‘The Malis for Europe—Passengers by the Acadia—Wreck of the brigs Bellic Isic and Huron-—Free Soll Meeting. Boston, August 23, 1848. The steamer Connecticut, on her passage from New York to Stonington, with the mails for the Acadia, broke #valvein her air pump, by which accident her engine was rendered useless. The steamer Empire State, Capt. Comstock, soon came alongside, and in reply to an en- quiry from Capt. Gomstock, was told that the Connec- theut would be able to proceed without assistance.— Dut after passing her about « mile, Capt. C. observed signals of distrese hoisted, and immediately put back and took the Connecticut in tow, reaching Stoning- ton at 6 o'clock this morning, thus enabling her pas- sengere and mails to arrive in this city at about 10 @clock. The i-mpire State, after leaving the Connec- ticut safe at her wharf, proceeded with her passengers te Fall River. The mails were all sent per Acadia. ‘The Acadia sailed with [nine passengers for Liver, pool, and eleven for Halifax, and $1,998 in specie. The British brig Belle Isle, Capt. Frazer, from An- napolis, for Boston, was capsized off Mount Desert. on Saturday night last, in a gale fromN.N.W. The masta were cut away, when she righted—but full of water, The crew were on the wreck 48 hours, during which time five sail passed, and two fore-and-aft schooners were almost near enough to hail, but they took no notice of their distressing situation. They bad nothing to cat but some rye flour, wet with salt water. ‘The crew were all lashed to the stump of the main- wast to prevent being washed overboard, when they were fallen in with by the British schooners Shannon, Capt. Bowdrot, and Eliza, Capt. Bowdrot, from Pictou, N.8., who took them off. The sea was so heavy that it was impossible to lower a boat. A line with a noose wae thrown on board the wreck as the schooners passed, which was caught by one of the crew of the brig, who jumped overboard, and was hauled on board the schooner, This was repeated until all the crew ten in number, were saved. Both the schooners split their sails, and, being deeply loaded, were in danger 0 foundering, in their efforts to save the crew. The brig Huron, of Belfast, bound for a Southern port, was capsized off Chatham, on the 19th instant, and abandoned, when she went ashore. The crew arrived at Nantucket yesterday, ina boat with only ‘one oar. : ‘The tree soil ratification meeting, at Faneuil Hall last night, was very large. The meeting was adc by D.D. There has been @ heavy storm of rain, accompanied by @ severe gale, at Norfolk, Virginia. Several vessels have been damaged, and it is feared that wrecks may have occurred on the coast. Police Intelligences 9 Arrest of Three Pickpockets.—Three expert pick- kets were arrested yesterday morning by officers Reed and Cole, of the 10th ward, who call themselves Edward Curtis, alias English “Ned,” or the Philadel- phia “Kid;” Robert Johnston, alias the “Long Doc- tor,” and James Williams. ' This interesting trio were seen by the officers to be lurking around the 7th ‘arg Bank, corner of Burling slip, watching an opportuni- ty to rob some unsuspecting merchant or a green countryman, who should chance to pass out of the bank with money. They had not waited long, before Mr. Nathaniel Eaton, drugeict, No, 2 Fletcher street, came from the bank ‘7icn his bank book in his hand, in which be bad just placed a $50 bill and two $20’s, the ends of which extended from the end of the book. ‘This book Mr. Eaton placed in the inside pocket of his dress coat while onthe steps of the bank, This operation was witnessed by English “Ned,” who, with tis two accomplices, followed after Mr. Eaton along Pearl street to Fletcher, and while passing along the narrow pavement in that street, the three accused parties crowded upon him from behind, touching his pecket and other parts of his body. Mr. Eston thought they were very rude, and not liking their ge- neral appearance, thought they might possibly be pick- poekete, and under this impressiou he placed his hand on the outside of his pocket, and finding his book still inside, passed on to his store, where, on examin- ing his book, he discovered that the $50 bill was gone, the two $20's being left behind. Thus the light-fingered ntry very ingeniously extracted the moncy from the ik. The fofficers followed after and saw the trio crowdon Mr. Eaton, and feeling aware that ajob had been done, followed up Mr. Eaton and asked him if he had lost anything, when Geld were informed that the $50 bill was gone. On getting this information the officers pursued the pickpockets and took them into @mstody, and searched {them, but no money was found on their persons. The supposition is that the money was thrown away upon their arrest, Take it altogether, it was a very expert job. and done remarkably clean. ‘he accused were all taken before Justice Timpson, who committed them to the Tombs for a further hearing. English Ned”? is but two weeks from the Connecticut State Prison, having served a term of two years for picking a pocket in Hartford. Williams came out of the Sing Sing Pri- son, in this State, in May last, he having just served out a term of two years for picking a gentleman’s pocket in the Butchers] and Drovers’ Bank. The “ Long Doc- tor? is an old band, although we believe never yet convicted. How this case may turn out towards their conviction, remains yet to be seen. Rebbing a Friend—Officers Goulding and Mincho. of the 6th ward, arrested yesterday a German by the name of Henry Grim, on harge of robbing a woman b; ho) bag = ey . ! nf some gold wate! old chain and seal, Sony’ other arvlolas, valued in all at $138 60 The young woman, it seems, was a boarder of the accused, and while absent from her room, Grim broke open her trunk and stole the property. MONEY MARKET. Wednesday, August 23.6 P. M. There was no change in quotations for stocks, to- day, worth reporting. The sales were limited. The activity moticed yesterday has entirely ‘disappeared. The season for some movement in the fancies is close at hand, and it is full time some indications made their appearance of what may be expected within the next three or four weeks, It is some satisfaction to specu- lator for a rise, that money is getting more abundant as it will give those returning from the country more confidence, and open the season with better hopes. It is stated that the old Albany Insurance Company will have $150,000 of sound capital remaining, after paying its losses by the late conflagration, and con- tinue its business as usual. The Firemen’s Insurance Company, of Albany, has resolved to continue business. All its losses will be promptly paid, and it will doubtless command its full share of risks. The imports of specie at Boston, during the past week, were $3,200, all from Halifax; of which $2,200 was in gold coin, and $1,090 in silver. There were no exports. The amount of tolls received on all the New York State canals, during the second week in August, in each of the past two years, was as annexed :— New Yorx State Canars—Amount or Torts. Received second week in August, 1847... $91,081 65 do do do 1848 ... 70,805 00 Decrease in 1848..,..... $20,276 65 Aggregate amount received for tolls, from the com- mencement of navigation to the lith of August, in- clusive, in 1848 seeeee + $1,462,013 72 During same period, in 1847... « $1,978,886 35 Decrease to Aug. 14,1848 .., $520,872 There appears, at present, no prospect of arresting this decrease in revenue from tolls on our public works, and it will probably reach, before the close of the sea- son, at least seven hundred thousand dollars. Thus far, the decrease has been more than twenty-five per cent., andifit continues at that rate for the remain" der of the season, the deficiency will exceed our esti- mate. If there is no improvement in prices for bread- stuffs in the seaboard markets, there will be no increase, of conseyaence, in the receipts of produce, as there appears to be a determination on the part of producer to hold on, at all hazards, foranadvance. The coun" try is full of breadstuffs and provisions—the granarie of our farmers must be literally groaning under the weight of their stocks; but there are no indications of its reaching the hands of consumers this seagon, at al events. Upon the resumption of navigation in the spring, when all hopes ofan improvement in prices have been abandoned, a large portion of the surplus of the past two crops may come out, particularly if the crops then on the ground look very promising. Recent events from the other side do not give us much hope as to a foreign demand of consequence, for anything but In- dian corn. ‘The quantity of certain articles exported from this port for the week ending the 2ist inst., inclusive, dis- tinguishing the destination and the extent of ship. ments to each country, was as annexed :— Port or New Yorx—Werxty Exports. The items included in the above statement com- | prise all cur staple exports except cotton, a distinct report of which we give below. It will be perceived that the shipments of breadstuffs have been limited, with the exception of Indian corn, and that they have been confined almost entirely to the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Our export trade with the Conti- nent has dwindled down to the smallest amount ; the aggregate weekly shipments hardly reach a full freight of @ respectable sized ship, In the face of this, our imports from that section of the world are compara- tively large. keeping up that demand for specie from this side which is creating such an unfavorable in- fluence upon our meney markets. Consumption of our products on the Continent must soon clear supplies from their markets, and leave a large vacuum for us to fill when confidence has again been restored, as the exports are so small that they must be far below the demand. This is a state of things, which cannot last long ; our import trade with the Continent cannot 80 much exceed our export trade, without deranging the intercourse of the countries concerned, and work- ing out its own remedy. If a direct trade cannot be Profitably conducted, it will be carried om through ComMERCE OF THE epper- | firm at $: Great Britain, amé exchange on Londom supply the place of specie. We fietter ourselves with the belief that the erisis has past; that the worst hae been real- ized; and that the imprevement, although gradual, will be permanent This, however, depends upon the pre- servation of peace between the different nations, and we caleulate upom that im eur anticipations. We | have one consolation, at al) events, in the present po- sition of our commercial) relations with the continent of Burope, which is the fact, that whatever change takes place, must be for the better. Im the event of a genera) war, eur imports from that partjof Europe en- gaged, would be materially reduced, while our exports would very likely increase, so that the balance of trade would probably be in our favor. The stock on hand at the latest dates, 1847, was 220,011 bales, and at the latest dates, 1848, 149,894 bales; de- crease this year, 70,117 bal The total crep of the year ending September lst, 1848, will be about two millions three hundred thou- sand bales, or more than five hundred thousand bales more than that of the previous year. The total ship- ments to foreign ports have thus far been fifty per cent greater than those of 1847; and we have no doubt this will be continued throughout the season; but this in- crease in receipts has added nothing to the aggregate value of the crop, and the increase in shipments no thing to the aggregate value of our exports. The enormous depreciation in prices for the raw material has prevented that increase in value which the addi- tional quantity produced would, under other circum- stances, have given. The large shipments to Great Britain, during the season about closing, have filled up the stooks in that country, at reduced prices, and de- prived us of the benefits anticipated from the reduc- tion of their supplies, to an amount never before real- ized, im the face of a large weekly consumption.
