FINANCIAL AND MONEY MARKET. Weonuspay, Jan. 26-6 P.M. ‘The stock market this morning was steady. The Variations are:x—Ohio 6's, 1860, advanced 4; Erie ‘2d Mowtgage, 4; Erie, '71, 4; Morris Canal, j; Crys- tal Palace, 6; New Jersey Zinc, 4; Portsmouth, Cumberland, 3; New Creek, 4; Panama, 4. Penn- wylvania Coal declined }; Florence and Keyport, 14; Phoenix, 2; Erie, }; Long and, 2; Hudson River, “1; New York and New Haven, 3. The, Arabia, which leaves to-morrow (Thursday) ‘morning for Liverpool, takes out in specie $150,000. The transactions in the stock market are large, and evince a growing spirit of speculation, which will no doubt give to the securities dealt in that Yaoyancy which has already affeeted every other species of property. The remarks made at the morn- ing seaslon of the Stock Exchange by au cminent member, have a point which we think worthy of con- veying to the public for more general appreciation, and bad'reference to the introduction of the many new projects which are starting into life throughont the country, and which, he remarked, should not be attributed golely to a spirit of speculation, but to the spirit of enterprise which has, under the encouragement afforded by an unparalleled state of commercial prosperity created the wants * which other enterprises are again destined to sup- ply. Of this character are the navigation and trang ‘portation companies, which superinduce the neces- wity Cor fuel, and thus lead to mining projects, of which the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania and the Cumberland region of Maryland «are at this moment the busy scene. Nor is New York alone in her awakening sense of the growing prosperity of tbe country at large, and of the necessity which ex- ists for allowing speculation to take a wider range in ita search for legitimate objects of enterprise. We see, for instance, that the project for establishing @ maritime city at the harbor of Bruns- wick in Georgia, has been received with favor by thoes who haye bad the best opportunity of jndging of ita merits. We are informed by a report of the Vresident and Directors to the stockholders of the Brunswick City Company, ‘‘that their property con- sists of three thonsand and fity-seven lots of land, in- cluding the old town of Brunswick, (as laid out by Governor Oglethorpe, under the reign of George II more than a hundred yeara ago,) on which the sum of six hundred thousand dollars bas been expended in the erection of wharves, public buildings, storehouses, steam mills, &c., &c. Now, when it is considered that the harbor ! Brunswick has been pronouuced by a committee, consisting of Commodores Woolsey, Claxton, and Shubrick, appointed by the government of the access, and capability of defence—that it is perfect- twelve miles in w straight line northerly from Brunswick. ‘The intervening neck of land {s nearly level, and the soil easy of excavation. Under the authority of the State of Georgia, a canal is in procese of construction, connecting this river with the port of Brunswick. 060 bas been expended on the work, whieh is‘nearly comploted. Of this sum, $50,000 was subseribed and paid by the State of Georgia.’ Ita A look ix being coustructedat each end, to be by tide water. dated in December, vnly thrce hundred thousand square yards of excavation to be made. The force empioyed amounts to five hundred hands, exclusive of the force of whites. wonth of Mareh, at an aaditional outlay of only $40,000. hy this channel the timber, cotton, rice, and other pro- ducts of the vast region ‘of country to which we have niinded, will find a cheap and easy access to the ren, throngb the port of Brunswick. Four steam mills are {0 the couzse of erection there, and it is confidently bo: Leved hat at least 500 vessels will be laden with lumber es during the next sea.on. The other link of commu tion ia the construction, by the Brunswick and Flo- sida Railroad Company, of & line of read from Bruns- wick to the Gulf of Mexico, via Thomasvill Georgia, and Tallahassee, to the port of St. Marks, a branch from ‘the main line at Troupville to Albany, on the Flint river. energetic management. wiek and Flori ‘The company propose to extend their road, at the ear Lest practicable moment, from Thomuasvitle to Hensucods java direct Line. wick C wvities, At a meetingeof the directors of the New Jersey Zine Company, held at their office, C. Detmold, Fsq., was duly elected President; Horatio Allen, Keq,, of the firm of Stillman, Allen & Co., Vice Pre sident; and A.P, Pilot, Exq., of the firm of Villot & Le Barbier, to fill a vacancy in the direction. The Syracuse and Utica Railroad will pay a di dend of six dollars per shure te the stockholders, on 4he 16th of Vebruary next. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Trea- surer of this port, to-day, amounted to $69,515 11; paymenta, $141,712 64—balance, $3,206,622 01. . ‘The eleventh annual report of the directors of the Moston and Fitchburg Railroad Company has been issued. The carnings of the main road and branches for eleven months ending Nov. 30 amounted to 7 07; actual expenses of running the road during same time, $264,729 72. The company are uilding a now freight house, machine shop, several Ddlacksmith shops, car houses, &c. When tbeze im- provements are ali completed, the directors think they will be able to save at leset half the interest on their cost, in the expense af doing the freight business ani repairs of the road feruitore. The gross income of the road for the eleven months of 1862, as compar: | od with the aame period the preceding year, shows an inerenge of $33,264 31. Notwithstanding there has deen a decrease in the number of passengers carried athere has been an increase in the earnings received jyom passengers, the travel averaging longer than in the former year. The gain on passengers is $5,376 4, The increase of freight for the eleven months ix 86,009 tons. The road, furnitore, track, station houses, &e., were never in better order than at the | present time, There haa been a great dea) more doing in dry xoods during the past week, than in any provions | week of the year, or in any week since the close of The fail season. Buyers from the interior lave pur- | ehased with much freedom, and shippers have 30 dealt largely. The auction sales which occurred ou | Jat Wednesday ond Thursday wern harbingers of activity and buoyancy. Since they took place, a large and permanent increase of demand has o eurred; and while stocks have pot been materially angmented, prices have assumed givater strength and firmness. Brown sheetings and shirtings are moderately active, at fall rates These fools are not abundant, and are daily becoming lees fo, the | arrivals not being so ample as the sales. Bleached | sheetings and shirtings are generally in light supply, | and wanted, both by domestic jobbers and exporters, | at uniform figures. Cotton flannels have been in » little more roquest, and maintained their price. Denims are unchanged. Drills find rea Jy buyers, at | Se. for browns, 84e, for bleachhd, and g4e. for | blues. Ginghams are freely dealt in, at LO} | Manchestors, and Lc. for Glasgows and Lancasters, | Lawns bave attracted more attention. On Wednes- and Thursday last 1,000 cases of Portamouth and Lodi gooda were sold by anction; they met with eager and liberal buyers, and renllzed very f prices; the Portsmouth Company's goods had the advantage of the 1 gnd extremely pop ii fabrics, in being well known The Lod Company ts of ge | | | 1 United States, to be superior to either Beanfort or | Savannah as a port, from its depth of water, ease of | ‘The sum of $550,- + Jength will be twelve ae a By the last report o€ tho engineer, | it appears that thore remained | ‘The | work will be in full and successful operation during the | v the Eowilsh and French markets ani for tho Northera | ids, with | This road is now under contract and in course of conatruction. under the most experienced and | i (See seeond report of the Bruns. | Railroad Company, dated January, 1883.) | With these facts in view, we predict for the Bruns- | iy Company a high degree of consideration | tom the capitalists of this and the neighboring | cent establishment, and the sale of the goods held on Thursday last was the frat ever made; on this account they did not meet with the success of the Portsmouth Company's fabrics, thongh in their qua- lity and and finish they compared very favorably with the Portamouth lawns. Since tho auction aales | both the Lodi and Portsmouth goods have been in good demand, at the prices then procured for them, viz., anaverage of 11c. for the best styles of Lodi, and | 18{c. for the best styles of Portsmouth. Printing | cloths are less in request, at previous quotations. Prints are quiekly bought, at current rates. Ov naburgs are rather more active, but the aggre gate sales are not very large, though they de note much firmness as regards prices. Stripes are moving more freely and are steady. Ticks vegin to soll in congiderable quantities, and command full prices. Woollons are moderately active ond unchanged. Blankets and flannels are in fair request and firm. Plain and fancy cassimeres are more enquired for, the fancies at 80a 90c. for low styles, 90c. a $1 for medium do., and $1 124 for best do. Cloths are comparatively scarce and qutet at the recently enhanced rates. Jeans are sparingly dealt in, though they remain firm. Linseys are rare and needed, at 174 8 184¢. Mous do laines are sale- } able and uniform. Satinets are in demand at old rates. Tweeds are scarce and wanted. Local dealers refrain from doing much, con- tenting themselves with as moderate stocks as their | necessities will permit them to have on hand. Cot- j ton manufactures are not the most active. Ging- | hams are freely bought, at full rates. Lawns are | neglected, the auction sales of last wook having sup- plied jobbers for some time hence. Prints are in- active; they have not been extensively imported, | and they are not abundant; nevertheless, they can- not be sold without difficulty or lows, hay- | ing been almost wholly superseded by domestic j goods. Woollens are in fair request. Blan. ; kets are much wanted, aud command higher | prices. Cloths are doing better. They are in light | supply and active demand, at improving rates. Ba* | rege mous de laines are moderately sought after, and ! gre firm. Doeskins are saleable and uniform. Other woollen and worsted goods are in moderato demand, ot full prices, Linens are more in request. ‘Che auc’ tion sale which occurred in the early part of the week was well attended, and the goods offered wore all disposed of at remunerative rates. Staple and fancy silks, and all kinds of silk and millinery goods, owe selling pretty frecly at fair prices.
