Cotton has gone forward very rapidly lately, and at the high prices ruling im Liver- pool, the value runs up fast. For some time to come the importations will be limited; while the exports, from all parts ef the country, will be lerge, and the probability is, that upon the opeming of the spring, the balance on our foreign trade will be largely in our favor. The slight decline in cotton, reported by the Cambria, is of very little consequence, and will not only be wiped out, but s Jarge balance in our tavor ereated by the receipt im Liverpool of accounts from ‘this vide, relative to the state of the crops, the early frost, and the prospect of a yield than that of last year. We look fora very rapid decline in quotations for sterling exeh from the legitimate opera- tions of trade; and in the event of anything of a politieal nature transpiring on the continent, cal- oulated to create an active demand for our public securities, lower rates for sterling bills will be realised than bas been known for many years. Eigh- teen and twenty cents per pound for cotton will swell the aggregate value of our shipments of that article to one hundred and twenty millions of dollars or more, which is forty or fifty millions of dollars more thao we have usually realized for the surplus of our crop.— ‘With thie in view, we ree no probability of any tmme- diate check to the rapid progress we are making in every department of industry, and in every commer- etal enterprise. There t specniation going on in the staple articles of commerce. Bupply and demand continue to regulate prices, and we see no indications ‘of « departure from the legitimate channels of trade. Whe stock market alone hes been affected by the move ments of rpeculators, and even in thet there has been @ sounder and more healthy besis than we have ever Defore noticed.
