Seme of the smaller clare of fancies, which have not moved upward much, may have their turn, and reach a level with those in which rpeculation hae so long run high; but the power to raise any stock on the list much higher, appears to have been nearly exhausted. ‘The trip of the steam ship Pacific from San Fran- cisco to San Juan del Sur, and the’ steamship Northern Light from San Juan del Nicaragua to New York, has shown that the Nicaragua route, thus far, isthe quickest aswell as the shortest be- tween this port and San Francisco, The whole trip be- tween the two ports was aceomplished in twenty-six days; including stoppages. Actual running time twonty-o1 days, Passengers crossed the isthmus of Nicaregua in thirty-ix hours, notwithstanding the very low stage of water, The new boats just put upon the Nicaragua river by the Transit Company, will be able to navigate it at all seasons without difficulty, The plank road from San Juan del Surto Virgin Bay will soon be completed, when the trip between New York and San Francisco will be made in twenty days. As extraordinary as this may seen, we have no doubt it will be accomplished within the next ninety dayr. Advices received from California by the steamship Northern Light, via the Nicaragua route, state that the clipper ship Challenge was on her way from Hong Kong to 8an Francisco, with one thousand passengers, princi- pally Chinese, This is acurious fact. A British ship ar- rived at San Francisco a few days previous to the depar- ture of the steamship Pacific, for San Juan del Sur, with five hundred Chinamen on board as passengers. . This thows that emigration from the East Indies to California has commenced in good carnest. The Chinese are the Irish of the Pacific; and we have no doubt ‘that emigra- tion from China to San Franciseo will, in a short time be almost equal to that from Ireland to New York, and other American ports. Ina short time this strange poo- ple will be attracted to Australia, and it would not sur- prise us much to see an arrival of a shipload or two of Chinamen at this port. We understand that ar- rangements have been made with the authorities of Cuba for bringing out six or seven hundred Chi- nese, to work on sugar and other estates of that island for @ certain period, at a fixed price per annum, By thisit appears that the Chinese are an emi- grating people—that they are desirous of secking their fortunes in other parts of the world than their own coun- try, to return, after having accomplished the object they had in view, to the place from whence they started. They area peculiar race, and, we believe, make good citizens wherever they go. Economical, industrious, ingenious, they steadily accumulate, and appear to be satisfied with small gains, To California and Australia they will be valuable accessions, and do much towards developing the mineral resources of those countries, The population of China is about three hundred millions, The Emperor could spare very well fifty milions of his subjeets, without feeling the loss, and that number would serve to populate several countries like California and Australia, The transportation of the vast numbers of Chinese who will leave home for other parts of the Pacific oceah, will give employment. to fleets of steamships and_ sailing vossels: ‘There will be a steady stream ef travel to and from China, for it iswell known that the Ch never expa- | triate themselves from their country.
