad manage- ments, no allowance was made for, depreciation;’ ducting that allowance, the balance is sufficient to pay six per cent on both classes of preferred stock. On the let of November last, the whole bonded debt of the road, amountiug to of $60,000, fel due; a large’ number of the old bondholders took new bonds at par in exchange; $4,000 old bonds are now outstanding, and money was obtained to pay the balance, at six per cent interest. ‘The Governor of Illinois, in his mcssa ge to the Legislature of that State, gives the annexed ex- hibit ofthe State debt on the let January, 1955:— Fivancrs oF [111N01s—AMoUNT oF Pusiic Dent. 1856, Jan. 1. . We regret to announce that almost all kinds of farm @roduce show an increase over last week. There is ap- parently a large quantity of meat, poultry and vegetables on hand, and saler, especially of meats, are light, yet the prices continue inordinately high. Meat has advanced two and three cents a pound on the most commonly used varieties. Cattle were twelve dol- lare a hundred last market day. This accounts in a measure for the increased price; but the fact that sales are light, people preferring to use fish, will doubtless eventually reduce its value. Of poultry there is considerable of the poorer Western varieties, but of good Jersey fowl there in very little in market. Prices continue quite high Fish shows an increase, as does also nearly every kind of vegetable, with the exception of potatoes, which could not well be much higher. Apples are scarce, and the prices, of course, are quite high.
