We aro sorry for this; for since the discovery of the gold mines of Califorais, we have wealth enough te support a permanent opera, of tho best clase, in this city, equal to that of London, Paris or St. Petersburgh. Before any thing of this kind, however, oan be done in New York—before we can have such an opora as is required—we must have a new opera house on # large and mag- nificent scale. .The present opera troupe, notwithstanding all the puffing and blowing which has been lavished upon it, does not come up to the measure of the public expectation. Half of its members are broken down vocalists who left Europe for Havana, because they could not get along there, and afterwards left Havana for New York, because they could not sueceed in the former place.
