Whe Revenue of Great Britain. {From the London Observer, Jan. 41 The quarterly returns of the revenue will be mado y beiaaesow.sight, tbe. Sth inst. Although is still a week's receipts to be taken into ao- the general results are ly known to ee eee eee Teton ine aswell as com: n between the juarter ‘and the yearjust ended, and the correspond- Fy jar'er and year ending January 5, 1851. rere will probably be a falling off of eer) like £700,000 in the present quarter, as compa: with the quarter ending January 5, 1351, and the falling off upon the year will exceed by aL that amount. @ relative compariscn of the yoar and of the quarter are nearer to each other in amount | than they generally are This coincidence is aa- counted for by the same cause to whicn tho redas- tion is to be generally attribated. Uhe reduction in the receipts is entirely owing to the remission of | taxation. The window-tax is no longer oollected ; | and the houso-tax, which was substituted in part, | has not yet been received into the Exchequer. The | window-tax was collected half yearly, commenciog | in April and in October, consequently the half- | year’s amount of the repealed taxis to beset of @gainst the deficiency apparent in the roturas of the pre: uarter. For so much of it as is comoria: dn the inhabited house-tax, which was imp substitute, in part, for the abolished impost, is not | yet im course of collectioa. It is not lost, howaver ; it is only postponed The window tax yielded | about £1,800,000 a year. If that were svill ia course of collection, it would have prodused in this quarter somothing fie £900,000—a sum more thaa enough to cover the present deficiency of itself. ‘When tho Chancellor of the Exchequer gave up the window-tax and substituted the inhasited aouse duty, he did not calculate upon losing more than £1,000,000, and it is likely he will not lose so much But for the present quarter, it is not this difference only that is to be accounted for, but the whole sum is to be taken into account, for the house-tax is scarcely yet incourse of collection. In some dis- tricts the amount is not yet agsessed, and oveninthe most forward quarters tho collections have not got boyond the appeals against + sessment. It will be seen that the leading items of tho ordinary revenues are not merely in a sound, but in a moss prosperous condition, in spito of the redustions effeeted in each. In the customs. the amount collected in this quarter willbe about equal ro the amount raised in the corresponding quarter of tast year, which was £4,596,700. In tho excise, there will probably be a falling of in the amount aoliected in this quarter, aacom- nee with that of 1850-51, of no less than £150,000 his falling of ocenrs in the flares heads o collection, viz , malt, hops, and soap. In the cor responding period of last yeur, two instalments of hop duty were collectod, viz., the instalment pay- able in the ordinary course, and the instalment of the duty on the growth ot tho precediog year Tn stamps, there will be a reduction of £30,000 to £40,000, which may ho attributed to the re- ceipts of the preceding year having been augment- ed by the number cf legal ias:ruments which had been deferred beyond the Lich of Ostober, 1350, for the purpoge of obtaining the advantage of the ro- ducod rate of stamp duty granted by tae act Isand 14_Victoria, cap. 97. in taxes, there will probably be a decreaso of about £700,000, owing to the repeal of tha window duty, andthe collection of the house tax not having yet been received. There will also be a small falling offin the pro- perty tax of from £10,000 to £20,000, which arises altogether from the payments in the present quar- ter being more backward than in the corresponding quarter of last year. i B In the post ollice, the increase will be oonsider- able. Tho revenue derived from this head in tho quarter ending Jan. 5, 1851, was £152,000, whilst itis probable that in the present quarter that amount will be exceeded by more than £100,000. Thore will be also an increase in the item of mis- cellaneous receipts. Such are the leading features of the forthooming accounts of the quarter's revenue, and of the compa- tative atateofthe quarter and of the year, 13 com- pares, with the corresponding accounts of the or- linary revenue in the year and the quarter ending January 5, 1351. Often as we have had ground for congratulation during the last four or five years, there never was a statement, perhaps, so eminently satisfactory as the present. In spite of reductions of taxation year after year, the receipts keep up to almost the highest amount which they hadever reached. _ jut a more gratifying picture still is the dimi- nution of expenditure, which is carried so far by judicious reductions, as well as by the constant fall- ing in of the expensivo legacies left upon the coun- tty by previous misgovernment, as to leave usa surplus upon the year, of income over expenditure, of more than three millions and a half pounds tterling—the greates> umount ever ri known or available, even in the days of the abandoned sinkin; fund. [¢ is not to be, therefore, taken for grante that the Chancellor of tho Exchequer will take that sum as the groundwork of his estimation for the budget of 1852. The estimate is made, not of what was the actual balance ofthe first day of the year, but of the estimated balanee for the ensuing year, from the 5th of April. Te surplus last session was estimated at near two millions, which was partly applied in the reduction of taxation, and partly in liquidation of the debt—a principle which was enunciated asthe basis of future operations by the First Minister of the Crown and by the Chancellor ofthe Exchequer, and the soundness of which was very generally allowed. In this year wo shal!, in all probability, have a million more to dispose of in reduction of present and future burdens—an amount, in fact, greater than ever was available in any one year since the days ofsound modern finance. Germany. . ‘The Germanic Diet, in its sittings of the 31st ult, decided on the suppression and sale of the federal fleet. On this occasion Austria proposed to form the German navy in three divisions, to be com- manded respectively by Austrians, Prussians, and Germans of other States. Prussia opposed this ar- Tapgemevt, when the above final resolution was adopted. Prussia has declared her readiness to un- dertake the support of the fleet for one month. Trouble with the Birmese, ‘The last India mail informs us that a squadron consisting of a frigate, a sloop of w: da steam- or, has sailed from Caleutta, to domand satisfaction from the Birmese for spoliation and oppression towards our merchants and marinors, in violation oftreaty. The squadron is to take possession of the town of Rangoon, and hold it until full repara- tion be made. Rangoon is about twenty miles from the mouth of one of the greatest rivers of In- dia, the Irawadi, navigable here for vessels of the largest burthen, and for four hundred miles of its course for those of small sizo, hd cd steamers. ‘The place itself rises from the river side toa con- siderable elevation, and the locality, in fact, boin; an island, is not only defensible against an Asiatic enemy, bat commands the whole navigation of the irawadi up to the capital, which is the samo thing saying that itcommands the kingdom of the irmese Miscellaneous Items. Tue Axonsisior or Paris axp THE PReetpENt. —When it was almost certain death to appear on the Boulevarcs, the Arshbishop of Paris called upon the President at the Elysée, and requested permission to go and cffer the consolationa of reli- sion in their last moments to the insurgents mor- tally wounded behind the barricades. Hs petition was met by a positive refusal on the pars of Louis Napolesn. Nevertheless, after a long expostula- tion, which ended in nothing, however, the arch- | bishop resolved, without permission, to oxercise | the fuactions of his holy office, and expressed bis | determination to the President to that effect. The whole town, in fact, seems to have run mad—every class of our community, from the lounging idler tothe mort energetic, having gone post-haste to the rew El] Dorado, (some of them evon late at night,) and staked off claims for nearly a mile, up and down the hill sides bordering upon the head ofthe ChileanGulch.
