BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. Sales of Stocks at Philadel; yest 2 Se Cee Lehigh Me Neha ces 8, _ Great Britain to the British possessions for their supplie, protect” the planters. The effect of this in England was, that in 1824 the consumption of coffee was 8,000,000 lbs. ; in the United States 19,700,000 Ibs! It rose in England to 22,000,000 Ibs. in consequence of the duties having been reduced one half and the price of Jamaica coffee rose from 99s. to 126s. per cwt, without During all this time the United States had the supplies of all the world at their command, and their trade grew accordingly. Thus the restrictive policy of other nations by keeping out the produce of supply which seeks the Ame- rican markets, and consequently reduces the price to the citizens of the United States, some of whom attempt to complain of that as an evil. Hence it is that the imposi- tion of a duty upon these articles by the United Btates, is astep towards driving them back to the markets of other nations, and in a manner neutralising their high duties.— In fact every duty imposed in the United States is legisla- ting for the {support of the English debt, atthe expense ef our owncitizens. The tax upon tea, for reasons here enumerated, will be a very apparent, direct, and heavy burden upon the consumers, because the supply is not ca- pable ofany material increase. ‘The coffee tax is equally paid by theoonsumers, but not so apparently, becaus the increasing supply will decrease the average price, nnless England were to remeve altogether her reatric- tions upon coffee, in which case the rapid increase of censumption there would rai world. Thesetaxes in the United States are only render- ed necessary by the unconstitutional sacrifice of revenue for the “« protection” of small individual i@terests.
