Gavett, B. L. Foote, B. Macy, A.B Miller, Geo, W. Pourland, on bebaif of all: the pox: sengers, TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK HERALD. In your paper ef 2ist instant, relating the splendid trip of the schooner Sierra Nevada, from Shanghai to Son Francireo. a distance of six thousand miles, in thirty. four days, averaging the whole trip about seven and a half knots per hour, you state, “ which is said to be the test distance ever made in as many consecutive days by any vemel on record.” - I would state that the ship Russell, of this port, arrived at Angier, August 13, 1848, in scventy-two days passage from New York, having sailed 14.049 miles, being an average for each day ‘of 1905, miles, and over eight miles per hour for the en- tire passage. ‘The ship Oriental, Palmer, of this port, arrived at Hong Kong, this past year, from New York, in less than eighty- one days; distance by observation, 16,145 miles, thus showing an average speed of 200 miles per day, or eight and a third miles per hour. For thirty-three consecutive days she averaged 239 miles, or nearly ten miles per hour; and for twelve successive days, an average of 250 miles each, And I belicve there are other veasels whose per- formances can be named, which will also exceed those of the Sierra Nevada. Yours respectfully, Dew Yous, March 21, 1851.
