Of the four failures alluded to, two were banking houses—one engaged in the shipping business, and one in the dry g00ds importing and jobbivg business, The amount in- volved in these fuilures cannot be less than one million ef dollars, Speculation is the cause of more bankruptey and ruinthan isever brought about by the legitimate operations of the community at large; and it is a de- viation from the regular line of business, and putting too many {rons into the fire at once, that uses up the substance of mort of those thus operating, and compels them, sooner or later, to anoounce their insolvency. The California trade hes, thus far, been most disastrous, and the failures that must result from the heavy losses realized, have Deen Just commenced.
