Cuorce oF PresipentiaL Erectons,—The Wash- Ington Union, confesses its inability to answer the in- quiries of correspondent, with regard to the manner in which electors of President and Vice President are ehosen in the New England States; or whether = mojority or plurality is requisite for a choice by the people. ‘We believe the facts are these, viz.: that plurality elects in Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island; while a majority is required in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In the two latter States, if a majority of the votes of the people of the State voting, is not given for any {candidate for elector, the choice devolves on the Legislature; 8 majority of which, without much doubt, are for Taylor in Massachusetts, ®nd for Cass in New Hampshire. Tue Turrty-Finst Concress.—Fifteen members of the Thirty-first Congress are already elected, viz. ; one in arkansas, five in Missouri, two in lowa, and seven in Illinois. E. D. Baker, of Illinois, is the only whig of the fifteen. In New York are also to be filled, in November, two vacancies in the present Congress, viz.: ‘one in the 6th district, comprising six upper wards of this city, contested by Monroe and Jackson, and the other in the 27th district, composed of the counties of Seneeaand Wayne, lately represented by Mr. Holley, ‘whig, deceased. Both are close districts. ‘With regard te the comparative prospects of parties in the Congressional elections to be held this fall, the ‘only States where material changes may be expected, are New York and Pennsylvania—as we suppose the ‘Ohio delegation will be composed of eight Taylor whigs, three anti-Taylor whigs, and ten democrats, professing free soll doctrines, but supporting Cass and Butler. In Pennsylvania, our impressions ate that the demo- erate will gain some members, as thirteen of the twen- ty-four districts gave majorities for Polk over Clay in eas, and the members of the present Congress, (8 ral whigs having been chosen from democratic dis- tricts) were elected in the heat of the tariff excite- ment in 1846, caused by the repeal of the tariff of 1812. On the other hand, we think the whigs will gain in the State of New York as many members as they may Jose in Pennsylvania, in consequence of the division of the democratic party. Not more than five or six dis- tricts are safe for the democrats, and of these, proba- Dly, all but one will be Van Buren, free soil men, or barnburners. ... KENTUCKY. According to the Louisville Journal, Mr. Crittenden says thatgwherever he went, during his late canvass in Kentucky, he saw or heard of numbers of democrats who avowed their determination to vote for General Taylor. He adds, that, if any one of these democrats voted for himself be is not aware of it. He confi- dently believes that Kentucky will go for General ‘Taylor by a majority of 20,000. MASSACHUSETTS. ‘The following indications are certainly favorable to Taylor, in the New England States. The following is the result of a vote taken in the train from Lawrence, which brought up the passengers who had attended the opening of the Essex railroad, on Monday :—Taylor, 402; Van Buren, 62; Cass, 41; Gerrit Smith, 1; on the fence, 31.—Boston Journal. ‘A vote for President was taken last evening, United States Hotel, d_the following Te- sult:—Taylor, 180; Cass, 21; Van Buren, 6; Webster, a Theo. The tna Insurance Company of Hartford clared a dividend of five dollars per share. Since the arrival of the last steamer from have de Europe there has been considerable activity in agricultural produce of all kinds; and movements in produce gen- erally, and breadstuffs particularly, are of much im- portance to those engaged in trade. A few weeks since, the shipments of flour and grain were to such a limited extent that very little interest was attached to them in any way, and the prospect was that the bulk of our surplus would remain in first hands fot another season, at least, Since that vast revolution has taken place—arevolution nearly as great as that realized in the political world, within the past year. Instead of the inactivity and apathy which prevailed’ allis now bustle and activity. Theannexed table ex- hibits the quantity of certain articles exported from this port, distinguishing the destination and extent of shipments to each place, for the week ending the 4th inst. The shipments of flour to Great Britain and Ireland, for the week, amounted to 5,329 barrels, and corn 201,601 bushels—the aggregate shipment of flour to all parts, 16,350 bbls. This week, we have no doubt the exportation will be at least double that of last, and as the season progresses, rapidly increase. T! ments of corn for the same week last yeat, only edto 4,064 bushels. ‘he ship- amount- Last year, at this time, the ex- ports of breadstuffe were limited—the speculation in breadstuffa had ceased, and the rapid depreciation in priees, had suddenly suspended shipments. Move- ments in broadstuffs, therefore, for the remainder of this season, compared with those for the same period last, will show a largoincrease. It is probable that the shipments of Indian corn will be particularly large, as that grain is peculiarly calculated to supply the deficiency in the crop of potatoes; and then as an ar- ticle of food among the lower classes, it will at al’ times, and in any state of the harvests, be tant item of importation to Great Britain land. This grain has already beceme one of impor. and Ire- our sta- ple articles of export; and as the production in this country is immense, and can, ins year or two, be dou- bled, if necessary, any demand from abtoad can be easily supplied. It will be perceived by the above table, that our ex- ports to France and other countries on the Continent, are slowly increasing. It is encouraging that there is even the slightest improvement visible, as it shows a return ef confidence indicative of better times.
