” [INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS, Our Washington Correspondence, Wasuixeron, August 18, 1850, Mprey Scenes coming in Congress—Evil or Good to Follow—The Ultras and their Aims~ Wallace and Houston--Georgia Democracy—Removals— Appointments, §c. ‘Times and scenes, tich, spicy, and interesting, may be expected in Congress for the remainder of the session. The crisis, for good er evil, is ap- proaching. tis near at hand. Something tangi- bie isto be done. Procrastination can no longer be resorted to If the House of Representatives will but take up aad passthe Compromise bills from the Senate, with- out material alteration, then all will be well. But if one of these bills should be defeated, then all will be ill. The eflort of the ultras, North and South, if made at all, to defeat any of the bills in ques- tion, will be made, as is supposed, upon the terri- torial bill for New Mexico; the Northern men opposing it because it has not the Proviso of Wil- mot attached to it, and the Southern men opposing it because its boundaries include slave soil pur- chased from Texas, which may be made free soil. The ultras may also unite in opposition to the ‘Texas boundary and bonus bill—the Northernmen because the pay Texas ten millions of dollars forsoil which that State never owned one inch of, and the Southern men because they can- not allow the government to pay ten millions of dollars for slave soil in order that it may be changed to free soil. ‘The Southern ultras may aid the Northern ultras in thes work of attaching the Wilmot to the territo- rial bill for New Mexico, in order to make it odions to the South. Should the Wilmot be at- ached, and the bill then passed, the scene that will ollow cannot be described The Southern vitres cannot count upon the aid and co-operation of the itionists, in the mutter of keeping California the Union, when the California bill shall be taken up in the House for action. That bill can be killed only by a resort to the Clingman expedient, to wit:—moving to ad- journ and calling fort yeas and nays, against *, and with a view to defeat the will and all non the part of the majority, ‘To morrow, it understood, an effort will be made in the Houte to teke up the Texas boundary bill. Prey Heaven it may pass, and all the other compromise bills frota the Senate. Let us hope on for the best, until it will be hoping against hope todo so. We shall soon know. That disunion is serously contemplated by a Jarge number of fireeexters at the South, there is no reason to doubt. About as many abolitionists atthe North are praying for the same wicked con- summation, But the Union men in the South and the Union men in the North will put down the disunienists South and North any day, without the aid of the strong arm of the federal government. Mr. Toombs, of Georgia, and Mr. Jefferson Da- vis, of Mississippi, are cbserved to be a great deal together now-a-days. Mr. Toombs is the bolder man of the two. He scarcely attempts to conceal his preference for a’ dissolved Union. Mr. Davis, asyet, denies stoutly and indignantly that be is a disunionist. He may grow bolder by and by, like his sectional friend, Toombs. Mr. Walluce, a'fire-eater in Congress from South Carolina, is out inthe Southern Press, under his own name, with a tirade of personal and political Vituperation® against General Sam Houston, Sena- tor from Texas. The affair creates a good deal of talk among all the politicians in the city at this time. It may be the designed beginning of the end of revolutionary secession. What notice “Old Sam” will be induced to take of Mr. Wallace’s on- slavght, 1emains to be seen. ‘The democracy of Georgia is divided on the sub- ject of selecting & candidate to run for Goveraor of the State. The Union men are in favor of running Mr. Speaker Cobb, while the fire-eaters are for running Mr. ex-Sevator Colquitt The members of the pew cabinet have conclu- ded, it is understood, to make no removals, to speek of, in the departments here, until Congress adjourns, as their constant attention until that time will be almost entirely devoted to answering the calls of Congress and of the members of that body in behalf ot the wants and requests of their constituents. But, soon after Congress does ad- journ, a united movement will be made on the subject of removals and appointments, which will make a stir and call forth a howl in this region— and then ali will be still again. But Congress may hold its session for two or thrée months yet—und if so, there will not be, be- tween its adjournment and the expiration of the term’of the present administration, a very long term for the new appointees to hold office in. Hed not the removals better be made at once, end the appointments also—the howl given—and anspense dispeveed with! Ovr Baltimore Correspondence, Batimorg, Aug. 19, 1850. At one of the alarms on Friday night, our firemen, as usual, engaged in a riot, during which Capt. Gifford, Chief of Police, was struck on the head with a brick, and considerably injured. Four of the Tioters were arrested, and committed to jail. A splendid clipper-built ship, called the North Carolina, was lavached here on Saturday. Her dimensions are as follows:—Length ot deck, 143 feet, 31, feet beam, and depth of hold, 21 feet, Her mode} gives assurances that she will be one of the fast ships, The Marshal and assistants have nearly com- pleted the enumeration of the inhabitants of our city, and from data in their possession, they an- movace that the population of the entire city will Teach 165,000, being an increase of about 65,000 since 1840. Our citizens will be much astonished at this result. Evidence of our prosperity could readily be seen on every side, but few persons were aware of our rapid growth in population. ‘Two wards have been completed, as follows:—Nine- teenth ward, whole number of inhabitants, 7,863 Of these there are 7,119 whi 4749 blacks. John Snyder, son of the late Gov Simon Spyder, a name still cherished with | devotion by nearly every democrat in the State Mr. Snyder (the son) was elected to Congress from the Union, Lycoming and Northumberland district, in 1841; but was defeated, when a candidate for a second term, by his well known whig opponent, Hon. James Pollock. The cause of his defeat, in a strong democratic district, is susceptible of an ensy explanation. During the brief period of Mr. Snyder's congressional labora, he became not a the enthusiastic admirer but the devoted fol- lower of Mr Calhoun anan's dangerous principles and prejudices, with | a fecility peculiarly South Carolinian; and to show bis diegust for the abolitionist Gid- dings, he actually caused a smoll partition to he errcted between his seat and that of Mr. G.
