large and exceedingly interesting compilation of his correspondence, &c., edited by hie von, the whole making two ample octavos. Scarcely any work re- lating to the early days of the republic possesses or ammceas for the man of letters or the politi- Mr. Charles Francis Adams has nearly ready the tenth and conciuding volume of the works of his grandfather, Jonn Apams; and the first volame, which will embrace a life of Adams, indexes, &., will speedily follow, completing this most important collection of the ideas which governed our heroic age. In historical value the works of John Adams must be ranked next to the let- ters of Washington, and on a par with the writings of Hamilton, Madison, and Jefferson, and they should be carefully studied by every one | who attempts to write or speak of American instita- tions or policy. We are glad to learn that four ad- | ditional volumes will follow, of the private corres- pondence of the Adams family—of the letters of John Adams to his wife, her letters to tim, their | Jetters to and from their children and their fatimate | Alends. It is needless to say that Mrs. Adams was one af the great women of her age. Her letters al- ready pried evince her intellectual eminence, her woman!iness, ant the interest and segacity with which che regarded prulic affairs. Her communi- cations to ber friends while he was with her hus- band, reflect the feelings displayéd at his table and ‘among his partisans; and those which she wrote to him when they were separated, betray all she knew of the spirit of the society in which she moved. ‘These four volumes will be more entertaining and searcely less valuable than any letters relating to our early history, which have ever been printed. It bas lately been stated that Mr. Van Bonen ia mach occupied at Rome with the composition of hia Memoirs. We knew and atated in the Henao, Jong before Mr. Van Buren went abroad, that he hhad been thus occupied for years at Lindenwold. Perhaps the venerable ex-President has taken his manuscript to Rome for final revision, under the in- struction of those wily gentlemen—the Jesuits—who @re reputed to possess such extraordinary skill in equivoque, convertible meaning, and all that kind of foxcraft which has been the Little Magician’s chief distinction; or he may have been inteot only upon getting beyond the influence of contending parties, 0 as to write with the most scrupalous and impar- tial honesty—looking back from Italy as from an- other age, altogether removed from contemporary factions and prejudices. However these thinga may be, Mr. Van Baren’s will be a remarkable work, and we learn that it will be very volaminous—probably not less so than Mr. Benton’s. Ot memoirs, biographies, histories, &c., of or by public characters who figured in this country during the first half of the present century, there ia likely to be an abundant supply. Mr. Ticknor and his associates will in the coming year bring out one or more of the volumes of Mr. Webster's Life and Let- ters—which, as Mr. Ticknor is to have the chief management of the matter, we may be sure will be written and edited in a manner altogether faultless. The venerable Josiah Quincy, the only surviving member of the House of Representatives which was elected in 1804, will publish, in the fall, his Memoir of John Quincy Adams, in two octavos. Mr. Crallé is busily occupied with the Life and Letters of Mr. Calhoun, to precede the collection of his Speeches, &c., now being issued. The Rev. Dr. Colton is ar- remging and annotatipg the immense number of Jetters to and from Mr. Clay, which were a few weeks ago confided to him by the great orator’s family. And a brother of the brilliant political and Congressional meteor, Sergeant 8. Prentiss, hes in the press a biography of that extraordinary man. | Robbe: A son of the late Richard Henry Wilde, also, has in preparation a memoir of that accomplished poli- ftician, elegant scholar, and most agreeable gentle- man; but this work, we suspect, will be rather Mterary than political. Having referred to so many forthcoming works in ‘this department, we will venture to mention the fact, long known in the private circles with which that distinguished gentleman is connected, that Mr. Horace Binney will leave for posthumous publica tion an account of his life and times. Thia great lawyer and variously eminent citizen has no sape- rior, # he has an equal, among the living masters of Engfich style. Every paragraph from his pen is deserving of study for its compactness, finished elegance, and fulness of significance. His work will display a wide range of scholarship, a rarely paralleled knowledge and appreciation in art, and such profound views in politics and the philosophy of society, as will command the respectful censide- ration of the best thinkers. The most delightful and most popular work in history or biography, to be published in America dur- ing the present or coming season, will be an edition of Plutarch’s Lives, partly from Dryden's transla- tion and partly from otber hands, with some origi- wal translations by the editor, Mr. A. H. Clough, late Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, and now con- nected with Harvard College. The common version of Plutarch, by Longhome, is deficient in every qual- ‘ity that should render such a performance occepta- dle to intelligent readers. Of all the versions, those | ¥ of Dryden and North, (which wiil be largely used in the forthcoming edition,) are the best ; anda better Nving editor or translator of Platarch could scarcely be found than Mr. Clough. We are glad the most graphic, dramatic, and altogether agreeable of the elassice] historians is at length to be accersible to Engit-h readers in a proper costume. The edition will be in fine laxurious “ Boston octavos,” than which nothing can be more attractive to the literary epicure. ‘The Commencements. ‘The following has been received since our lest no- ‘tice of the commencements was published:— Jaurs Gorpon Bexxert, Es9.— 8m —The Sfteenth annual commencement of ‘The Batgers Female Institute” will take place on Friday pr ay July 7, 1864, in the street Chareh. ‘We avail ourselves of this meana of reqnestiog your attendance at the Institute, (No. 266 Madison street,) at 2 P. M. on that day, to accom; the board in proces- sion to the church = bel the Board of Trustees. speveete es Se wc, jane, 1854. ‘We are regularly overwhelmed with invite. tions to attend the annual commencements about to ‘be held in different parts of the Union. We find ourselves with regard to them somewhat fin the position of Captain Macheath between hhis brace of attractions, Our inclinations would lead un to attend the whole of these interest- ing exhibitions; bat alas! both time and space oppose insuperable obstacles to our desires. We anust, therefore, content ourselves with trying to @eccomplich that which is humanly possible, begging our correspondents to accept this general apelogy where our absence is unavoidable. New SreaMkR SErweEN Borraro ap Dernort.—The new steamer Western World, commander Stanard, is to leave ‘Baflalo on her Arst voyage to Detroit, on Thursday next, and wil return to the former city on Saturday. This ‘weasel belongs to the People’s line of steamers, and is @ald to be the best as yet built by the company.
