Destructive Fires. FIAE AT CHELSEA, MASS. Bostox, August 23, 1854. (Cessimer Vogel's silk factory in Chelsea, was destroyed ‘by fire last n!skt. ‘The loss reaches $15,029. FIRES IN CONNECTICUT. Hearvorp, August 23, 1864. ‘The Leeds mill, for the mannfacture of saticet, at Rockvilie, was last evenivg found to be on fire in the capper stories, and was damagod to the amount of some ten thousand dollars. The loss is fuliy covered by in- eorance. In Meriden this morning the barns of Linus Birdsey and Jobn Ives were both destroyed by fire. Mr. Birdsoy shad his face badly burned. FIRE AT RICHMOND, VA. . Ricmmoxp Va., August 22, 1854. ‘The tobseco factories of hiessrs. Gentry & Hatcher, and Mr, J. W. Atkinson, were destroyed »y fire lest night. The loss is estimated at $50,000. A wallof ons of the buildings fell on three firemen, killing one of them and seriously injuring the others. The Yellow Fever at the South, Gavannan, August 23, 1854. The Board of Health report the number of desths for the past week at sixty-seven, including forty-four from gellow fever. The diseage ix decreasing, only a few new cases having been reported recently. It is entirely eon- fined to the eastern section of the city. Many citizens are leaving, however, from fear of its effects. The native Americans of Philadelphia met in convention on Monday, and nominated candidates for{Recoréer,Clerk of Quarter Sessions, Prothonotary and Recorder. The democratic State nominations are as follows : For Governor, William Bigler, of Clearticla county. For Jucge of Supreme Court, Jeremiah 3, Bleck, of Ecmertet counts. For Cazal Commioner, Henry 3. Mott, of Pike county Bigler bas come out against the Know Nothings, The whigs of the Franklin distri-t have nominated D.F. Robinson, of Chambersburg, for Congress. He hes free soil tendencies. Hon. David Wilmot is canvaesing northern Pennsylvania, in support of the principles contained in bis proviso of 1847. The Americans of Schuykill county Lave nomiat- ed a full county ticket. It is expected that the whigs, by aid of the Know Nothings, will cerry the State, but that J. R. Chandler will lose bis seat in Congress, as he is a Roman Catholic. The Democratic County Convention at Easton, on the 21st, was largely attended and very ha:mo. nious. Strong resolutions were passed in favor of the administration and tle Nebraska bill. The meeting was addreased by Senator Brodhead, of Pa., and Gov. A. H. Reeder, of Kansas. MARYLAND. We learn fron some persons who profess to know something about the Know Nothings, that tke or der is increasing at a rapid rate in Maryland, mach to the alarm of the old togies, politival jugglers, wire pullers, &:. &c. The election will take place on the first Taesday in November. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. The new Mayor of Washington is ergaged in re moving all foreigners from office, and the Heads of departments retaliate by removing all persons sup- posed to belong to the order of Know Nothings, VIRGINIA, The State election takea place on the fourth ‘Thursday in October. The Kaow Not ings are said to be very numerous in this State. Hon. Heary A: Wise hasbeen recommended as the democratic can- didate for Governor by several primary mectings. ‘The State conventions have not yet been called.
