It will be «long time before we shall again have such move- ments in fancy stocks, as have marked previous years, no matter what may be the state of the money market in the meantime. The abundance or scarcity of money bas, after all, very little to do with prices for unproductive securities. We have kaown speculation Tun prices up ten and fifteen per cent in the face of rates of interest ranging from two tofour per cent per month; and the experience of the past six or eight months, is sufficient to satisfy evey one that it requires fomething more than an easy market and eheap rates of interest, to put up prices for anything possessing within itself no intrinsic value. For many years these artificial, unproductive stocks have been palmed off upon the community, at prices ranging from five to ninety-five per cent on their par value, and we still | find that time, instead of giving them a greater actual value, has in most cases taken away what little they ever poseessed, and thrown them into the hands of those with whom they originated, where some of them will remain, and eat themselves up by the accumulation of interest, Outeids operators have realised immense losses by holding this class of securities, and they have abandon. ed them altogether. While there was hope—while there | Seription of property—it was easy to induce those who | hada speculating propensity, to invest largely; but, as | the public mind bas been played with so much, so much disappointment experienced, so much expected, and so little realized, it will be impossible to draw in that class of operators who have heretofore been the life and oul ofall such speculations, We do not intand here to point out any particular stook, to illustrate | the correctness of these statements, as our readers have been pretty well posted up in regard to these stocks generally; but we point to every fancy on the list, and Tefer to the quotations of the past five years, as an evi- | dence of the truth of our remarks relative to the move- | The money market continues easy, but capital is not so abundant as afew weeks since, Business paper is offered daily in the etreet in large quantities, and the | tates rarge from six to twelve and fifteen per cent, ac | cording to quality. There are no fixed prices for paper, and as for the usury laws, they are a dead letter #0 far as Wall street operations are concerned, It rect account of the rates ruling for business paper, to draw up form similar to that used by cotton brokers, for the classification of the different grades of cotton, commencing with inferior and ending with good fair. | Then some idea might be conveyed of the ruling rates for money. The only criterion of the actual value of | rate demanded en oall loans, with government stocks as collateral security. There areas many prices for business paper as for the different qualities of any kind | of merchandise, and the necessity of holders has a great deal to do with the rates of interest. The current rate, on call, with U. 8. 6's as {security,J is elx per cent. The annexed statement exhibits the quotations for the princial speculative stecks in this market, for each day of the past week, and at the close of the week pre- vious, With one or two exceptions, prices have bean very uniform :— “ amped of prices current be ea cloee of the market yesterday, with those ruling at the close of the Previous week, exhibits an advance in United States | 6's, 1807, of % percent; Harlem 5; Morris Canal, } and @ decline in Pensylvania 5's of % per cent; Erie Raflroad, \; Farmers’, }¢; Hudson River Railroad, New Haven Railroad, 1%; North American Trust, 'y; | The annexed statement exhibits the value of foreign dry goods entered at this port, for consumptioa, for warehousing, and the amount withdrawn from ware- houre, during the past week :— Movements ix Foagsan Day Goops. ‘Entered Entered W'drawn forcon- for ‘rom sumption. $ he wavhouse. x oof Sita bear Manufactures of pine 8 $12, ery deseriptiom withdrawn from ing Jam. 20h, was $22) 305 received from im frem goods withdrawn from ‘There are several packets due at this por | probability is thet we shall, within the next week or two, have half a dozen in, with large and valuable The Subd Treasury has been pretty weil re- will ewell the deposits, before our spring Imports are all in, to s larger rum than bas yet been known. ‘The amount of coal transported on the Reading Rall- road during the week ending the 17th inst., wes 11,782 tons, Total, thus far this season, 111,213 tons. Same time last year, £6,602 tons It fa stated by two of the agents of the Erie Railroad Company that it has no intention of deviating from line located in 1845; that contracts are about be- made to construct the road through (Cattaraagus, Alleghany, and Chautauque counties, as originally con- templated. If such bas been and still is the intention of the company, we should like to know why the peo ple of the counties above named are continually peti- tioning to the Legislature to compel the construction of the road in accordance with the charter. Yesterday | two petitions were presented, and the Committee on Railroads in the Senate have reported @ special bill compelling the company to adhere to the original route. There is more in this movement than appears on the face of it, and we would advise the inhabitants of the southern tier of counties to watch the company closely. It i# playing a double game; and though its organs profess one thing, itis moving heaven and earth to accomplich another directly opposite. It appears by the official report that the reseipts of Worcerter Railroad Company, for the pest year, 1849, amounted to $236,107 61; expenses, $114,505 67; net revenue, $121,528 04; interest, $44,- ‘702 61. ‘The decision of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals, in the case of Briggs ve. the Camden and Am- bey Railroad Company, will create a great excitement among stockholders, and all others interested. It is paren d that more than one million of dollars are this result, This immense sum the rall- a company have extracted from the pockets of the lie, by Mlegal and exorbitant charges on freight, nd there is hardly a mercantile house in this city or Philadelphia, but that has a claim, under this decision, gaint the company, We do not know what ponsity | the company has ineurred, beyond the forfeitare of $100, in each and every case, and @ refunding of the overcharge; but, if it bas forfeited its charter, it will ed | bean opportunity for getting rid of one of the most | odious monopolies that ever existed, which the anti. monopely party of New Jersey will not suffer to eseape, ‘We are gied to see that there is one man in the Le- @elature cf Pennsylvania, who has independenes and boldness enough to denounce such a Dill as that pre- tented by the Reading Railroad Company, and the acts of the concern generally, That man is Mr. Cessna, of Bedford, who offered the following amendment to the Dill published Im the /fereld on the 26th inst. :— And provid: That before thie act shall if into effect, the trustees of raid com; shall gi , with securities for the faithfal jormane: alee, of tbe property in their Guties, in double th b to be 8 of the Court of ) OF properly amend, the origins! bit The Senate of Pennayivania has diegraced itself by parsing the Dill ae it was presented by the company, ‘ Answers to Advertisements sent by Mail must paneer, jhdcerements wen Mal ut ADVERTISEMENTS RENEWED EVERY DAY. be poet Aes over New Yous.
