The President presided with his usual dig- nity, and give evideace, by his cheerfulness and activity, that he has, in a great measure, regained his health. Doubtless, if the President retains this blessing, the institution will sustain its present excellent reputation. ‘The orators of the day spoke handsomely. It is not saying too much, that they uitted themselves, as & whole, in astyle not rior to their predecessors. Among these, the he Valen- Freeman, Seheneetady, N. Y.; ak W. Is. He died’ in din hie eighty-third year, and, therefore, as full most brilliant and perspicuous were “* i, by S. ay Intellect,” be as of honor. At the late hour at which we receive the intelli- gence of his demise, it is not_in oar power to pare adetailed sketch of his life and services, would properly accompany this announcement. We fae le to mention that he was bora in the State of Delaware, which will long be id of his memory ,and refer to the glorious sea-fight on which bis fanie is founded, the affair of the Wasp and the lic, which his country will never allow to be forgotten. ‘This action was fought on the —< of October, 1812, and hence was one of the e as well as one of the most brilliant, of the oot victories of the war. Considering, im fact, the marked superiority of the British vessel inthe num- ber of her guas, with the vastly disproportioned o inflicted upon her, it may be almost ranked, as has often been pronounced, the most decisive tuten vues was fought; and it was —— crities to present an extraordinary dence of the superiort' - geome oe lish naval gunnery. ‘asp, if our leetions serve us, hid but alse ney the Fro. lie twenty-two. No wonder this vietory was deemed of so striking and important a character that the Legis- latures of New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, ind, we believe, other States, voted Captain Jones their thanks, with swords and age tal nee i poo that Congress conferred upon him, a handsome pecuniary lattes foo cad his own veesel, as will be remem! fring been captured immediately after the fight, by t Poictiers ee ee ies ihetroverament promoted him, as a mari its approbation, to command of the frigate Macedonian. le served the honor; he deserved the fame he ac- quired, which was not a little; as he deserved the regard of a multitude of friends, who knew how to prize the monly virtues of his private character.
