MONEY MARKET. Tvxspay, Dec. 9—-OP. M. Stocks are quiet today Quotations remain sbeut the same as at the close yesterday. There is no specula- “flow abseed, and stocks are confined in their movements * to few bands. A broker sells to-day, and buys in to- morrow, and hopes have been entertained that outsiders would sooner or later be attracted, and relieve the street of the large lots of fancies which are now such a dead weight, The season has slipped away without any very important upward movement, and thore who have pur- chased largely with the impression that an active spe- culation weuld give them good profits, have simply made a mistake. If there is anything near the value in the fancies holders represent, they of course have no ob jection to carry them, but it is our impression that most of the largest holders are anxious to sell, that they are only prevented from putting their stooks on the market by the apprehension that a rapid depreciation would be the result. To sustain prices, it is necessary to keep the mark et as poorly supplied as possible, and to Keep up an active demand. Todo this, holders who al- Yeady have more than they want, are frequently com- polled (o purchase on a falling market, to prevent a se- rious decline. It is pretty certain that before any great istribution of the leading fancies takes place, prices must give way. Money is by no means abundant. There is anactive demand, and the brokers are not able to get all they want. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $52,030; payments, $09,940 30—Balance. $3,295,990 38, ‘The annexed statement exhibits the receipts of the ‘New York and Harlem Railroad Company in each of the first eleven months in each of the past four years: — New York axp Hanvem Raitroan. 1848. 849, 1850. $31,541 29,386 1862 $Al bor 87.101 42,016 49,610 January... The expenses, therefore, will largely ex- | ceed those of the previous year. The company are pre- paring their annual repert, which will be issued to the stockholders on the first of January, showing these facts, and therein they will justify themselves for not increas- ing their rate of dividend heretofore paid. ‘The United States mint paid certificates to No. 11.248 | yesterday. The Governor says that it is evident that the whole ten mil- lions of dollars wil! not be required to discharge the out- standing liabilities of the State, according to the scale which has been adopted for ascertaining the actual amount of those liabilities, and from which be can see BO reason to depart. There is not @ sufficient amount i2 the Btate Treasury to meet the ourrent expenses of the present Legislature. It is recommended that pro- vision be made to pay “the $260,000 interest, which will be due on the five millions United States bonds on the first of January next, into the Treasury es soon as practicable. A greut deal of the wheat arrivims at Boffelo from the West is manufaetured into four in this State, before forwarding to Tide Water. The bulk of the butter and cheese which comes to this market vi: the canal, is made in the State of NewYork. Very little barley comes from the West. This graim is cultivated extensively in this State, for malting, and brought to Albany for « market. Very little corm raised in the Btate of New York comes to Tide Water. It is princi- pally consumed in the vicinity of ite growth. ‘The last annua! report of the Norristown Railroad Com- pany shows that the duacces are in @ favorable condi- tion, and that its prospects are steadily brightening ‘The whole amount of receipts from passengers were $95,073 90, of which $08.426 00 was taken on the Norris- town branch acd $51.657 om the Germantown branch The whole amount of receipts from freight was $41,763 17, of which $90 153 32 was from the Norristown branch, and $2,550 95 from the Germantown branch. ‘Total from all sources, $190.960 92. The totel amount of expenditures. of all kinds, during the same period. tacluding two per ovat dividend upon stock, was $146,278 90, leaving a eash ba lance im the hands of the treasurer of $7,335 20. The estimated revenue for the year was $130,000, being $9,000 63 less than the actual receipts, and against $220,515 the previour year. This shows @ very prospe- yous condition of things, especially when it is takea into cousideration that the destruction of the bridge at Con- sbohocken deprived the company for the greater portion ofthe year of the coal business usually done from that point with the Reading road. The whole number of pacsengers conveyed over the road for the year was 606 500, or 1.611 per dey, against 457455 the previous year. The constant outlay for new rail, depots. cars engines, &e., &c , which the company bas liberally made the past year, are, of course, included in the total ex penditures; and hence, while the increased busines: on the road each euccestive year will enable it to contin these expenditures € Pom & more liberal scale. it will also emabie it to provide for a more rearonable dividend to the stockhclders. ‘The annexed statement exh ibits the condition of the Btate Bank of Indiana and branches, on the Slat of Oo- tober, 1%: Brave Baws ov Isnrava avo snancees, Oct, Sler, 1951. The season of navigation bas closed, and our supplies of agricultural products from the inverior will hereafter reach the seaboard by rail- road. Whatever exports take place must be made from the stocke now om hand, There is an immense popula- tion om the seaboard, to supply during the winter, a period of fulljfive months, end enormous quantities of provisions and breadstufls are required to meet the de- mand. It is estimated that im this city and immediate vi- cinity, there is a population of at least seven hundred and fifty thousand, depending upon receipts of produce by public worke, immediately connected with the city, for supplies for a long period of consumption. It is, there- fore,a matter of doubt, whether we shall have any quantity of breadstuffs for shipment. In the event of a demand springing up abroad, during the winter, the effect upom prices here would be great, as it would reduce our stocks for domestic con- sumption, and very limited shipments would naturally enhance the market value of all in first hands. The Erie Railroad and the central line of railroads through this State, will give us a better communication with the West, during the present winter, than we have ever had before in the same season, and supplies, to a moderate extent, will be continually kept up. Weshall, with this, have to depend principally on our present stock, and whatever tends to reduce that, tends to an inflation of prices. Cotton dces not move forward very rapidly, either from this port or from the South. Shipments of other articles have been to about the usual extent, and about the Usual variety. yore Excha 1Bdg i} The Cotton Trade, MR. THOMAS J. STEWART’S CIRCULAR. New Yorn, Sarvxpay, Dec. 6, 1851.
