View of the Village—Railroad to Fitchburg—lis Ad- vantages—Price of Peas—Capital City of New | England. OF all the villages in New England, this is cer- tainly the most distinguished. In literature, steam, floods, bank trials, monuments, sand-eoil, churches, | military, school houses, damp night air, and coughs, it is unrivalled, unequalled, unparalleled. It has | held an important position in history since the first | April shower in 1775 setin; and, if nothing eccurs, | ‘ more serious than the performance of a financial | farce, like that called the Phemx Bank Trial, the place must continue to Lucrease in wealih, intellect and green peas. There is one thing, however, that may affect its prosperity. That is, the railroad now building, | which isto conaect Boston and Concord with Fitch- | burg, and perchance Montreal. This new inter- communication will be opened in the course of a por or two, to the distance of forty miles into the heart of New England, and then, of course, all the farms between this place and Vermont, on the line of the road, will be brought into direct. competition with those situated ia this immediate vicinity and between here and Boston ‘This isa local view, it is true, of the advantages of the road, and is per- haps too conservative ia this age of farces; yet liv- ing in a village like Concord, one cannot entertain any other fora moment or two, Butto take acom- prehensive, a cosmopolite’s view of the impreve- ment—for in this view the coad actually becomes an Improvement—and we cannot rejoice too much over the enterprize. {t_ is not only to unite a hu dred villages in one family circle, but it is—provid- ed the road is continued to Montreal—to unite one nation with another, It is not only toaid in the progress of civi'ization, but itis to benefit the poor t! t cl wealth into the Japs of the agricultural classes. Wheu this thorough ire 1s opened— provided again, we negotiate reciprocity treaties with England and France—every farmer on the line will be kept ac- tively employed; he will turn his capital oltener; and every farm house will exhibit signs of increas. | ¢ ing prosperity. More spades, more ploughs, more huge paws, mere hoes, more cotton and woollen cloth, more shoes, more people, indeed, more every thing, will be needed to carry on the great business of lite. Ail trades will thenceforward improve. Farmers, who previously raised only sufficient for their own waats, will then have it in their power to bring every acre of land under cultivation, by hav. inga ready and speedy means of conveyance for their produce to the seacoast. Such, in short, wilt be the results of this railroad. But to go back to the loreal view. It is expected, when the road is completed, and the well known | 0 * Concord Engineer” throws away his pipe and runs the first locomotive trom Boston to this village, that many families now living in Boston will take up their residence here. It is our opinion, however, that very few persons will make this change, as there.are a dozen villages or more nearer the city, which will offer too strong inducements—stronger than we can offer. Several families, who have connexions bere, will undoubtedly make the change, but their number is almost too small to count in making an estimate upon the increas: of a 9 n t nr & amount to but little in the great movement of the age, itappears clear to us, that this Fitchburg Rail- road, in connexion with the Providence, Worces- ter, Norwich, Salem, Lowell, Nashua, Concord, Western and Eastern roads, and all their branches and turn-outs, will make Massachusetis one stupen- dous city—one immense depot. It willsoon be- come to New England what Boston now is to Mass. sachuset's—the chief city, with railroads for streets. Yours, H. o Avo {Correspondence of the Herald.) Avon, August 17, 1843, The Visitors—Avon Unsurpassed—The Crops—The Qualitivs of the Water—Poetics and Love Making. Dear Geanetr :— Again I seize my grey goose quill to write of Avon and its waters. Late rains, succeeded by genia! sun- shine, have given the “murphys” a vigorous start, rand they may be heard culling inthe hill for more om. f rote New Bath Spring, that referred to in my last, is becoming a point of great attraction; the water, in my opinion, is more palatable ‘han that of Saratoga, and the most obstinate cases of disor dered liver, diabetes, chronic affections of the spine and asthma, have yielded to its remedial power The worthy, well-bred, and complaisant discoverer and proprietor, Captain R. K. Hickox, intorms me that his spring is unquestionably the fountain head of the other springs; in digging, he penetrated to the hardpan and struck the precious vein, that is destined to water on Life’s tree many a fading blossom.
