Whe Late Rallroad Accident at Morrisania. 70 THE EDITOK OF THE HERALD. A writer in last Saturday's Herald, who signs him- ‘Welf “Fordham,” makes some statements, and casts some refleetions upon the Coroner’s jury, which de- mand a passing notice, . The coroner's jury, in the oase of Wm. Elvis, did ‘eensure the Harlem Railroad Company, attributing the collision to the want of an engine of sufficient power the aecommodation train, and saying, also, that the eompany was highly censurable for their disregard of the lives of their peep in the above particular. * Fordham ” ‘coud | not have seen the verdict when he penned his article, or he would have had a little more Teg pard for truth. ‘The jury did not censure the engineer, because he was not deserving of it; but) they threw the blame on the company, Where it proprriy beloaged; aod those who heard or have read the evidence, are ‘batis- fed with the verdict. “ Fordham ” is extremely ignorant of the subject ‘on which he writes, or else he purposely wishes to mis- ie the minds of others, Will not the reader be sur- Tised to learn, after perusing “ Fordham’s” article, Wat there are aiready two ks, or a double track, Detween Mott Haven and William's Brid, d that the collision in question, was oveasioned by the ex- ess train running into the accommodation train, Poth traiue being at the time on the same track, and moving in the same direction’? Such were the facts, yet who would come to such conclusion trom reading * Fordham’s”? article’ “¥Vordham ” is equally wide of the trath in regard to the collision near Mr. Bathgate’s farm. It was ia October last, instead of lart summer, that it oceurred, nor were there any human lives lost. Mr. Bathgate Jost nine valuable cows by the accident, and this was ‘the extent of the loss of life. I was on the spot at the timesand know the truth of what I write ‘bis colli- sion cecurred on the double track, though unlike the one on Monday last, the cars were moving in different directions. The event was occasioned by the cows being on the tracks of the read, and the air 60 deasely forey a8 to entirely obstruct the sight. am glad “Fordhem”’ has taken “pen in hand” to castigate the Harlem and New Haven companies, for eae richly deserve it; but a writer who attempts to teach duty to others, should contine himgelf to facts, as by resorting to falsehood, he neutralizes the intiuence of his own eensures, aud renders his stric- tures wholly powerless. MORBISANLA, United States Marshal's Office, Arrest of a Fugitive Forger.—Mr. Gilbert F, Mays, of the independent police, arrested, on Saturday, an old Scotchman, by the name of James Forbes, a fugitive Jorger from Aberdeen, Scotland, where he stands note, dated July 3d, ; for the sum of £400 or order, within the a razy, the gum of gn Ihave red pounds c AMES FORBES. ‘There re five’ ‘forged endorsements on the above note. A Southern gentleman has recently presented us with a specimen of a new variety of cotton, termed the banana, which be is cultivating this season, on one | small branch of which, about eleven inches long, we counted sixteen bolls; they stood different from the urual kind, and were thrown out in couples, or four stems, from each joint. Should the staple of this new variety prove good, it must add immensely, not only | to the yield im future years, but to the rapidity of | gleaning it, How wonderfully nature provides for the wants of mau! With an unpromising spring, there was every indication of sbort grain harvests, and only two months since, we caw calculations made, that we should have to export flour and corn to St. Louis, Missouri, (we actually shipped flour west from Buffalo) ‘as, in conrequence of the bad season, and California ‘emigration, the crops in that section would not sup- port the inhabitants, &e, The may prove similar in regard to this crop of cotton. A good crop has always succeeded a short one since it bas been grown for export; and although there was at one time great alarm expt be deviated from this year, it does not at present look like an exception, Yet, with the great requirements of the world at present, it is still doubtful whether the yield will be sufficient for the wants, provided it is ascertained that the great activity in the manufac- turing districts in Europe is for substantial present requirements, and are not at all based upon the pro- bable scarcity of the raw article. We are satisfied that the American interest is a very small one now, and it is possible that the Liverpool speculators may succeed in cornering their Lancashire friends, and prices be yet carried to nine or ten pence per 1b. for medium spinning grades. Books for subscription fer new stock to be issued for the construction of the Direct Line of railroad between Rochester and Syracuse, are to be opened in « few days, in Rochester, and at various points along the line. This is one of the most important railroad routes in the State, and we have no doubt the ne- cessary amount of capital will be expeditiously raised. The present line from Rochester to Syra- cuse {s 104 miles in length, The straight line branch will be about eighty-one miles betw city and city, and will require the construction of about seventy-five miles of new road, involving an expenditure of from twelve to fifteen hundred thousand dollars. It is estimated that the expense of irom and grading for a double track, trom Rochester to Syracuse, om the present line, would about equal, if not exceed, the expense of the right of way for and the construction of this new road seventy-five miles in length. The new track will go through or near the flourishing villages of Fairport, Macedon, Palmyra, Newark, Lyons, Clyde, Weedeport, Port Byron, and Jordan—an entire new range of villages, not at present accommodated by any railroad facilities. No other section of the Stateis equal, in all the elements of prosperity, wealth, popu- lation, and enterprise, to that between Rochester and Syracuse—none of equal extent its superior in the United States. Compared with the foreign trade of this port, Philadelphia can have no pretensions to commerce. The value of foreign merehandise imported into this port, during the month of July, was equal to the imports into Philadelphia in any two of the past four years, The monthly exports of New York are about equal to the yearly exports of Philadelphia.
